MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 78, No. 47 Hotoce HiufoeK Farm-City Week Set Nov. 22-28 Thirty-six years ago, a group of concerned citizens decided a program was needed to improve relationships. The problem was that city folks could not understand farmers, and the farmers did not understand urban dwellers. FarmCity Week was started to bring about a better understanding between the rural and urban segments of society. Everyone's best interest is to help our farms and cities remain strong Our guest columnist this week is Horace Hudson, Farm-City Week State Chairman, Hoke Smith Annex, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602. and healthy. We need to work together if we are to reach our full potential and find solutions to issues that concern us all: environmental matters, problems of increasing populations and dwindling land resources, international trade, hunger, questions of choosing or changing careers and finding work in a rapidly changing world. Neither farm nor city can exist in isolation. Today most Georgians work at non-farm jobs and purchase nearly all of the food they eat. Ironically, more than 92 percent of the population now lives in urban and suburban areas and an abundance of food remains available. Thanks to the farmers' ability to produce crops and livestock in abundance, agriculture supports an economy with less than three pecent of the total work force. About 75 cents of each dollar spent on food pays for jobs that inspect, grade, store, process, package, transport and sell the food you purchase. Almost one in five jobs today exist because of agriculture and forestry. Most Georgians, both farm and city, are blessed with an abundance of wholesome food and healthy living spaces. We all want that important commodity food at least three times a day. That fact makes food a popular item for the media, and front page news coverage and editorials often are used to play on the public's mind. Radical food quality groups exploit the practices of farm producers and food proces- (Continued on page 16) Wednesday, November 20,1991 As the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays approach, Georgia cooks turn their attention to baking pies, cakes and all kinds of holiday delicacies. At the top of the list are recipes involving fresh pecans, a commodity grown more in Georgia than any other state. At left, Hugh Thames, located on Shed 23 at the Atlanta State Farmers Market, is shown with a machine which cracks the pecans for his customers. fllona the &nlumei l/ine CPSC Recall Program Helps Prevent Injuries The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is the federal agency responsible for the safety of some 15,000 different types of consumer products which fall within its jurisdiction. An estimated 28.5 million injuries and 21,600 deaths occur each year because of faulty products and CPSC's mission is to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. In addition to informing and educating the public on the proper use and safety of various products, in some instances, products must be recalled that cause risks or danger to consumers. Below is a sample of recently recalled items. Evenflo pacifiers decorated with Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Mickey Mouse, or Minnie Mouse characters, sold between December 1990 and July 1991, retailing for $2 to $3. Consumers are urged to discontinue use and mail the pacifier to Evenflo Products Company, P.O. Box 1206, Ravenna, OH 44266-1206 and request replacement or refund. Customers may contact Evenflo at 1800-356-2229... Do-it Yourself Hobby & Craft Brushes, number 033572-10001-4 printed beneath the bar code symbol on the back of the package. Paint on wooden handle of brushes contains excess lead. Return brushes to retailer for a full refund of purchase price. Contact Marx Brush Mfg. Co. at 1-800-6546279 with questions. (Continued on page 16) Christmas Tree List Published There is nothing like choosing and cutting your own Christmas tree and many folks make this activity a family outing each year. Choose-and-Cut Christmas tree farms also have become a popular alternative enterprise for some Georgia farmers in recent years. More than 200 Christmas tree farms around the state are offering fresh, well-shaped trees of several popular species this year. Some of these farms also sell wreaths and other holiday items at their facilities. For a listing of Georgia chooseand-cut Christmas tree farms see pages 8-10. Milk Producers Vote Approval Georgia milk producers voted to continue their commodity commission for another three years during a referendum held last month. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin reported that 76 percent of those voting were in favor of continuing the Georgia Milk Commission's producer-funded programs of research, promotion and education. Out of 245 ballots returned, 182 producers voted to continue the commission, while 58 negative votes were received. A favorable vote of 66 2/3 percent of those producers voting was necessary in order to continue the commission. Farm Front Watermelon Board Selects Georgians Secretary of Agriculture Edward Madigan recently appointed three Georgians to serve on the 29-member National Watermelon Promotion Board. Oren Childers, a Cordele watermelon producer, was reappointed to serve on the board. A Vienna watermelon producer, Charles L. Collins, and Thomasville watermelon handler, Gregory Hamil, were among new appointees to the promotion board. These individuals will all serve a three-year term ending Dee. 31,1994. The National Watermelon Promotion Board, authorized under the Watermelon Research and Promotion Act of 1985, is comprised of 13 producer members, 14 handler members and one public member, all appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture from nominations forwarded to him from seven watermelon producing districts. Buddy jLeger of Cordele, currently serves as chairman of the board. The board administers a national research and promotion program to increase the consumption of U.S. watermelolis.
