MARKET BULLETIIM GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN, COMMISSIONER Vol. 77, No. 25 Versatile Morgans Suited to Georgians There are almost as many ways to enjoy horses as there are horses to enjoy. While particular breeds are usually suited to specialized activities, such as Thoroughbreds to racing, fte~ Morgan is the breed that can do it all! The same Morgan you took to a show last weekend can go on a competitive trail ride tomorrow. The same Morgan that competed in a combined driving test yesterday can teach a beginner's lesson this afternoon. Morgans are naturally friendly horses, and their lively curiosity Our guest columnist this week is Barbara Dawson, president, Georgia Morgan Horse Club, 150 Mt. Calvary Rd., Marietta, Ga. 30064 (404)428-1 065. about almost anything, together with their intelligence and easy going personality, make them the perfect companion for the pleaseure rider. The Morgan averages about 15 hands, with some individuals topping 16 hands or more. Coat colors are primarily black, bay, chestnut and brown; however, more and more palominos and buckskins are being seen, as well as a few roans and greys. They are compact, sturdy horses with excellent legs and feet, and they usually are easy keepers. Morgans are appearing more often in disciplines not ordinarily thought of as their forte. For instance, a breeder in Pennsylvania uses her horses as reining mounts. Morgans are proving themselves to be an excellent choice for carriage driving, in the dressage arena, over fences, in endurance rides, and strutting proudly in the show ring. They are a good choice for junior riders, as they thrive on the attention and time that kids love to spend with their "first horse". Morgans also are the best choice for specialized purposes. A stable in Canada uses Morgans exclusively for its disabled rider program. A paraplegic in Connecticut regularly competes in combined driving events with his Morgan gelding. Closer to home, in Cedartown, the Murphy-Harpst-Vasti Children's Home has accumulated several good Morgans for use with the kids in its horseback therapy program. Widely scattered showers helped in some areas, but much more rain is needed. The com crog has been hurt the tnost, as the drought began at the critical silking and tasseling stage. Yields have been cut; pollination has been hindered; and some dryland corn has been lost completely. (Continued from page 16) Ga. Farmers' Markets Abound With Fresh Seasonal Produce The Georgia Department of Agriculture's state farmers' markets are brimming with fresh, quality produce, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Favorable weather conditions have resulted in plentiful yields of fruits and vegetables this year," said Irvin. "While Georgia is read- ily known for peaches, watermelons and Vidalia onions, our farmers also produce a variety of commodities which are readily available at our Department's farmers' markets located throughout the state." Georgia has six major state farmers' markets located in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Savannah, and Thomasville. Seasonal market facilities also are located in Albany, Athens, Blue Ridge, Cairo, Cordele, Donalsonville, Glennville, Moultrie, Pelham, Tifton and Valdosta. Georgia commodities now in season and featured at many of these markets include bell peppers, cantaloupes, cucumbers, eggplant, field peas, hot peppers, butterbeans, okra, snapbeans, squash, sweet corn, tomatoes, watermelons and zucchini. Horse Owners from Theft Reported horse thefts in Georgia have declined in recent years, largely due to the efforts of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Equine Health section, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. However infrequently it occurs, the loss of a prized horse is very upsetting to its owner, who often wonders what can be done to prevent the horse from being sold at auction. According to Irvin, it is very unlikely that a horse stolen in Geor- gia will be sold at a sale barn within the state. Once the department is notified, the word is passed immediately to inspectors at all state sales facilities. With a complete description of the missing horse and familiarity with the types of animals that pass through a given sale barn, the inspectors can quickly identify any horse that seems out of place. "As the regulatory policies of our department have become more effective over the years, most horse thieves have learned that they can't do business in Georgia," Irvin said, "although some still try." However, he added, some learn more slowly than others. Irvin recalled a case that occurred within the last year, in which horses stolen in north Georgia one morning and were taken to a sale that same afternoon. (Continued from page 16) Georgia peaches invaded New York last week when Peach Commission Chairman Al Pearson (left) and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin (right) planted a peach tree in Central Park, then hosted 35 food editors and writers to a peach-laden lunch at Tavern On The Green restaurant. Assisting with the planting was "Georgia Peach," Brenda Boozer, a singing star of the Metropolitan Opera, who is a native of Atlanta. EPA Exempts Permethrin For Use On Southern Peas The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin's request for a specific exemption for emergency use of the insecticide permethrin to control cowpea curculio in southern peas. "This conies as good news to our southern pea growers who would be unable to produce a marketable crop without the use of this chemical," said Irvin. "Producers have been using acephate as an interim control measure for cowpea curculio, but without permethrin, which has undergone extensive field testing, our farmers would have faced losses exceeding $5 million." Cowpea curculio is the most destructive insect of southern peas. During their egg-laying activity and the subsequent larvae development, the weevils damage both the pod and developing seed of southern peas, making them unfit for human consumption. Irvin cautioned pea growers to observe all label requirements for use of the pesticide products AMBUSH and POUNCE, which contain permethrin. These include application or supervision by a certified pesticide applicator, grazing and crop rotation considerations and a five day preharvest interval.
