MARKET BULLETIIM GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN, COMMISSIONER Vol. 77, No. 45 Wednesday, November 21, 1990 Give Thanks For Farmers In the words of the late Lyndon B. Johnson, "In a thousand unseen ways we have drawn shape and strength from the land." These words are more poignant today than ever before for urban and rural communities alike. With our rural areas shrinking, we tend to forget that the food on our table and clothes on our backs are provided through agriculture. Truly the strength of our nation lies in our ability to produce food and fiber for Americans and the world. It is certainly hard for countries importing our commodities to turn against us, if we are feeding their people. With our plentiful food supplies, we often take for granted that today less than two percent of our nation works in production agriculture. Modern farming technology has freed the rest of us for other occupations and provided for many others with 1 in 5 jobs in the food and fiber sector. Americans annually spend more than $375 billion on food produced on our nation's farms and ranches. But what many consumers do not realize is that roughly three-quarters of the average food dollar pays for getting the food from farms to the table. This money goes for food to be assembled, stored, processed, packaged and transported even before it reaches the wholesale and retail markets. With recent technological advances and increased farm inputs, today's farms are more efficient than ever. They now can produce two and one-half times more than in 1930, even though the nation's agricultural resource base has not changed substantially since that time. This year, Thanksgiving for some Georgia farmers will be difficult because of the drought. Without federal assistance, this will be the last year for many of them to be involved in an occupation that is not only a job, but a lifestyle. Stock up and freeze or refrigerate shelled pecans for convenient use in your favorite recipes throughout the year. A brochure featuring year-round pecan recipes is available by sending a stamped, self-addressed business-sized envelope to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, 328 Agriculture Blvd., Capitol Square, Atlanta, Ga. 30334.
