FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin "Vol.77, No. 9 Wednesday, February 28,1990 Weights and Measures Focus of Observance Department Monitors Milk from Cow to Consumer Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced that March 1-7 will be observed as National Weights and Measures Week, to corqmemorate the signing of the first weights and measures law on March 2, 1799. , The theme of this year's observI ance is "Progress through Consensus Among Consumer Regulators and Industry." This theme highlights the continued work towards uniformity in labeling and packaging laws, specifications and tolerances, education and inspection methods. All these efforts assist consumers and businesses by en' forcing equity in the marketplace, Irvin said. NATIONAL WEIGHTS & MEASURES WEEK March 1 to 7 Progress Through Consensus Among Consumers, Regulators and Industry This year also commemorates the 75th anniversary of the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (formerly the National Bureau of Standards) and the U.S. Department of Commerce. "Our Weights and Measures Division is a member of NCWM and supports the effort in uniformity through their annual meetings as they formulate model laws, uniform training, specifications and tolerances for devices," Irvin said. Consumers with problems or concerns about weighing and measuring devices or practices in the state may call the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Fuels and Measures Division in Atlanta at (404) 6563605. Take Precautions Now For Spring Tornadoes Tornadoes continue to pose a serious threat to lives and property in Georgia. Last year, four people were killed by tornadoes in the state, the first tornado-related fatalities since 1977. More Georgians are injured by tornadoes than by any other weather-related event. (Continued on page 16) From infancy until we reach our golden years, we rely on milk as an important source of nutrients necessary for the proper development and maintenance of the human body. Because this dairy product plays such a significant role in our diets, it is no wonder that distorted reports which question the safety of our milk supplies cause concern. This is the second in a series of articles which will address food safety concerns and what is being done to protect consumers. Prior to the 1930's, most milk and dairy products were produced on the farm or in the local area where they were consumed, and there were no uniform quality standards or routine testing procedures to monitor the quality of milk. For this reason, a number of healthrelated problems were associated with dairy products. Today Georgia's population depends on dairy products produced and processed in a small number of facilities with widespread distribution over many states. Because milk is such a vital part of the daily diets of Georgians, the Georgia Depart- Vegetable Conference Sponsored For Potential Buyers and Sellers In an effort to increase fresh vegetable sales by bringing potential buyers and sellers together, the Georgia Department of Agriculture is serving as a sponsor of the TriState Vegetable Marketing Conference, Feb. 27-28, 1990, in Greenville, S.C., according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The conference is the culmination of the Tri-State Vegetable research project which was designed to evaluate the prospects of vegetable production in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Conference topics will include the potential of vegetable production in the TriState Region spotlighting the successes of buyers, brokers and producers, along with presentations on crop sequencing, international markets, new cultural practices, and opportunities for the 90's. "We hope that this conference will encourage farmers to carefully evaulate the feasiblity of growing vegetables," said Irvin, "and at the same time, introduce buyers to the high quality produce already being grown in these three states." Currently, Georgia has approximately 170,000 acres in fresh vegetable production including both spring and fall crops, according to University of Georgia Extension specialists. Acreage devoted to growing vegetables has increased at a rate of 10 to 15 percent each year over the last five years with over 220,000 acres expected in 1990. "Georgia farmers produce a full line of high quality vegetables making our state second only to Florida in both acreage and cash receipts in the Southeast," said Irvin. "With our long growing season, mild weather and diverse crops, Georgia has the ingredients to become one of the nation's top produce suppliers." Georgia vegetable producers exhibiting at the Tri-State Conference include the Georgia Vegetable Co. of Tifton, Gibbs Patrick Farms Inc. of Omega, Hopkins Farms of Cairo, Fresh Farm Products Inc. of Americus, Oconee River Produce Inc. of Mt. Vernon, Calhoun Produce of Ashburn, Farm Fresh Produce Inc. of Lyons, and the Vidalia Onion Committee of Vidalia. ment of Agriculture devotes much time and money to make certain it is safe to consume. "The amount of funds we have to spend on monitoring milk almost seems inadequate when you consider the responsibility we are charged with carrying out,' said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. During 1989, the department devoted $1.1 million to the Dairy Division and lab budget and 1/6 of the total food regulatory budget to milk and dairy products. In fact, the department devotes more funds for monitoring the quality and safety of milk than for any other single food product. (Continued on page 16) The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Dairy Laboratory conducts thousands of tests on dairy samples each year. Henry Clerke, Senior Lab Technician, is shown above checking milk samples for the presence of harmful bacteria. Pseudorabies Update In last week's edition of Market Bulletin it was inadvertently reported that Georgia was set to move into Stage III of the Pseudorabies Eradication Program. This, however in untrue. Georgia is currently involved in Stage II which is the Control Phase of the program. This involves tracing all pseudorabies positive animals to the herd of origin. The herd of origin is tested and positive animals are permitted to slaughter. All breeding swiiu, returning to farms from feeder pig sales are tested at market. The editor regrets the error and any confusion caused by the previous article.
