MARKET BTJLLETIIM GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 76, No. 27 Wednesday, July 7,1993 Group Dedicated To Humane Care In April 1992, a planning committee met to begin a Georgia chapter of the National Hooved Animal Society, which was founded in 1971. By July 1, 1992, the Georgia Hooved Animal Humane Society had been established, and now the organization is celebrating its first anniversary this month. Our guest columnist this week is Susan Robinson, president, Georgia Hooved Animal Humane Society, P.O. Box 586, Woodstock, GA 30188-0586.______ GHAHS was formed by hooved animal lovers to provide a way to improve the quality of life of hooved animals. The majority of cases the GHAHS has been actively involved in were predominately horse and cattle abuse cases, but other hooved animals such as pigs, goats and sheep may require a helping hand in the future -- yours and ours. The goals of GHAHS are to provide anonymous reports of abuse or starvation to the Georgia Department of Agriculture or other law enforcement officials, to provide donations to the Equine Impound Center operated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, and to provide educational materials and programs for horse owners, saddle clubs, 4-H clubs and other interested groups. During its first year, GHAHS has made donations of monies and supplies, such as feed and hay, to the Georgia Department of Agriculture for the Equine Impound Center. In addition, a video camera donated by one of our members to GHAHS was presented to the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Equine Division for use in investigating abuse and neglect reports. All donations made to the nonprofit Georgia Hooved Animal Humane Society are tax deductible. Hooved animal lovers interested in more information can contact the Georgia Hooved Animal Humane Society at (404) 590-8869. Special Summer Equine Edition See ads, events ...............Pages 6-9 Ga. All commercial scales must be certified for accuracy by the Agriculture Department's Weights and Measures inspectors. They are tested periodically and, when certified, bear our green and white decal. If you have a complaint or question about the accuracy of commercial scales, call our toll-free number listed below. Our number is also printed on the decal. I have had a problem with fleas inside my house and my friend suggested I put down some dust to control these pests. I have had a time getting rid of the stuff. Is there an easier way? Yes, easier and better. First of all, the product you mentioned is not recommended for use indoors. A spray would be better inside than a dust and you can use an aerosol bomb to kill fleas. Products that contain Precor will kill the larvas as well as the adults. Do not use insecticides indoors that are recommended for the outside. If your pet goes in and out of the house, you should treat him/her at the same time you treat the house. Of course, you should buy a product that is made to be used on animals and you should read and follow label directions when using all pesticides. If you have problems or questions concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department ofAgriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 MLK Jr. Dr., Atlanta, Georgia 303344201, or call toll-free 1-800-282-5852 or 656-3645 in metro Atlanta, Foundering Can Be Problem for Equine With the fall grazing season approaching, the Georgia Department of Agriculture would like to remind equine owners to be aware of founder (laminitis). This condition results from allow- ing equine to eat too much lush grass or grain. Founder begins as a short-term obstruction of the blood supply followed by excessive blood accumulation in the lamina of the hoof that eventually leads to the breakdown and degeneration of the union between the horny and sensi- tive lamina of the hoof wall. The congestion causes increased pressure in the hoof which results in pain as evident by the animal's reluctance to stand or exercise. The horse usually becomes depressed, appetite decreases and increased digital pulse can be felt in the digital vessels just above the hoof. Founder can affect all feet of the horse, but it is most commonly seen in the forefeet. Chronic changes can occur in the hoof wall and structures within the hoof if the horse is not treated shortly after clinical signs are noticed. A complete separation of the hoof from the underlying structure is possible if treatment is delayed or not given. Once this type of irreversible change occurs, the prognosis for recovery is very poor. Horses suspected of founder should be treated as an emergency. Simply speaking, the earlier the treatment, the better the prognosis. Due to the importance of having a sound horse and the need for accurate treatment, a veterinarian should be utilized. Equine that are high risk for founder are those that are overweight, aging or unfit. "Common sense can lower the risk of founder from lush grass or grain," according to Dr. James Quigley, state veterinarian for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. "Owners should keep excessive weight off of their horses and exercise them frequently. Preventing the ingestion of too much grain and limiting the grazing of lush pasture will certainly lower the risk." Your veterinarian will be glad to recommend feeding and grazing schedules to help you reduce the incidence of this debilitating condition. The Department recommends you contact your veterinarian for additional information. 'Copyright 1993 Deadline Approaches For Ag Export Seminars The deadline is approaching for the Georgia Department of Agriculture's second annual "Strictly Agriculture" export seminars scheduled during July in Albany and Atlanta. In Albany, the seminar is scheduled for July 14, 8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., in Room C-205 of the Darton College Student Center. The Atlanta seminar is planned July 16, 8:30 a.m. - 4:15 p.m., in Room 201 of the Agriculture Building in Atlanta. Speakers at the seminar include experts from the Foreign Agricultural Service and the Southern United States Trade Association as well as representatives of companies who have had experience in agricultural exports. "If you are a producer, processor or marketer of agricultural products and involved in the export of these commodities, you will not want to miss these informative seminars," said Tommy Irvin, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture. Due to space limitations, reservations are required and will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. For reservations or additional information, call the Department's International Trade Division at (404) 656-3740.
