GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 78, No. 4 Ga. Farmers Benefit From GPFES Efforts The fertilizer industry has come a long way in a short period of time. By the mid-1900s, new technology was revolutionizing the industry, and agricultural research programs were spawning new production practices for all kinds of crops. The acceptance and use of commercial fertilizer and limestone was growing rapidly, and a tremendous wealth ofinformation needed to be placed in the hands of Georgia farmers. With this problem in mind, representatives of the fertilizer industry and the University of Georgia Col- Qur guest columnist this week is R.G. "Joe" Register, immediate past president, the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society Inc., P.O. Box 246, Savannah, GA 31402._____________________ lege of Agriculture organized the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society. This group combined industry resources with the personnel and facilities of the university to promote the proper use of plant food and cultural practices to increase farm income and conserve soil resources. The number one objective of GPFES has always been and continues to be supplying the best available information to its members and ultimately to Georgia farmers. GPFES's partnership with the College of Agriculture, the Experiment Station System and the Cooperative Extension Service assures an unbiased and reliable source of information. Over the years scientifically conducted research has led to GPFES sponsored programs in balanced fertility, integrated pest management and other topics. GPFES promotes the judicious use of fertilizer and environmentally sound cultural practices that increase farm income as well as the sustainability of Georgia agriculture. Now over 400 strong, our membership is on an individual basis. On the society's rolls are persons from every facet of the fertilizer industry, universities and government institutions. The organization also offers a number of educational opportunities for members, such as an annual and summer meeting, soil fertility (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, January 23,1991 Farm Front EPA Exempts Pesticide for Use on Ga. The program for the evening of January 29 will include a reception, dinner, election of 1991 officers and presentation of the annual Agribusiness Achievement Award, The legislative breakfast will begin at 7:30 a>in, January 30. For more information, call 1 800-726-2474, Tommy Irvin's request for a specific exemption for the use of the pesticide streptomycin to control a new disease, Pseudomonas spp., which causes serious damage to the state's Vidalia onion crop. "This comes as welcome news to the producers of one of of state's premier crops," said Irvin, "Pesticides currently labeled for use on onions do not control this species of Pseudomonas and without streptomycin, our producers could face losses exceeding $12 million." Onions infected by Pseudomonas spp. develop a leaf blight and soft rot which can completely destroy the onion. Streptomycin controls closely related diseases on tomatoes and peppers, and according to Irvin, researchers feel it is the best alternative for controlling this disease for the 1990/91 Vidalia onion crop. This year, early projections indicate some 9,000 acres will be devoted to the commodity, nearly double the acreage in 1990. Rural Development Assistance Available For Forest Projects The Georgia Forestry Commission, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service's Southern Region, has announced the 1991 Rural Development Initiative. The initiative, funded by Congress, is designed to help bring about long-term improvements in jobs, income opportunities, and the quality of life for rural communities through the management of human resources. Federal financial cost-share as- sistance will be made available ag consumer line... through the Georgia Forestry Commission. The awards, not to exceed $20,000 per project, will be provided on a 50/50 matching basis to quali- Q: I started several pear and orange trees from seeds and all of them came up with thorns. Can you explain to me why this happened? fied rural development proposals involving forestry in the following areas: A: Many fruits are the results of genetic mutations and do not produce trees that are the same variety as the parents when started from seeds. The offspring from the seeds may be wild-type trees, which can have thorns and often produce hard, small fruit that is tasteless. If you want to get the same variety of tree you started with, you must graft or bud that variety onto seedling rootstock. * Analyses and assessments of rural development opportunities. * Outdoor recreation development. * Wood products and other forest resource-based development. * Rural development planning and marketing. Project proposals for the federal financial assistance must be sub- A: Molasses is a thick, brown syrup that is obtained by processing the liquid extracted from sugar cane. Molasses is the dense part of cane syrup that sinks to the bottom when the liquid is boiled to make granulated sugar. Sorghum syrup comes from sorghum cane, which is a relative of sugar cane. For further proposal guidelines, contact Fred Alien, Chief of Forest Research, at (912) 744-3353. *** Q: There are crystals in the bottom of my jar of honey. Can anything be done about this? Cattlemen's Association Will Meet in Columbus A: Remove the lid and put the jar in a container of hot water for a few minutes. You can also heat the honey in a microwave oven to dissolve the crystals. Put one cup of honey in a container suitable for the microwave and heat on high for 2-3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. Be careful not to boil or scorch the honey.
