FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 77, No. 4 Wednesday, January 24,1990 Fruit Trees Proper Care Ensures Successful Production ' Homegrown fruit trees not only produce delicious, fresh fruit, but they also contribute to the beauty of jthe landscape and help provide shade. If you like the idea of planting your own fruit trees, follow these guidelines to ensure you plant irees that will produce well. Most fruit trees should be planted during January and February while the trees are dormant. Small fruits also may be planted except figs, strawberries and pomegranates which should be planted in early jpring before they begin budding. To ensure the best selection of trees, shop early. Also, choose varieties which are adapted to Georgia's growing conditions. Consult your local county Extension agent for recommended varieties for your particular growing area. Before purchasing a tree, check the root system to make certain it has not dried out. Another way to determine whether the tree is still alive is to scratch the surface of the tree with your thumbnail. If it is ctill green underneath, the plant is still healthy. Another factor to consider when selecting fruit trees is whether or not they require cross pollenation in order to produce. Blackberries, peaches, pears and plums do not require pollenation though some varieties will produce more if they are cross pollenated. If the varieties you select do require cross pollination, consult your seed catalog or local nurseryman for suggestions on which varieties to plant with them to ensure fruit set. A good planting site is essential to the success of your fruit tree. In fact, selecting and preparing a good planting site will contribute more to the success of your tree than any later gardening procedure. Remove labels or wire attached to the tree to prevent girdling after growth begins. When planting, dig a hole at least 18 inches deep and 30 inches in diameter or large enough to spread the tree's roots without twisting or crowding them. Place the tree in the hole as straight as possible. Mix topsoil and organic matter and place in the hole. Firmly pack the soil around the tree and water it immediately. (Continued on page 5) 1989 Yields Increase for Most Georgia Crops Fresh, homegrown blueberries are a treat that more and more Georgians enjoy in the spring and summer. The cold months now are the time for fruit tree selection and planting. Most Georgia 1989 crop yields improved over 1988 in response to above normal rainfall and moderate temperatures, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Although most crops fared better in 1989 than in 1988, some, like peanuts and soybeans, did not live up to earlier expectations due to diseases and insects late in the growing season. The only crops that failed to improve yields from 1988 were wheat, oats, rye and tobacco, which were hurt by insects, disease and too much rain in the early summer. Handicraft Edition Georgia Cooking......page 5 Handicrafts............page 11 Bulletin Calendar ...page 11 1990 Agriculture Day Contest Announced March 18-24, 1990, has been designated National Agriculture Week to increase awareness of our nation's agriculture industry and to pay tribute to those people who provide our nation with food and fiber. In addition, March 22 of that week has been declared as Agriculture Day in Georgia. And as part of the observance, the Market Bulletin is again sponsoring an Agriculture Day contest. This year the National Agriculture Week theme, "Honoring America's Providers," has been modified for the state contest to "Honoring Georgia's Providers: Meeting the Challenges of the '90's." There are three contest divisions: grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12. A first, second and third place winner will be announced in each age division. Contest judges reserve the right to award honorable mentions, but no prize money will be awarded in these categories. Contestants may submit entries in two categories visual and written. The deadline for entries is Feb. 23, 1990, so contestants are urged to get started now. General Guidelines Name, age, grade, school, home county and phone number (including area code) should be written legibly in ink, or typed, and attached to the top of the poems or essays, or done on a separate sheet of paper attached to all photos or artwork. The theme "Honoring Georgia's Providers: Meeting the Challenges of the '90's" should be featured by all entrants. The winning entries will best express or depict this theme. Entries in both the written and the visual divisions will be separated according to the three grade divisions, then judged together. For instance, a photo may take first place, an essay, second place and a poem, third place in each grade division. All entries become the property of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and cannot be returned to the owner. The contest is restricted to Georgia residents. Winners in each of the age divisions will be announced in the Bulletin. Mail contest entries to Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin, P.O. Box 38313, Atlanta, 30334. Only one entry per person, per category, is allowed. Those entrants submitting work in both the written and visual categories must note this on their information sheet which includes their name, address, phone number, etc. Any entry which does not adhere to all of these General Guidelines may be rejected. (Continued on page 12) Corn averaged a record-breaking 95 bushels per acre, surpassing Georgia's previous record high in 1982 by 10 bushels per acre and last year's drought-damaged crop by 33 bushels per acre. Georgia's 1989 corn production was 52.3 million bushels, 69 percent more than in 1988. Total corn acreage planted in 1989 was 610 thousand acres. Acreage harvested for grain totaled 550 thousand acres; acreage harvested for silage totaled 40 thousand acres. Soybeans in 1989 averaged 26 bushels per acre in Georgia, the highest since 1982 and one bushel more than in 1988. Early in the growing season, soybeans had record high yield potential, which was steadily reduced by insects and dry conditions at critical stages in the growing season. Wet conditions in late June and early July kept some acreage intended for soybeans from being planted. Total planted soybean acreage in 1989 was 1.15 million acres, 24 percent more than in 1988. Acreage harvested totaled 1.10 million acres; soybean production totaled 28.6 million acres, both up from 1988. Peanut yields averaged 2,700 pounds per acre in 1989, up 70 pounds from 1988. Peanut diseases were widespread in 1989, reducing quality and quantity more than expected early in the year. Peanut production was 1.85 billion pounds, (Continued on page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, January 24,1990 Farm employment If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Mia Haney 651-9082.
