UGA LIBRARIES UGA LIBRARIES ATHENS GA 30602-1645 GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONE Vol. J(, No. 43 Elwt# Vemm Consumers Should Be Well-Informed, Fair It is important for all of us, as con sumers, to know our rights. There are specific laws on the books that protect us. There are also many warranties and guar antees that come with products and services that we should understand and utilize when needed. Part of our reponsibility is to also be fair and rea sonable when work ing with a company which has provided a product or service for us. Our guest columnist this week is Elaine Denver, President, Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals (SOCAP), Simmons Company, One Concourse Parkway, Suite 600, Atlanta, GA 30328. For example, if a product comes with a five-year limited warranty, and we experience a problem after seven years, we need to be realistic. Yes, call the com pany and explain the situation. There may be a way that they can assist you. However, also keep in mind that there may not be a way that they can replace or repair a product after that much time has elapsed. There are times when maybe our expectations are unrealistic because of a bad experience we once had or maybe we just do not understand what is covered or . provided. But it never hurts to ask. Be assured, over the past couple of decades, more and more companies have become sensitive to their consumers' needs. Consumer Affairs Departments have grown by leaps and bounds! Some companies have gone from one person answering consumer calls (while they do their "real job") to a large staff of people specifically designated to help the con sumer. One major corporation, headquar tered in Atlanta, went from 14 people in Consumer Affairs about 15 years ago to over 150 people today. These dedicated people are there to assist with questions and solve problems for us, the con sumers. Yes, they work for the company but they are also there for us. One of the best things that we can do is to be informed. Some ways that we can be better informed consumers are the fol lowing: ask lots of "what if' questions upfront before you purchase: Who do I contact if I have a problem? What would be the steps taken after my initial contact? (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday October 26,1994 TOTAL FARM CASH RECEIPTS - Georgia, 1993 Poultry 40% Gov't Payments 5% Livestock 16% Farm Forest 3% Cash Farm Income in Ga. Hits Record High Georgia's .cash farm income in 1993 hit a record high, increasing to $4.76 bil lion, four percent more than the previous year, according to the Georgia Agricu ltural Statistics Service. The increase was due mainly to higher returns on livestock and poultry commodi ties, along with government payments. Receipts from farm marketings went up $124 million or three percent from 1992, while government payments increased $43.2 million or 24 percent. Other farm income rose $29.2 million or 10 percent. Georgia farmers' gross farm income, which includes cash income, non-cash income and inventory adjustments, increased two percent in 1993 to $4.88 billion. Farm production expenses at $3.34 billion were $303.3 million or 10 percent above 1992 and the highest of record. Net farm income was $1.53 bil lion, down 11 percent from 1992. Farm products sold in Georgia during 1993, including government payments and farm forest products, generated cash receipts of $4.56 billion, four percent more than in 1992. Crops accounted for 36 percent of the total, while poultry accounted for 40 percent, and livestock and livestock products 16 percent. Crop cash receipts totaled $1.64 bil lion in 1993, down eight percent from the previous year. Peanuts accounted for nine percent of the total, cotton five percent, tobacco three percent, and soybeans two percent. The 1993 poultry cash receipts increased 15 percent from 1992 to $1.82 billion. Broiler receipts totaled $1.50 bil lion or 33 percent. Cash receipts from livestock and relat ed products were $756 million in 1993, up four percent. Cattle and calves receipts were up eight percent from the previous year. In 1993, farm forest products and gov ernment payments accounted for eight per cent of the total cash receipts. Irvin Declares Crisis Exemption for Fungicide Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has declared a crisis exemption for the use of the fungicide Ridomil Copper 70W for use on both fresh and processed turnips, collards and mustard greens state-wide. This action was taken after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) verbally notified the Department that an earlier request for cholorothalonil would be denied. "With so many companies failing to renew pesticides for minor uses, our veg etable producers are finding it more and more difficult to find products which are approved for controlling diseases, weeds and insects in their crops," said Irvin. "Without approved pesticides, Georgia's greens production could be economically devastated." Irvin initiated the crisis exemption since there are currently no fungicides labeled for use on leafy greens which control the whole complex of diseases. With recent Georgia weather conditions conducive for diseases like downy mildew, the entire fall crop of leafy greens is at risk. The crisis exemption for Ridomil Copper, now registered by Ciba-Geigy, was made under provisions of Section 18 of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. Inside... Georgia Cooking...............page 5 Bulletin Calender............ page 10 ___________________ Copyright 1994 ag consumer line... I have what some people refer to as wild violets in my yard. They have taken over the pine island and flower beds. I have tried several weed killers, including Roundup. This did not get rid of them. Neither did tilling the soil. How can I keep them from returning next year? The Roundup is killing the plants, but not the seeds. Each flower pro duces about 50 seeds. You can use Balan to prevent the seeds from com ing up. Apply it in the fall and spring and be sure to follow all label direc tions and precautions when using this product. Our horticulturist does not know of any product that is 100 per cent effective against violets, however. % Can you tell me how to remove red clay stains from some athletic uniforms? I am having a hard time getting them out. According to home economists with the Georgia Extension Service, you should let any mud dry thoroughly before treating. Brush it well to loosen and remove the soil. Then work a heavy-duty liquid deter gent or a heavy concentration of any detergent into the stain and brush it in. Let it stand for 15-30 minutes, then launder, using the same detergent. Repeat this process if necessary. Liquid rust removers, which are available at grocery stores, may be effective on some difficult stains. They should be used on white or colorfast fabrics only. Test the product on an inside seam or hem before using. Be sure to read and follow label directions when using this product.
