MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN, COMMISSIONER Vol. 77, No. 23 Farriers Benefit Equine Industry The Georgia Professional Farriers Association was formed 11 years ago by several interested farriers (horseshoers) to promote a better understanding of our profession and to establish uniform skill standards for our members. Two years later our organization joined the American Farriers Association which supports a certification program and provides a contin- Our guest columnist this week is Wayne J. Through our affiliation with the AFA, we also belong to the World Farrier Association. Our total membership, which is made up of regular and associate members, has surpassed 135. Membership, certification and participation is voluntary. Although certification is not required for membership, it is strongly supported. An applicant has two years to become certified before lapsing into associate member status. The GPFA is recognized throughout the country, and according to the AFA office, Georgia has more certified members than any other chapter. There currently are 40 chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada. Our association meets four times a year at various locations around the state, and we sponsor a large contest and clinic each fall. Farriers pay to attend our clinics or workshops, but other interested persons are admitted free. These sessions provide Georgia farriers an opportunity to hear, watch and work with world class competitors, farriers and the presidents of the various U.S. and European farrier organizations. The GPFA does not test or certify farriers; this is done through the AFA. Some schools of horsehoeing, instructors, etc., may give diplomas or titles to their graduates, but neither our organization nor the AFA recognizes them. The AFA tests and certifies farriers at one of three levels: interr (continued on page 16) Wednesday, June 20, 1990 Bulletin Now Printed on Recycled Newsprint Old Bessie has never been more popular or productive than she is today. The average milk production per cow in Georgia for 1989 was 12,178 pounds, an increase of 303 pounds over 1988. All that work, as well as the publicity surrounding National Dairy Month, seems to have left this bovine feeling pretty content. The Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin, published weekly by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, is now printed exclusively on recycled newsprint, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Besides the positive environmental impact recycled newsprint offers, it is competitive in price to ordinary newsprint and those in the printing business say it actually provides a whiter and brighter product," said Irvin. "With over 800 tons of newsprint used to produce the Bulletin each year, we feel that this represents a significant effort to conserve our state's natural resources, particularly since we lead the nation in pulp production." Decatur News Publishing Co. of Decatur, the current publisher of the Market Bulletin, purchases the recycled newsprint from Southeast Special Handicrafts Edition Special Handicrafts ..............page 14 Georgia Cooking .....................page 5 Bulletin Calendar.................page 15 Georgia Dairy Farmers Both Productive and Efficient June 1990 marks the 54th observance of Dairy Month across the U.S., an opportune time to salute Georgia's dairy farm families and recognize the important role they play in the production of milk and milk products. Here in Georgia, we have much to celebrate. In 1988, Georgia ranked 27th nationally in milk production with 1.24 billion pounds, an increase of 6 percent. While the average number of milk cows rose 5 percent to 104,000 head, the number of dairy farmers dropped to 633. This re- flects a trend toward fewer farms with larger, more efficient operations. Dodson Dairies, owned and oper- ated by Bill and Ray Dodson of Eatonton, is an excellent example of a typical Georgia dairy farm. Bill, who has a degree in history and political science, is a successful dairy farmer. However, he comes by his "cow sense" naturally. "I didn't get a lick of Dairy Science in college," said Dodson. Bill's father Ray started the dairy operation 22 years ago with a herd of 90 cows, and Bill grew up learn- ing the business. Today, Bill and his father milk about 150 cows as well as double crop 100 acres of sorghum for silage. The tour was sponsored by the Georgia Peach Commission as part of its promotion campaign for 1990. Paper Manufacturing Co. The Dublin, Georgia, firm is the largest and most technologically advanced paper recycling plant in the nation. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia has more mills capable of handling recycled pulp than any other state in the nation. This contributes to the fact that the state recycles nearly half of its old newspapers, a distinction which places Georgia ahead of all but four states. When Market Bulletin subscribers finish reading their papers, they can continue recycling efforts since recycled newsprint can be salvaged for further processing. Unfortunately, many people who enjoy making crafts for fun on a part-time basis are often unsuccessful in turning their hobby into a money-making business. Everyone has heard the old adage that if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. This one is absolutely (continued on page 13) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 20,1990 we Dear Editor. If your gold chain has a knot in it, dust it with a little talcum powder, then try to undo it. If this fails, place a drop of baby oil on a sheet of wa*x paper. Lay the knot in the oil and work it loose with two pins. Clean the chain afterwards with ammonia or warm, sudsy water. If the pull tab on a zipper comes off, attach a small paper clip in its place. Wind thread or fine yarn around the clip to match the garment. Please Include your complete name and address on all correspondence and notices submitted to the MARKET BUL LETIN.
