MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 78, No. 26 Equine Events Featured In Georgia State Games Georgia horse show buffs will have the I opportunity to sample 'the 1996 Olympics when they compete in the 1991 Georgia State Games at Chicopee Woods Agri-Center in Gainesville, July 2022. The equestrian event is one of 28 individual and team contests which will be open to amateur competitors. The competition, which will include classes in dressage, combined test, huntseat and western will be open to all breeds of horses and is sanctioned by the American Horse Shows Association. Medals will be awarded to the highest placing amatuer Georgia residents in four categories including 13 and under, 14-17, adult men and adult women. The Georgia State Games is an Olympic sports festival styled after the Summer Olympic Games. First held in 1990, the games are designed to promote participation in amateur sports by citizens of all ages and skill levels. With district and state events, more than 25,000 competitiors of all ages are expected to participate. For more information on the equestrian event, please contact Sherry Frank at (404) 926-3870 or C.J. Johnson at (404) 967-2007. Planting Progresses Under Drier Weather Drier weather in much of the state has allowed for active planting and harvesting progress, according to the latest report from the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Farmers took advantage of the clearer skies by making final plantings of cotton and peanuts. Soybean plantings advanced sharply, but still trailed last year and the five year average. Harvest of small grains and fruit crops made good progress, with watermelon harvest ahead of average and the peach harvest passing the halfway mark. Through mid-June, the peanut crop was rated 81 percent good, 4 percent excellent; cotton Was rated 74 percent good, 17 percent excellent; and sorghum 90 percent good, 5 percent excellent. Q: When I purchased a bag of oranges recently, I found a piece of paper inside the bag that said "Limited Permit, USDA, Federal Domestic Quarantine, Not for distribution in American Samoa, Arizona, California, Guam (and other states and territories)." Does this mean that something is wrong with this fruit and it is unsafe to eat? A: This tag does not mean the fruit is unsafe to eat. It is placed on certain types of fruit (usually citrus) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and it prohibits fruit from one state or U.S. territory to enter other states or territories that grow the same fruit commercially. This is to prevent the spread of any diseases from one area to another. These diseases are not a threat to humans, but to the trees only. ###* Q: Can you tell me how to get rid of the poison ivy in my yard? It's taking over after all the rain and hot weather we've had. A: Our horticulturist recommends that you use glyphosate (sold as Roundup) to control this unwelcomed "guest." Apply it on a fair day when no rain is predicted, preferably in the morning. Be sure to follow the label directions for controlling woody vines. Apply the product only on plants you wish to kill, because it will kill any vegetation that it touches. Glyphosate will not poison the soil. While ostriches are hardy, gregarious creatures, their most attractive quality probably is their profitability. A breeder pair may cost $35,000, but an average hen will lay 50 eggs per season. Since fertile eggs currently command about $3,000 apiece, the potential for profit is obvious. "It's still a breeder's market," said Suzanne Shingler of Fowler Farms, Albany, who along with partner Wayne Fowler has been raising ostriches, emus, camels and other exotic animals for the past ten years. According to Shingler and others in the industry, the breeder's market is expected to hold for the next few years until supplies catch up with demand, after which prices can be expected to fall sharply, although there should be continued demand for ostrich leather, feathers and meat. The soft leather, made from the hide of the bird's pink- or blue-skinned legs, is used for custom boots, purses and gloves. Os- trich feathers sell for about $1,000 a pound, according to Shingler, and can be harvested every nine months. The meat is reportedly low in fat and cholesterol, with a taste The most striking thing about ostriches is their size. They are the largest living birds, with adults weighing between 155 and 330 pounds. Males stand between 6.9 and nine feet tall, while females range from 5.7 to 6.2 feet in height. described as a cross between chicken and pork. Even the eggshells, because of their outlandish size, are popular with painters and craftspeople. Prior to the mid-1980s, ostriches were raised primarily on large African ranches. In 1986, then-President Reagan signed the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, banning the importation of 50,000 South African ostrich hides per year. Additionally, USDA prohibited the importation of ostriches or their eggs, beginning in August 1989, but after a comment period in late 1990, has revised their rules to permit importation under certain conditions. These rules should be published within the next week. The antiapartheid legislation also is currently being reviewed in Washington. Because it is a relatively new industry in the United States, ostrich raising should be regarded as highly speculative, according to Robert Bastien, extension poultry scientist with the University of Georgia. Bastien said that while our (Continued on page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 26,1991 Farmland for rent or lease // you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Michelle Hayes at 6519084.
