MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol.76, No. 17 Alumni Supports FFA Chapters Are you interested in supporting agricultural education and the work of the Future Farmers of America in your local school system? Do you know an FFA member who is in school now? Were you an FFA member when you were in high school? If you can answer yes to one or more of these questions, then you need to be involved in FFA Alumni. FFA Alumni is an organization of people who recognize the importance of agricultural education in public schools. They help support the activities of their local FFA Our guest columnist this week is Tim Savelle, State Coordinator, Georgia FFA Alumni Association, 603 Driftmier Engineering Center, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602, 706-542-3679. chapter, and they assist the local agriculture teacher in helping FFA members gain the most from all of the opportunities that FFA has to offer young people. The mission and purpose of FFA Alumni is simple: to support agricultural education and FFA. This can be done locally in Georgia through 47 alumni chapters around the state. The 47 chapters, called affiliates, belong to the state organization called the Georgia FFA Alumni Association. There are almost 1,000 FFA Alumni members in Georgia. Each of the 50 states has a state FFA alumni association, and there are over 35,000 members nationwide. The annual meeting of the national organization is conducted each November along with the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. The ways that FFA Alumni members assist FFA'ers in their counties are too numerous to count. Financial support is a primary means of help. Some alumni affiliates provide scholarships for higher education to deserving FFA members. Others sponsor local livestock shows. Still others help pay for FFA members' trips to attend the National FFA Convention. (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday, April 28,1993 Canadian Tour Highlights Vidalia Onions Canadian consumers will have an opportunity to learn more about Georgia's popular Vidalia onions during an eight-city media tour planned April 28 - May 7, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agri- culture Tommy Irvin. The tour, which will kickoff in London, Ontario, will include radio, television and print promotions by representatives from the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Vidalia Onion Committee who will focus on how to select, prepare and store the commodity. Demonstrations and tastings are also planned at the Ontario Produce Terminal. "Because of its proximity, Can- ada is a natural export market for Vidalia onions," said Irvin. "While our growers are already shipping product into Canada, we hope that by better acquainting consumers, demand for our Vidalias will increase." Last year, 17,000 fifty-pound bags of Vidalia onions were shipped to Canada valued at $238,000. As a result of the promotional tour, growers hope to significantly increase Canadian sales. The Canadian promotional tour is being funded by the Market Promotion Program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service. Applications Now Accepted For Ga. Agri-Leaders Forum Georgia Agri-Leaders Forum, an independent organization designed to heighten the preparedness of the state's agricultural community in terms of leadership, is now accepting applications for its 1994 class. The Forum involves farmers, owners and employees of agri-related institutions, and others committed to agriculture and rural Georgia. Generally, participants will be between the ages of 25 and 50 (exceptions to be made at discretion of the selections committee) and able to commit about 25 days to the program over a 12-month period. The second class of 30 partici- pants will begin in January, 1994. The program will consist of six study institutes over a one-year period. Each institute will expose participants to a wide range of issues and policy discussions, as well as liberal opportunities to broaden their leadership skills. Tuition for the program is $3,000 which may be paid by participants or sponsors. Applications must be returned and postmarked by June 15, 1993. To obtain an application, or to find out how your organization can serve as a sponsor for the Agri- Leaders Forum, contact Lynne Kernaghan, executive director, at 1800-473- 6786. Soil, Water Stewardship Week Observance Set Emphasizing that the greatest influence on the environment comes from individuals doing ordinary, thoughtful tasks in their neighbor- hoods, the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) is encouraging individuals and local school, camp, church and organiza- tion leaders to join the nationwide observance of Soil and Water Stewardship Week, April 25-May 2. This year's theme is "Hands of Healing," which suggests that all citizens have an opportunity and responsibility to lend support to our environment. "The most important thing for us to learn as individuals is that our actions do make a difference," said Gerald B. Digerness, NACD president. "The fact that you may now run less water to brush your teeth is just as important to our environment as a builder installing sediment control basins in a major urban development. Both require individual action...both make a difference." (Continued on Page 12) Copyright 1993 Ag Department Regulates Flea Markets, Fruit Stands Georgia consumers who attend flea markets or visit roadside fruit stands are urged by the Georgia Department of Agriculture to take note of food products which may not comply with Departmental guidelines. Canned goods which are extremely dented, rusted, swollen, mislabeled, or have been offered for sale past the "sell by" date, are subject to removal upon inspection by the Department's Consumer Protection Division. Departmental guidelines apply to flea markets and roadside stands as they do to grocery stores and supermarkets in Georgia. "Our inspection program for food products has been developed to protect the citizens of Georgia, but not be overly restrictive to food producers and small merchants," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "The increased popularity of flea markets and roadside fruit stands has created a situation of encouraging the sale of certain food items at these temporary locations." Following an in-depth review of flea market and roadside stands, the Department has established that all food products and places selling food products are subject to inspection for compliance with Consumer Protection Food Division Regulations. Consumers are asked by the Department to consider whether questionable food products purchased at cheaper prices than retail in order to save money are really worth the risk of illness. Flea market and fruit stand operators are reminded that the food regulations are in effect on Saturdays and Sundays, and that the Department is taking an active role in monitoring and inspecting these businesses on weekends. For more information or to register a complaint about a food product or food handling, call the Consumer Services Division toll-free, 1-800282-5852. FFA Alumni (Continued from Page 1) Alumni members also provide physical assistance and advice in conducting FFA activities. Some help students conduct the annual FFA banquet at their school. Others serve as judges for local FFA con tests such as public speak ing and livestock judging. Still others assist agricul ture teachers by serving as chaperones on trips to events such as FFA summer camp or the State FFA Con vention. Alumni members often help deliver FFA members' livestock to fairs and shows and then assist the students in fitting the animals for showing. You do not have to be a former FFA member to be a part of an FFA Alumni group. Anyone can be an FFA Alumni member. All you need is to have a desire to help young people get the most out of their experi ences in FFA. It is very likely that there is an FFA Alumni affiliate in your county. To find out, contact the agriculture teacher at your local high school. For information on starting an affiliate in your community, or to find out how to become an Alumni member, contact the Geor gia FFA Alumni Associa tion office at the address or telephone number listed in this column. Wednesday, April 28,1993 Bulletin Readers 'Turn up' Wonders Eugene L. Parton of Ringgold recently pulled this huge 15-pound turnip from his garden. It measured 28 and 1/4 inches in circumference, and five and 1/2 inches in diameter. Mr. Parton said he's grown a lot of vegetables in his time, but none this large. He and his wife, Esther, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Phil Guidry of Marietta certainly has a green thumb, as evidenced by this 11-pound turnip he grew.
