MARKET BTJLLETIIM GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER Vol. 77, No. 22 Organic Growers Promote Best of Past and Future We are at a point in history which will be recorded as a time that agriculture went back to its roots and reclaimed some of the proven wisdom and common-sense practices of those who farmed the land in the generations before us. We've had a few whirlwind decades of heavy courtship with synthetics and chemicals and found many ben efits in using them. However, we Our guest columnist this week is Honey J. Rubin, information coordinator and cofounder of the Georgia Organic Growers Association, P.O. Box 567661, Atlanta, GA 30356._____________________ also found that some of the prac tices we adopted have not main tained the integrity of our soil and water supplies. We realized that we must take care of our resources if they are going to take care of us. Now in this historic moment we are re-evaluating the use of synthe tics...to determine how we can take the best of modern technology and graft it to the wisdom of the past. Current agricultural systems which rely on synthetics and chemi cals primarily focus on output and invest attention on the symptoms or short term rewards of successful farming. These systems seek quick, high crop yields, sometimes at the expense of the soil, water or farm workers. Narrow in focus, chemical systems may create food that looks good or seems somewhat cheaper to produce, but which also may have questionable levels of residues. Agricultural practices which uti lize low-input, sustainable, Inte grated Pest Management (IPM) or organic systems, focus on the longterm causes of successful farming. One of these broadly balanced causes lies in creating and sustain ing healthy resources such as soil integrity. These farming techniques can be placed under the large um brella of 'sustainable agriculture,' sharing one common goal -- to provide a wholesome, safe and af fordable food supply while protect ing our environment and preserving and conserving our natural re sources. We are learning to keep our agricultural systems viable in a way that leaves our resources in a (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, June 13,1990 Agriculture Experiment Stations Prepare Georgia Farmers To Enter 21st Century Eow Improve As of early sJtiiie, condi tion ratings of the :s|ate's;? row crops were up from pre vious reports, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service, and scat tered showers boosted crop prospects in the formerly dry areas of southeast Geor gia. Wheat harvest continued at a near-norma} pace; yields and; test weights were better than predicted ear lier. . - .' - -.,. : ..-.-': .-.....;: : :.-:' Cotton ; pljanting ; was ahead of iiormal, aiWj jettdi"-. tion ratings were up sharply from earlier reports. Soybean seedings were ahead of last year but be hind the five year average. Corn, peanut and tobacco condition ratings all were above the previous forecast. Peanut planting was near completion, and develop ment was ahead of normal. Watermelons were re ported in good condition with harvest expected to begin around mid-June. Picture it. It's 2010, and a farmer is preparing to plant his crops. He goes to his personal computer, types in a few commands, and automated equipment begins to select and plant genetically-engineered, pestresistant seedlings into the ground at a rate of 60 plants per minute. While this scene seems far fetched and difficult to even imag ine for most, researchers at Geor gia's College of Agriculture Experi ment Stations have taken steps in this direction in the name of agri cultural engineering. The use of "robotics, machine vision and artifi cial intelligence" to automate plant tissue culture production systems is just one of the main thrusts of the stations' research programs. Since their establishment in the late 1800s following the passage of the federal Hatch Act providing funding for agricultural research, the Georgia Experiment Stations' programs have grown from simple fertilizer experiments to a vast net work of research divisions encom passing agriculture economics and engineering, agronomy, entomol ogy, food science and technology, horticulture and plant pathology. The stations, which are operating under the University of Georgia -- one of the state's Land Grant Uni versities -- are located in Athens, Griffin and Tifton, with branch sta- tions in Calhoun, Blairsville, Eatonton, Midville and Plains. Many of the stations' research projects have contributed signifi cantly to agribusiness, and future research at the facilities is expected to have an even greater impact on the agricultural industry as scien tists continue to search for solutions to problems that concern farmers, commercial growers, the food indus try and consumers. "As we enter the next century, agriculture's effect on the environ ment and the safety of food will continue to be major concerns of the public," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, "and we're going to have to be a step ahead of these concerns with crea tive solutions to problems, backed by sound research." Irvin and U.S. Sen. Wyche Fow ler (D-Ga.) toured two of the state's experiment stations June 1 for a glimpse at research underway to address these concerns. According to Gerald Arkin, resident director at the Griffin station, these contem porary agricultural issues include low-input sustainable agriculture techniques -- which work with opti mum inputs to protect the land -- and safer food with the use of fewer pesticides. (Continued on page 12) U.S. Sen. Wyche Fowler and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin had the opportunity to view ongoing research during their recent tour of the Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton. Shown (1-r) are Commissioner Irvin; Philip R. Utley, head of the Coastal Plains Animal Science Department; Sen. Fowler; and Gale Buchanan, resident director, Coastal Plains Experiment Station. Program Promotes Georgia Commodities In an effort to expand markets for the state's produce industry, the Georgia Department of Agricul ture's Area Marketing Coordinators will venture beyond Georgia's bor ders to call on produce buyers repre senting major grocery store chains, according to Commissioner of Agri culture Tommy Irvin. "Our goal is to inform buyers that Georgia has both the quality and variety of commodities they need," said Irvin. "We feel that by meeting these buyers face to face, we can better inform them about the availability of the many varie ties of produce we have to offer, as well as answer any questions they might have." The promotional program began last week with a visit to Bir- (Continued on page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 13,1990 Farm employment If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Mia Haney 651-9082.
