Williams 1103 Grove Avenue Waycross, GA 31501 As an American, I Would like to tell you about a man, Roman Plaskota, a resident of Poland, who is a breeder, a healer, a collector and cultivator of rare and vanishing species of plants, herbs and spices. His one wish is to share his seeds of wild herbs, flowers and creepers with lovers of this art in the U.S., and he wants to do this for free, no charge. He would be interested in a seed swap with your readers, as he is desperately trying to get a start of American ginseng, among other plants, to grow in Poland. It is his hope that offering one-of-a-kind seeds from Poland to your large readership will stimulate and contribute to good fellowship between our nations as well as help to give a piece of the old country back to some of the Polish-Americans who may be a part of your readership. Tree Planting Program to Begin in Georgia A new tree planting cost share incen tives program is currently underway for Georgia landowners. Georgia Power Company, in coopera tion with the Georgia Forestry Commission, is providing funding for the tree planting on eligible private open lands in the state. "The program, Georgia Reforestation to Enhance Environmental Needs (GREEN), will enable landowners to' enjoy the benefits of forest ownership," said Larry Thompson, associate chief of the Commission's Forest Management Department, "and Georgia Power will be making a voluntary contribution to a cleaner and healthier environment through long-term carbon storage in trees and solid wood products." Any private landowner with a least 10 acres of productive open land in Georgia that was not otherwise being considered for planting trees is eligible. Open land is defined as any row crop, pasture, or oth erwise open land which (1) can be farmed with conventional equipment normally used in local farming practices, (2) does not contain more than 10 percent of requested acreage in any trees and (3) does not contain more than 10 percent of either two-inch diameter trees or trees eight feet or taller. Established forest land or cutover forest land do not quality as open land and to ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate, requests for larger acreages may not be approved in their entirety. Georgia Power is partnering with the Georgia Forestry Commission in response to concerns about rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Trees have the ability to cleanse the air by converting car bon dioxide into oxygen and carbon which becomes part of the wood. Participants in the GREEN program will be required to sign an application/contract which identifies the covenants required of the landowner. Some of the covenants include: * Protect the forested land from wild fire and grazing. * Maintain a properly stocked forested stand for a mimimum of 10 years. A properly stocked stand will involve a mimimum basal area of 50 square feet per acre. * Convey carbon storage rights to Georgia Power. * Advise the Georgia Forestry Commission 30 days prior to any timber harvest or immediately if any timber is damaged or destroyed on those acres involved in the program. After an application/contract is received, the Georgia Forestry Commission will conduct an inspection of the site to determine eligibility and forestry components needed (burning or mowing; subsoiling, chemical spray, etc.) to install the tree planting practice. A tree planting plan will be written by the Commission and provided to the landowner explaining what work will need to be done. All work to install the practice will be the responsibility of the landowner and should follow the guid ance of the tree planting plan. No work should begin until the landowner receives written notification from the Georgia Forestry Commission representative. After practice installation, Thompson said, the landowner will have until June 1 to submit invoices, bills or other cost doc umentation to the appropriate GFC repre sentative. The GFC representative will verify these costs, field inspect the prac tice to determine successful establish ment, and process payments through Georgia Power officials. If the practice meets GFC approval, landowners should receive their cost share payments within 30 to 45 days from final field inspection. As with all cost share programs, landowners should evaluate the advan tages or disadvantages of participating to ensure their interests are considered. Applications/contracts for the GREEN progam are available at your local Georgia Forestry Commission offices. I know that mistletoe is a parasitic plant that grows on the branches of trees. How did the custom of hanging it up at Christmas and kissing under it come about? Mistletoe was honored in Norse leg end and worshiped by the Druids, who were ancient Celtic priests of the woods. The Druids believed *bak trees were sacred and anything that grew on them was sent from the gods. When they found mistletoe growing on an oak, a priest in a white robe would climb the tree and cut it off. It was caught in a white cloth and a potion was made from it, which was believed to make barren animals and people fertOe and was thought to be a remedy for all poison. These priests put branches from evergreens over their doors to keep away evil spirits. The Scandinavian people regarded mistletoe as a plant of peace. If enemies happened to meet under a tree with mistletoe, they would cease fighting for the rest of the day. Their custom of hanging the plant over a doorway apparently grew from the belief that this plant brought peace to the house. If a woman stood under the mistletoe, a man could take the liberty of kissing her. He would remove a berry for each woman he kissed. The green plants with their light-colored berries are still used for decoration around the Christmas holiday. Evergreens have been used by many cultures to symbol ize life.
