GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 77, No. 37 Georgia Futurity One of the Best The Georgia Quarter Horse Association's Georgia National Futurity is quickly becoming one of the top futurity events in the nation, not only from the standpoint of payback money, but also from the quality of horses that it draws. Actually the event is not one futurity, but three combined-the Georgia Open Futurity, the Stallion Our guest columnist this week is Gary Selph, president of the Georgia Quarter Horse Association, 1185 Oleander Drive, Lilburn, Ga. 30247. Service Futurity and the Georgia Bred Futurity. Last year the association paid out over $120,000 in prize money. This year it has expanded its program to include several jackpot classes and a trail and western riding stakes, as well as NRHA Reining. The futurity will be held in conjunction with the first Annual Georgia National Fair at the all new Georgia Agricenter in Perry, Ga., next month. From October 11-14, the futurity will move into the Henry L. Reaves Arena and covered horse arena to showcase some of the best horses from across the country. There will be livestock events, concerts by Tanya Tucker and Billy Joe Royal for the show folks, plus midway attractions and other concerts by the fair itself. In addition to the usual futurity classes, this year's event will feature a Yearling Lounge Line Stakes. In this event, yearlings are allowed in the pen a few at a time and worked on lounge lines at a walk, trot and lope. They are scored by the judges on way of going at all three gaits, plus suitability for future performance under saddle. This unique new class should be an interesting addition to the schedule. To encourage futurity exhibitors to stay for the Sunday show, all classes on Sunday will be jackpot classes. Winners will be able to take home money as well as AQHA points. With the hard work and team efforts of the members of the GQHA, this year's futurity should be bigger and better then ever. The variety, Alfagraze, is suitable for intermittent grazing or time-limited continuous grazing if necessary, as well as for hay production and interplanting with pressure grasses. Any of these applications, with proper management, should improve protein intake over regular pasture grasses or hay, for dairy cattle, beef cattle, horses and sheep, according to Dr. Joe Bouton, professor of Agronomy at the University of Georgia, where the new variety was developed. The increase was due partially to increased crop production, as well as record high broiler production. Egg prices were the highest in 5 years. Receipts from farm marketings increased $299 million or 8 percent from 1988. Other farm income, excluding government payments, rose $5.0 million or 4 percent. Georgia farmers' gross farm income for 1989, which includes cash income, non-cash income, and inventory adjustment rose 9 percent to $4.3 billion. Farm production expenses at $3.12 billion were 8 percent above 1988 and the highest since 1984. Net farm income for 1989 was a record $1.22 billion, up 10 percent from 1988. Georgia farm products sold during 1989 including government payments and farm forest products generated cash receipts of $4.13 billion, 8 percent above the $3.83 billion for 1988. Crops accounted for 38.7 percent of the total, down from 40.5 percent in 1988. Poultry accounted for 38.2 percent of the total while livestock products accounted for 16.8 percent. Developing an alfalfa variety appropriate for Geor- gia's climate and the needs of Georgia farmers has been a longstanding goal of UGA researchers, Bou- ton said. In five years of testing at the Eatonton research farm, including intentional overgrazing, the Alfagraze was shown to be consistently resistant to decline, compared with other varieties of alfalfa and forage crops. Alfagraze is suitable for north Georgia, and as far south as Macon, according to Dr. Bouton, who added that further testing was underway at Tifton. This photo taken in early August shows cattle grazing on Alfagraze seeded in April. The first crop was taken for silage in early July, and two following crops were grazed. Dry matter production for the year on these (Continued on page 12) fields is estimated at 3.6 tons per acre.
