MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 78, No. 7 Agrirama Preserves Rich Rural Heritage Rural America is a wonderful place! Most of us already know just how much we appreciate the values which are instilled in us today because of our rural heritage. Every so often, however, I meet someone who has forgotten or even worse, never learned to appreciate just how important those roots are. On those days I am especially appreciative of Georgia Agrirama and the efforts of state government Our guest columnist this week is Judy Neal, executive director, Georgia Agrirama, P.O. Box Q, Tifton, Ga. 31793, (912) 3863344. and private citizens to develop a living history museum devoted to our rural heritage. Georgia Agrirama allows us to hold on to the years 1870-1910. Those were important years in the South, years with lessons about the value of hard work and family unity, with clear examples of the importance of neighbors and the value of friends, and years with the joy of music, storytelling and creative arts. We can draw lessons to apply to today's problems by understanding and appreciating our past. Because the museum is a "living history museum," all these lessons to be learned are fun. Everyone always has a good time at Georgia Agrirama. Sometimes those people having fun are children, seeing for the first time the reality of the tales Grandma and Grandpa have always told. Sometimes they are students, along with their classmates, dressing in the costumes of the period and studying history in an energetic, active way. Often they are senior citizens, swapping stories of their childhood with costumed personnel in the traditional farmhouse or the restored drugstore or by the steampowered sawmill. Always, they are members of families who find themselves drawing closer together with a new understanding of their heritage. The 1870s unfold with cooking over the open hearth in a tradi- (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, February 13, 1991 Georgia 1990 Crop Values As a Percentage of Total Crop Value Wheat Soybeans 4% Peanuts 36% Peaches yr, The preliminary value of production for 18 principal Georgia crops decreased 8 percent in 1990, to $1.28 billion, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. An extended summer drought, above normal temperatures and insect damage resulted in sharply reduced yields per acre for most crops. The most notable exception was tobacco, which set a record high yield. These value of production estimates do not reflect the amount sold, cost of production, profit or loss. Estimates of cash receipts from marketings, production costs and net income will be available at a later date. Ga. Congressmen Pursue Federal Drought Aid Continuing the fight for financial aid to drought-stricken Georgia farmers, Senator Wyche Fowler Jr. has joined forces with the Georgia House Delegation to request that emergency crop assistance, authorized under the 1990 Farm Bill, be included in a supplemental appropriations measure. In a joint letter sent Feb. 7 to Senator Quenton Burdick, chairman of the State Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture and Related Agencies, Sen. Fowler and his colleague, Sen. Dale Bumpers of Arkansas, said that the Bush Administration's supplemental appropriations package fails to address the devastation of the agricultural industry in Georgia and other farming states caused by the wide variety of severe weather conditions across the country last year. This effort was joined by the Georgia House Delegation's formal request for this funding to Representative Jamie L. Whitten, chair- (Continued on page 12) ag consumer line... Successful Garden Requires Thorough Planning Q: Can your tell me the easiest way to crack a coconut? I like to grate my own fresh coconut but the shell is hard to crack open. A: Our home economist recommended that you pierce one of the soft spots on top of the coconut with an ice pick and drain the milk before cracking the shell. Then you can either tap it all over with a hammer or heat it in the oven at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes to crack it. Q: Is it legal for stores to sell canned goods that are dented? I have seen them in special bins at some stores where they are usually sold at reduced prices. A: Canned goods cannot be sold to the public if they are dented along the side seams, or along the lips (seams where the top and bottom are joined to the body of the can); if cans are badly dented in other areas which could allow bacteria to enter and spoil the food; or if they are excessively rusty, (Continued on page 12) Before you rush out to plant your seed, take the time to do a little planning to help ensure you will reap the harvest you expect. Selecting a proper location is important. You may be able to improve the quality of poor soil, but it is almost impossible to improve a location once the garden is established. If possible, choose a site that has full sun exposure. The plot should be located away from trees that might block out light and compete for nutrients and moisture. Choose a well-drained spot and avoid locating the garden in low areas where water and cold air tend to collect. Ideally, the soil should be loamy and fertile with good moisture-holding capacity and it should be free of rocks and other debris. Since you cannot always depend on rain for sufficient moisture, make certain the garden is located near a water supply. Many folks like to have their garden near the house so that it is convenient to water and allows them easy access to inspect their crops daily for disease, insect and weed problems. In addition, crop development can be closely monitored to ensure the veg- etables are harvested at the proper stage of maturity. Once the site is selected, make a sketch of your garden plans, including the types and quantities of vegetables you plan to plant, the location of each crop, and the planting dates and approximate harvest dates of each vegetable. This diagram will enable you to make the best use of your time and space. It also will provide a record that you can refer to when planning your crop rotations from year to year. The size of your garden should be determined by the space available, the number of people in your family, the kinds of vegetables preferred, and the time you have to spend tending it. Remember that more can be produced from a small, well-tended plot than a large, poorly managed one. Before you begin planting, you need to get your soil in shape. Take a soil sample and have it tested to determine your fertilizer needs. Your local Extension office can provide instructions for collecting your sample. Once the results are re- (Continued on page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, February 13,1991 Farm employment If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Mia Haney 651-9082.
