MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 76, No. 23 Racking Horse Assn. Growing The U.S. Racking Horse Associa' tion (United) was established to give those people with racking horses a clean, fun and most of all fair place to show their horses. Our group was founded in Gumming, Ga., as a non-profit organization designed to promote the racking horse as a show horse. Although our organization has only been in existence since January, 1993, the association has grown rapidly. Our guest columnist this week is Cynthia Mann, president, U.S. Racking Horse Association (United), 1467 Cardinal Dr., Austell, GA 30001.___________________ We feel that there are a lot of people in and around Georgia who have racking horses and would like an opportunity to show them. We believe our association can be the answer. Our members have a lot of good clean fun, and everyone is judged the same. Points are accumulated not because of who the person is, but rather how his or her horse performs. We cater to Walkingbred (walking-type horse, exhibiting no hock action), Saddlebred (American Saddlebred horses, exhibiting the animation typical of the breed), and Non-Saddlebred (other racking horses, from part walking horse to part saddlebred). Each breed is shown in a class of its own. In addition, we have classes for tots, juvenile, amateur and championship. Points are earned with each win, and we have an awards banquet at the end of the season. (Continued on Page 11) Siddle-Bitd Noo Saddle-Bred Walking-Bred Wednesday, June 9,1993 ag consumer line . . . I have some potatoes in my pantry that have sprouted. Can I still use them or should I throw them away? Yes, you can use them, but some of the potato will be wasted. Just break or cut off the sprouts. It is recommended that you peel all of a sprouted potato before cooking. Potatoes should be stored in a cool, humid (but not wet), dark place that is well ventilated. The ideal storage temperatures are 45-50 degrees F. Under these conditions, they will keep well for several weeks. Warmer temperatures encourage sprouting arid shriveling. Avoid prolonged exposure to light, which causes the spuds to turn green and taste bitter. They should not be refrigerated, because temperatures below 40 degrees F. will cause an increase in sugars, which will change the taste and cause the potatoes to darken when cooked. **## If you have problems or questions concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 MLK Jr. Dr., Atlanta, Georgia 303344201, or call toll-free 1-800-282-5852 or 656-3645 in metro Atlanta. For the last three years, June was officially declared as Turkey Lovers' Month by the National Turkey Federation. This year is no exception, as the National Turkey Federation has again declared June is Turkey Lover's Month in 1993. Turkey has traditionally been popular for Thanksgiving, but, during recent years, consumers have created a demand for convenient turkey products all year long. During the summer, consumers are looking for food that is delicious, light, nutritious and, of course, convenient. As expected, Georgia prices moved into the upper $40/cwt. range at the end of May. Prices may slip into the $50's in June, but most of the summer rally probably has been seen. Prices are expected to hold in the upper $40 range through most of summer. In a normal year, Georgia hog prices are 13 percent above the yearly average price in June, 11 percent in July and eight steers. The reason for the continuation of relatively profitable prices for cow-calf producers is that the beef factor (the beef cow herd) has not increased much over the last few years. With beef exports expand- ing rapidly from just 1.5 percent of production in 1985 to over 6.5 percent, some expansion in beef production can be accommodated. Cowcalf producers are now increasing their herds, but the effects will not show up until Plants, calendula, mugwort, St. John's wort load & haul, $1.90/bale. Increases in beef production and a possible spurt in grain price makes holding feeder cattle during the summer quite risky. But the prices that cow-calf producers re- ceive for their calves at weaning this fall should not be significantly different than last year, barring a major summer drought that is. creased calves. The snowy winter and cool spring in many parts of cattle country may also reduce this year's calf crop. A modest increase in cow numbers, continued export growth, and stable grain prices could mean another couple of good pay days for Georgia's cow-calf folks. Most of the state's produce is supplied to the fresh market and is readily available throughout the summer months at grocery stores, state farmers' markets and pick-your-own produce farms. The following chart shows when some of Georgia's most popular fruit and vegetable crops are usually available. Weather conditions can affect the growing and harvest seasons, so be certain to call your local store, farmers' market or pickyour-own produce farm to check for availability of the crops in your area. THE MARKET BULLETIN Structural Pest Control Technicians Required to Pass Registration Exam by July 1 Commissioner of Agricul ture Tommy Irvin is re minding all Georgia pest control technicians that they must complete the technician registration process by the July 1, 1993, deadline or face penalties. Under the Georgia Struc tural Pest Control Act, technicians are required to pass a registration exam or encounter stiff fines of up to $1,000 and possible proba tion. The exam must be ei ther retaken at two-year in tervals or the technicians must acquire the necessary training hours for each cate gory over the designated two-year period. The new regulation was adopted by the Georgia Structural Pest Control Commission last year. "I believe this program will prove to be one of the most valuable changes, to both industry and the con suming public, adopted by the structural pest control field in quite some time," said Irvin. "We feel that not only do consumers benefit from having access to trained pesticide applica tors, structural pest control firms also profit from hav ing personnel who know the proper way to handle pesti cides." Technician registration tests will continue to be offered throughout the state until the July 1, 1993, dead line and beyond the regis tration cutoff. For further information on test loca tions and to obtain an appli cation form, structural pest technicians may call the De partment's toll-free number at 1-800-282-5852. We would like to thank Andy Hovey of Hamilton for this garden tip: Empty plastic flower, plant or tree pots can be reused year after year by cutting two or three sec tions out of the pot, and using them as cut worm barriers by placing them around new plants such as tomatoes or peppers. We would like to thank Mrs. Beverly Thrower of Hortense for this tip on giving curtains a "fresh" look: Put six tablespoons of epsom salts to a gallon of water in the washing machine, then hang the curtains out to dry. This will make them look like new curtains. We would like to thank E.F. Hamrick of Blakely for this tip on processing luffa gourds: Let the gourds dry on the vines before pull ing them, peeling the hull from the gourd. Mix one quart of Clorox with one gallon of warm water. Let the gourds soak in the mixture 30 to 40 minutes, keeping them moving around. Remove the gourds, then wash them out with cold water several times. They should clean up snow white, and then should be hung out to dry. We would like to thank one of our readers in Twin City for this tip on getting rid of flies: Take a spoon ful of black gunpowder & put it in an old plate. Mix in about two spoonsful of water. Put it out where the flies can get to it. The flies will be killed when they eat the mix ture.
