MARKET BTJLLETIIM GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER ... Vol. 78, No. 5 Wednesday, January 30, 1991 Tobacco Assessment Offsets Gov't Cutbacks i The 1990 Georgia Tobacco marketing season was one of the most successful ever! In a year when extreme drought and intense heat took its toll on other crops, tobacco emerged as the one bright spot for those growers who continue to include it in their overall farming operation. Good export demand and high yields, along with a negligible "nonet-cost" assessment made the 1990 Our guest columnist this week is Lawton Mathews, Chairman, Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Tobacco, P.O. Box65,Tifton,GA31793 crop one of the most profitable ever. ^Tobacco should remain a profitable farming enterprise as long as we producers maintain excellent production, research and educational programs, and continue to improve our export markets. Tobacco continues to lose ground in public opinion. Government funding for tobacco related programs continues to be reduced. As this source of funding decreases, key research and extension programs will suffer until shortages can be made up elsewhere. In order to maintain these vital programs, we as producers must increase our funding commitment. The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Tobacco, has and will continue to supplement and provide "seed" monies for various research and extension programs, that are vital to the tobacco economy in Georgia. Georgia tobacco producers, through our Commission, contribute to the promotion of Georgia tobacco in the export market. Tobacco Associates, Inc., a grower group, supported by the producers of all five flue-cured producing states, has in recent years made great strides in expanding the sale and utilization of U.S. flue-cured tobacco in foreign markets. Our level of funding also influences the amount of Targeted Export Assistance (TEA) funds that Tobacco Associates may receive to assist in funding these programs. Without the continued growth of export markets, the future of tobacco looks less than bright. Our Commission has (Continued on page 12) Ag Exports Ga. Products Featured At Swedish Trade Show Farmland Edition Planned in March The next farm land edition of the Market Bulletin will be published March 20. Deadline for this issue is March 6. Please follow these guidelines when submitting an ad for publication in the farm land edition (see page 11 for farm land ad form): Only farm land may be advertised. Land tracts must be at least five acres in size and located in Georgia. Indicate acreage and county where your property is located. Ads must be submitted by the individual owner. No real estate brokers or agents are allowed to advertise. Descriptive terms should be limited to those characterizing the farm property or agricultural structures. Detailed descriptions of nonrelated farm structures will not be included. Only one ad per household per farm land section is permitted. For best results, include the price of the property in the notice. All notices must be received in writing by the March 6 deadline. Georgia agricultural exporters are invited to participate in GastroNord '91 to be held March 4-7 in Stockholm, Sweden. This is the largest trade show in Sweden and features products for hotels, restaurants and catering firms. The Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA), of which the Georgia Department of Agriculture is a founding member, has purchased a booth at this show and can accept three companies to participate. The space is available on a first-come, first-served basis for a fee of $1,000, which includes the booth space, furniture, decoration and the shipment of 130 pounds of product samples and promotional materials. Each firm is required to have a company representative at (Continued on page 12) ag consumer line... Beekeeping Enjoyable Activity Q. I bought a tub of margarine recently that also contains butter. Although butter was listed as the third ingredient, the front of the label stated that the product contains no cholesterol. I know that butter has cholesterol, so how can they say this? A: According to federal food labeling regulations, manufacturers may label a product as cholesterolfree if it contains less than 2 milligrams of cholesterol per serving. The product you purchased meets this criteria. *** Q: I know that chocolate comes from the cocoa bean, which grows on a tree. Can you tell me where this tree is found? A: The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) is a perennial evergreen that is native to the hot, humid forests of Central America and Mexico. It is also grown on the Gold Coast of Africa, where the climate is similar to that of its native habitat. It is cultivated for its fruit cocoa beans which grow inside pods that are about a foot long and red to brown in color. (Continued on page 12) To Begin During Winter Months Backyard beekeeping is a hobby that may be planned and started in the winter with an eye towards spring, when blooming flowers and fruit trees should supply the new colony with nectar and pollen. Backyard hives can be started successfully almost anywhere in Georgia; there are no known local ordinances prohibiting the practice, according to Georgia Department of Agriculture entomologist Jim Har- ron. The main benefits to the hobby apiarist include personal enjoyment and satisfaction, since the little creatures are fascinating to watch, and a ready supply of homemade honey, which is a wholesome and versatile food product. The yields of backyard gardens should also increase as a result of keeping bees, since the insects are famous for their role as pollenators. Squash, cucumbers, watermelon and canteloupe must be pollenated to set fruit, while beans, tomatoes, blueberries, apples and peaches all benefit from bees to some degree. Beekeeping start-up costs usually can he held below $200 for a pair of hives, and time commitments can be similarly controlled with proper planning. The basic skills required to keep bees are fairly easy to master, and there is plenty of written information available through local libraries, schools, the state Agriculture Department and county agents. Other precautions to consider include potential bee stings and neighbors. Domestic honeybees are manageable and their stings are only slightly irritating to most people, but the stings can be fatal if the victim is allergic to bee venom. Therefore, make certain you consult your doctor before you decide to obtain your bees. It is also a good idea to consult with your neighbors before you set up your hives. Place the hives away from high use areas, and locate the hive away from open areas to avoid summer heat. To capture winter warmth, the hives should face south or east so they will receive morning sunlight. Also be sure there is a constant supply of fresh, cool water nearby (not your neighbors' swimming pool).
