GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN, COMMISSIONER Vol. 77, No. 39 Wednesday, October 10, 1990 Sunbelt Grows In Value to Ga. With each successful Sunbelt Ag ricultural Exposition, the event be comes even more valuable to Geor gia's farmers and agribusinessmen. ----T--h--e --la--t--es--t--i--n; aogprimcuenlttusriasl sdheavreeld- at the Sunbelt Expo with the Georgia farmer; he views demon strations of effi cient ways to manage a success ful' farming opera tion. For Geor gia's agribusi nessmen, a local, state, regional, national, and international busi ness market is opened to them at the Expo. A well-balanced blending occurs at each Expo -- a profitable mixing Our guest columnist this week is L. Edward White, director, Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition, and head, Rural Development Center and Conferences, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, College of Agriculture, P.O. The end result: reaching a high level of production so services and products can be sold cheaper to Georgians. Who benefits? You. In 1989, 196 of Sunbelt's 657 exhibitors were from Georgia. The economic impact of Sunbelt on South Georgia for the year was $8.9 million. Going beyond the monetary gains reaped because of the show, the Sunbelt Expo is of value as a dis seminator of educational informa tion. The University of Georgia Co operative Extension Service special ists conduct demonstrations on site at Sunbelt. By following Extension recom mendations, the Expo farm staff has been able to exceed average crop yields on marginal land. For exam ple, cotton yields have exceeded 1,000 Ibs. of lint each year for the past 12 years, since Expo's incep tion in 1978. Farmers will benefit likewise from the educational infor mation available at Sunbelt. (Continued on page 12) Farm Front Farmers Urged to Test Peanut Hay For Aflatoxin Galecron/Fundal Return Program Announced For Chlordimeform Stocks Georgia Commissioner of Agiculture Tommy Irvin is advising farmers to have their peanut hay tested for possible aflatoxin contami nation. Because the drought sig nificantly reduced peanut yields and nut quality in many areas of the state, some farmers are trying to salvage their crop by baling it into hay and using it as a feed additive for their live stock. But vines, particu larly those which have not been harvested for their nuts, contain aflatoxin. "According to reports from our Federal-State Grading Service, the num ber of dryland peanuts with aflatoxin contamination is up significantly," said Irvin. "Because extreme drought (Continued on page 12) Officials in Georgia have ap proved a plan which will make it possible for farmers around the state to return leftover stocks of the cotton insecticide chlordimeform to the product's manufacturers. Chlor dimeform is known by the trade names Galecron and Fundal. Although existing stocks of chlor dimeform in Georgia are believed to be small, even small quantities of cancelled pesticides can present sig nificant problems to Georgia farm ers when attempting to properly dispose of the material. Not only is disposal costly, but it can be very complicated. Similar recall programs already conducted in Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas have proven to be very successful, and, said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, "We don't want to deprive Georgia farm ers of the same opportunity, even if there are only a few farmers who would benefit." Consumers Celebrate Apple Month in Georgia The federal registration for use of Galecron and Fundal was voluntar ily cancelled in 1989 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, at the request of CIBA-GEIGY Cor poration and NOR-AM Chemical Company, which manufactured and sold the product in the United States. Application of chlordime form became illegal after October 1, 1989. Galecron and Fundal had been registered for control of budworms and bollworms in cotton. The Galecron/Fundal return plan features a series of collection days scheduled for November 27, 28 and 29. On these days anyone holding stocks of chlordimeform (growers, dealers and pesticide contractors) will be allowed to bring their Gale cron or Fundal to designated collec tion sites without being subject to the usual reporting requirements associated with handling certain pesticides whose registrations have been cancelled. CIBA-GEIGY and NOR-AM will reimburse growers $75.00 per gal lon for unopened containers of Gale cron and Fundal and accept par tially used containers for disposal. To receive reimbursement, growers October is National Apple Month, and Georgia is the perfect place to celebrate. Crisp fall weather and fresh, Georgia apples just seem to go together naturally. Listed below are some facts about this whole some Georgia product. Apple production in Georgia for 1990 is estimated at 25.0 million pounds, which if realized, would equal 1989 production. There were 3,500 acres of apples harvested in Georgia in 1989 with an average yield of 7,140 pounds per acre. The value of production for Geor gia apples in 1988 was $4.2 million. While individual county produc tion figures are not available, Gilmer County is Georgia's traditional apple leader, with an estimated 166,999 commercial trees, more than four times as many as the next leading county and approximately 35 percent of the state's total. Habersham, Rabun and Fannin counties have increased their num ber of commercial apple trees in recent years, while the number of trees in middle Georgia has de clined. According to the latest report from the Georgia Agricultural Sta tistics Service, the statewide apple harvest is 72 percent complete, com pared with 60 percent at the same For a map of Georgia's apple country, please see page 12. time last year, and 78 percent for the five-year average. Statewide apple quality was rated 88 percent good, 5 percent fair, 6 percent poor and 1 percent very poor. According to Extension Horticul turist Stephen Myers, Georgia's apple harvest is in full swing, with producers turning their attention from picking to marketing. The apple season gets longer each year, (Continued on page 12) (Continued on page 12) ag consumer line... Q: Under my pecan tree I have found a number of branches that appear to have been cut off cleanly with a knife. What could be causing this, and is it a problem? A: The pecan girdler is a mediumsized brown beetle that very carefully chews a neat circle around twigs and then lays its eggs in the twigs. These girdled twigs usually break off and fall to the ground or lodge in the tree. To control this pest, gather and burn all fallen and lodged twigs, since they contain the beetle eggs and grubs. In addition, check nearby hickory and persimmon trees since the twig girdler also attacks these trees. The more girdled twigs you have in your trees, (Continued on page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, October 10,1990 Farm employment II you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Mia Haney 651-9082.
