GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol.78, No. 20 Use Proper Precautions * To Remove Unwanted Bees Honey bees are one of man's best insect friends. Not only do they * provide honey, but bees are essential to pollinate many of our nation's crops, not to mention many ,, flowers and other plants we enjoy. But when they take up residence inside the walls of homes or other buildings, they can become a nui" sance. If this is a problem for you, there are two possible solutions. One is to /.. try and remove the bees and save the swarm; however, this is usually a job best left to a professional beekeeper. The Market Bulletin occasionally has notices in its advertising section for individuals who offer this service in exchange for the bees. County Extension offices or local bee equipment suppliers also can often supply the names of people willing to collect swarms. The other solution is to kill the bees with an insecticide. If you choose this option, follow these , guidelines to ensure you perform the job safely and effectively: * When the bees have settled down, usually in the early morning ' or late afternoon, seal all entrances except one with cloth or caulking compound. If you need a light in r order to see, cover it with red cellophane (bees are unable to see red). * Apply the insecticides Sevin or Lindane into the entrance hole. Usually one application is sufficient, but make a second treatment (Continued on page 12) Organic Growers Sponsor Composting Class and Tour The Georgia Organic Growers Association will host a program on small-scale composting for gardeners and others interested in reducing the volume of household garbage destined for landfills. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m., May 16, at the Hastings Garden Center, 2350 Cheshire Bridge Rd., Atlanta. On May 18, 9:30 a.m. - noon, GOGA will sponsor a tour of a large-scale organic vegetable operation at Koinonia Farms, on Route 49,12 miles south of Americus. Both events are free and open to the public. For more information on the farm tour, call (912) 623-5545. For information on the composting class, call (404) 621-4642. Wednesday, May 15,1991 ag consumer line . Q. Several years ago, I read an article about a type of mushroom that is grown on oak logs. Can you tell me what kind it is and a little about it? A: The mushroom you are referring to is shiitake (pronounced she-tah- key), which is grown widely in Japan and other Asian countries. The number of American shiitake fanners is increasing, although most of them operate on a small scale. The fungi are grown on hardwood logs and, in this country, oak is most commonly used. The mushrooms are brownish in color, and the fresh caps are 2-5 inches in diameter. They have a smoky, full-bodied flavor and spongy texture. According to a plant pathologist with the University of Georgia, shiitake will grow well in northern Georgia, but probably not in the southern part of the state. *** Q: My neighbor is not removing the dead animals from his hog pen and the smell is really strong around here. I know that the law requires people to dispose of their dead livestock properly, so I would like for you to send an inspector to check into this situation as soon as possible. A: Our inspector went to the farm and spoke with the owner about burying the dead animals properly. As you probably know by now, all of the dead hogs have been buried, so you and your neighbors can breathe more easily. If you have problems or questions concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write Consumer Services, Room 300, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334, or call toll-free, 1-800-282-5852, or 656-3645 in metro Atlanta. GRFA Provides Incentive For Low-Income Housing In 1987, then-governor Joe Frank Harris selected the Georgia Residential Finance Authority to administer a new housing program. The Low-Income Housing Credit is designed to promote development of low-income rental housing through federal tax incentives rather than direct subsidies. Because there is a limit to the amount of credit available to each state, the Authority allocates this credit to qualified rental property owners on a competitive basis. To explain this program in more detail, the Authority will hold workshops around the state. The scheduled workshops are as follows: May 23, Augusta; May 29, Cordele; May 30, Columbus; May 31, Atlanta; June 4, Valdosta; and June 5, Brunswick. Pre-registration is required, and the fee is $50. For more information contact Ethel Brown, Georgia Residential Finance Authority, 60 Executive Parkway South, Suite 250, Atlanta GA 30329, (404) 679-4840. Early May showers and thunderstorms over much of the state continued to slow planting progress in Georgia- Peanut progress through May 5, at 33 percent sown, lagged 22 points behind last year's pace and 13 percent behind the five-year average. The peanut crop condition was rated 18 percent fair, 73 percent good and 9 percent excellent. Cotton planting was also well behind average, as wet tion ^ Risk of Lyme Disease Increases With Return of Warmer Weather With temperatures rising and outdoor activities increasing, the risk of exposure to Lyme disease, as well as other tick-borne diseases, increases as well. Lyme disease was first identified in Lyme, Connecticut, in 1975 and has since spread to most of the rest of the United States, including Georgia, through the migratory patterns of white-tailed deer and wild birds on which adult ticks normally feed. In Georgia, the disease usually occurs during the months of May September when ticks are most active; however, onset of illness may occur at anytime during the year. Most patients experience the first symptoms within 3-32 days after having been bitten by an infected tick. The bacteria responsible for Lyme disease is harbored in the Northeastern deer tick and the Eastern black-legged tick. The minute size of these adult ticks, often compared to a pin head, poppy seed, or moving freckle, makes detection difficult. Symptoms in humans involve a characteristic bulls-eye rash on the skin surrounding the tick bite. If not treated promptly, the disease can cause fever, joint and muscle pain in the early stages; chronic fatigue and serious heart and nervous system involvement in later stages. While not considered a fatal disease, it can lead to fatalities in people who are very young, very old or those with heart problems or weakened immune systems. Avoiding exposure to ticks is the best method for preventing Lyme disease. Experts recommend wearing long pants and light-colored clothing whenever in grasslands or woods. Use tick repellants such as PermanoneTM with permethrin for clothing and insect repellants with DEBT for the skin. Routinely use insecticide dips, sprays and collars on your pets. Examine them and your family members after outings and remove attached ticks with tweezers as close to the skin as possible. The sooner the ticks are removed, the less chance there is of infection. The site of the bite also should be cleaned with disinfectant. In an upcoming edition of the Market Bulletin, we will take a closer look at Lyme Disease in live- stock and other domestic animals. Page 4 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 15,1991 Helping Each Other Dear Editor: I heartily concur with letter writer Proctor re: the jangling misuse of another of our irreplaceable Southernisms in corrupting the homely and comfortable Light'd or Lightered into some monstrous misbegotten hybrid called Fat Lighter. I would further like to clarify this flaming issue by recalling the origin of the term. It is of course Light Wood or Lighter Wood, which we all used to kick up in the woods, knock loose down to the core of fat, resinous pine and take home to be split into Kindlin'. This Light Wood has been mellowed over the past 300 years into Light'ood or Lightered, which only a tenthgeneration, card-carrying Southerner can pronounce properly. Marion August Baldwin, M.D. P.O. Box 340 Rabun Gap, GA 30568 Dear Editor: Our family stayed at an old inn in North Carolina last summer where we really enjoyed playing the old-time game of skittles. If anyone has a game of skittles that they would be willing to part with, please contact me at the address below. Joyce Hoge 11565FindleyRd. Duluth, GA30136 (404) 476-2775 Dear Editor: I have a celiac-sprue disease and have to be on a diet free of glutens such as those in wheat, rye, oat and barley protein. One of the flours I need is potato, and I can't find it here. If anyone knows where I can get potato flour and recipes, I would appreciate it very much. Preble Pate Rt. 2, Box 863 Doerun, GA 31744 Dear Editor: Does anyone know the name of this quilt? My memory tells me it was designed to celebrate the Bicentennial Year -- 1976 -- but the date on the back of the photo is earlier than that. The quilt was made by a delightful lady named Lily Belle Rivers, who lived near McDonough. If anyone knows the name of this quilt and the story behind the name, please write to me and let me know.
