Archer 1956Hwy. 211.N.E. Statham, GA 30666 706-725-5177 Christmas The Christmas season is approaching, We wait in eager anticipation As the glorious day of our Saviour's birth Is observed in a worldwide celebration. It is said that on the battlefield That with the dawn of Christmas morn, For a few short hours, a truce is held As both sides celebrate the Christ Child born. And through the miracle of His birth, Other miracles take place, As the joy of love and sharing Radiates from each smiling face. All the folks that we neglect Suddenly seem to come to mind, And cards are sent and gifts are wrapped For these special ones at Christmas time. The sick, the aged, the poor, the needy, These we suddenly remember, As peace on earth, good will toward men Reigns in each heart the month December. What a miracle it would be, If only we could find a way, To celebrate the Saviour's birth, Each and every single day. @JoAnne Price Monroe Used with permission Page 12 Grandpa's Garden Save the wood ashes from your fireplace this winter and add them to your compost pile. Wood ashes contain potassium and other miner als that will nourish your plants. Note: Do not use coal ashes. Hardy vegetables, such as beets, turnips, radishes and parsnips, can overwinter in the soil if mulch is added. A six- to eight-inch mulch of leaves, hay or pine needles will insulate the soil from freezing tem peratures and allow you to harvest the vegetables as needed. The Georgia winners are: -Autumn Stevenson, Whitfield County, conservation, $1,500. -Heidi Kinser, Pickens County, forestry, $1,500. -Corey Watson, Pickens County, wood science, $1,000. -Jason Parris, Polk County, lead ership, $1,500. -Kate Stewart, Tift County, sheep, $1,000. -Matthew Randolph, Pulaski County, veterinary science, $1,500. The Georgia delegation of around 50 state project winners joined 1,600 4-H'ers with expense-paid trips to the National Congress. They earned the right to take the trip by becoming state winners at the State 4-H Congress August 10-13 in At lanta. The 4-H'ers compete at county, district, state and national levels, studying and working in their project areas, teaching others what they've learned in demonstrations, talks and media features, and com piling exhaustive record books of their 4-H projects. National 4-H Congress will con tinue in a new format but will no longer include national competition or scholarships for top project win ners. This change marked the end of a 72-year tradition. Georgia 4-H will continue to select state project winners in future years. RECIPE REQUEST Recipe for Rainbow Salad (congealed & colorful). Nell Maxwell 1791 Haygood Dr. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30307
