MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN, COMMISSIONER Vol. 78, No. 14 Grasscycling Benefits Lawns, Environment Grasscycling is a new term for the old practice of leaving the clippings on your lawn after mowing. This forgotten practice of naturally recycling grass clippings is environmentally sound, saves time, saves energy, and saves our rapidly declining landfill space. It also provides an additional benefit a greener, healthier lawn. During spring and summer bagged lawn clippings increase Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Gil Landry, Extension Agronomist-Turf and Grasscycling program coordinator, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, Athens, GA 30602. solid waste by 20 to 50 percent. This consumes valuable landfill space and increases the burden on our trash collection system. Turfgrasses are an important part of our environment, thus grasscycling is a responsible environmental practice. Turfgrasses 1) protect our soils from erosion and our surface waters from sediment deposition; 2) cool our environment through transpiration; 3) protect our surface water and ground water by asborbing chemicals in the thatch layer and root system; 4) increase infiltration or water movement into the soil and out of the storm system; and 5) enhance property values and recreational surfaces. Grasscycling has been used for years by lawncare professionals, but is a practice that can be used by any individual who mows and maintains a lawn. With this thought in mind, April has been recognized as National Lawn Care Month to heighten public awareness of the important contribution lawn caretakers make to the good health of the world's environment. By promoting the practice of grasscycling, lawn care profession- APRIL IS NATIONAL LAWN CARE MONTH (Continued on page 16) Wednesday, April 3,1991 Students from across the state recently competed in the 9th annual Agriculture Day contest coordinated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agribusiness Council. Vidalia Onion Crop Suffers Late Damage From Freeze The Vidalia onion crop has just begun to show some damage from the freeze experienced in the growing area several weeks ago. In a report he made to the Vidalia Onion Committee, Max Smith, retired County Extension Agent and crop consultant, said, "The late effects I'm seeing now from the freeze indicate Vidalia onion yield may be off as much as 30 percent." The Georgia Department of Agriculture has reported 7,000 acres of Vidalia onions registered this year which is a 23 percent increase from 1990. A 30 percent crop loss would result in approximately 7% less productionthan 1990. According to Reid Torrance, Tattnall County Extension Agent, this could be the largest loss in yield since the freeze of 1985. "Even though we've had an increase in acreage, with the prob- (Continued on page 16) Farm Front Fungicide Recall A nation-wide stop sale and recall has been issued by E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company of all Benlate and Tersan 1991 fungicide products. The products affected are: Benlate 50 DF {EPA Reg. No. 352-447), Benlate 1991 DF and Tersan 1991 (both products have EPA Reg. No. 352507). Du Pont took this action after low levels of the herbicide, atrazine, were detected in some of the products. Georgia nurserymen, farmers and other consumers are advised to discontinue use of these products, used to control disease, on a wide variety of ornamental and food crops, and to contact their local dealer for instruction on returning the fungicide. Use of the contaminated products could result in the damage or stunting of plants due to the presence of atrazine. However, the level of atrazine that may be contained in Benlate and Tersan poses (Continued on page 16) Proper Insurance Plan Needed To Protect Handicraft Business A big consideration for small business owners is deciding on the type and amounts of insurance needed. Insurance can be many things, but from a business standpoint, consider it a tool to help you make long range financial decisions about your business. The first step toward acquiring protection is to become aware of the The Market Bulletin would like to thank Fulton County Extension Agent Robert Brannen for contributing this continuing series of articles on starting and conducting a home-based handicraft business. risks you and your business are exposed to. Of the many perils we face every day, some are obviously more important than others. As a business owner, you must decide which risks you are most vulnerable to and how much loss you might suffer from each. Make a list and cover your largest potential loss exposure first. Health care costs have increased so dramatically in recent years that many business owners place liability or personal injury coverage above everything else. If customers do not come to your place of business and you are the only employee, liability and health insurance may not be high priorities for you. In such a case, property insurance for your equipment and crafts, or some other type of coverage, may be first on your list. Different kinds of coverage are available at different costs. Crime losses, product liability, employee theft and business interruptions can all be covered. Even key person insurance is available to protect those businesses whose survival is determined by the health and productivity of one key person. One axiom of insurance is to buy a policy with as high a deductible as you can afford. A policy providing total coverage is not always economical because of the high cost of covering the first dollar lost. A policy can be much less expensive if (Continued on page 16) Special Handicraft Edition See Ads Pages 14-15 The next handicraft edition of the Market Bulletin will be published May 1. The deadline for notices is April 17. An affidavit stating that the handicraft item was made by the individual advertiser, and not purchased for resale, must be included with the notice. Otherwise, it will not be published. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, April 3,1991 we id Uttvu * ar Dear Editor: I would like to know if it was customary for early 20th century farm families to use an upstairs room in the main farm house-(dwelling house) for storing cured hams and/or produce. Our office has had this use proposed separately for three historic farmhouses in the area between Newnan and McDonough. We would like to know why this was done rather than using a smokehouse or other outbuilding. If anyone has heard of this practice or has a personal story about this usage, please contact me. Page 16 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, April 3,1991 If you're looking for a drought tolerant perennial to add to your garden, consider butterfly weed. This native flowering plant not only will add a splash of color during the summer months, but as its name implies, is among the favorite plants of butterflies. With a rich diversity of native plants and terrain, Georgia pro vides an ideal habitat for over 160 species of butterflies. In 1988, the tiger swallowtail was named the state butterfly for Georgia. To attract our state butterfly and other species to your yard, you might consider establishing a but terfly feeding station. Place a brightly colored plastic scrubbing pad in a plastic dish almost deep enough to completely cover it. Fill the dish with a sugar solution (one part white sugar dissolved in seven parts water). Butterflies will think the scrubbing pad is a flower and land directly on it to sip the sugarwater nectar. You also can attract butterflies by placing peeled bananas or other fruit on a pedestal, similar to a bird feeding station. Since butterflies prefer well-rotted fruit, you'll only need to replace it every 10 days. You can make hanging miniplanters from egg-shaped panty hose containers. Puncture holes in the sides and insert string for hang ing. Wanted: Garden Tips. . . If you have a tried and true garden hint, we'd like to hear from you. Grasscycling (Continued from page 1) als are playing a crucial role in today's efforts to solve America's solid waste crisis. And through their own grasscycling efforts, indi vidual citizens can play a major role in protecting the environment. The University of Georgia Coop erative Extension Service also is promoting a grasscycling program throughout our state. At present this is the only Extension Service in the nation currently promoting grasscycling on a statewide basis. Let's all join the lawn care profes sionals throughout our nation in promoting the practice of grasscy cling. If we all become involved in this effort, we will help to eliminate millions of tons of yard waste from landfillls and produce greener, healthier lawns. For more information on grasscy cling, call your local lawn care professional or local county Exten sion office. Wet Fields Slow Planting Consumer Service Vital Wet fields over much of Ag Department Function the state's main crop grow ing area continued to slow planting of early row crops, according to the March 25 report from the Georgia Ag ricultural Statistics Service. Warmer temperatures helped to dry fields and raise soil temperatures to a mor suitable level for seed germination. Crop condition ratings for the emerged early planted row crops such as corn, wat ermelons and transplanted tobacco were well above the previous week due to the warmer temperatures. Planting progress contin ued well behind the same period last year and the average for the early row crops. Disease problems were reported showing up in a few tobacco beds in ex treme south Georgia. The column will update consumers on department ac tivities and services as well as pro vide timely tips and information on consumer issues and events. When Melissa Brown discovered higher prices than those advertised in her local paper during a trip to the supermarket, she didn't know whom to call. Like many Georgians, if asked "What is the function of the Geor gia Department of Agriculture?" Melissa would likely give one of the following responses: "To help the farmer produce a good crop;" "to oversee farming in Georgia;" or "to promote Georgia farm products." And while these responses are correct in their assessment of what the department does for the farmer, they omit an equally important per son: the consumer. line pump at a service station. These items display inspection decals as evidence that the depart ment is working constantly to ver ify safety, accuracy and equity in the marketplace. Each division within the Georgia Department of Agriculture func tions in some capacity that directly or indirectly benefits the consumer. For example, animal disease eradication efforts ensure the pro duction of quality milk and food products and prevent economic losses on the farm that would result in higher prices for consumers. In spection and licensing of retail food establishments assure consumers that food is processed, sold and stored in a safe and sanitary envi ronment. Registration of products such as household disinfectants, home and garden insect repellants, flea pow ders and pet shampoos helps pre vent consumers from purchasing unsafe products; and, monitoring pesticide applications assures con sumers of accountability in the pest control industry.
