GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 78, No. 6 GEcwt Jofemmt. Ga. Seafood Focus OfNew Trade Group Seafood is a vital source of food for Georgia consumers, and the seafood industry has a sig nificant economic impact on our state's economy. For these reasons, the Georgia Sea food Council, a newly formed trade association, is dedi cated to promoting and improving our state's seafood industry. The idea for the organization grew out of the industry's need.for a unified voice to represent the seafood industry in Georgia. Our guest columnist this week is Glenn Johnson, President, Georgia Seafood Council, P.O. Box 10111, Savannah, GA 31412, (912) 232-5020. Our mission is as follows: * To assess the needs of Georgia fish and seafood businesses and their cus tomers for continuing education and train ing and to address those needs through general membership meetings and/or spe cial seminars and workshops. - * To monitor local, state and national governmental activities affecting Georgia's seafood industry and to inform members of these issues and encourage political action among the membership. * To establish a credible and unified source of seafood information for Georgia media. * To educate Georgia consumers about fish and seafood, promoting the benefits in order to increase consumption, and to inform them about the Georgia seafood industry. * To provide a means for Council members to leam of and cultivate benefi cial relationships with other Georgia seafood businesses in order to help them survive and grow. Membership in the council is open to all seafood harvesters, processors, whole salers, retailers, and any others who have an interest in seafood. Charter member ships for the first year are only $20 per person. Membership includes receiving quarterly council newsletters and notifica tion of biannual meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled in Atlanta, February 21,9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Georgia Power Company Energy Planning Center in Norcross. This will be an important meeting because we will provide seafood training for the retail sec tor. The seminar is free to council mem bers and their retail customers.
