Many landowners are not foresters and rely heavily on information supplied by the association to help make their tree growing business a success. Through the association, members learn not only about latest technological advances in forest management, but ways to enhance recreational and aesthetic values of their land through good stewardship and environmental responsiblity. Information is disseminated to the membership in a variety of ways. Forest Farmer magazine, published 10 times a year, has gained a national reputation for its accuracy and readability. The survey will be conducted June 1-15 by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, and the information will be used to make state, regional and national estimates of crop acreage, grain stocks, livestock inventories, number of farms and other statistics. The survey findings will go tto government policymakers and farm organizations, who use the survey results to help develop farm missioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. In recent years, tobacco companies, particularly those in foreign markets, have become increasingly concerned about chemical residues on any kind of U.S. tobacco. "Although Georgia growers have managed to keep their gold leaf free of chemicals illegal for use on tobacco," said Irvin, "buyers are still concerned about excessive residues of approved chemicals." While MH-30 is approved for use on tobacco, growers are charged with the responsibility of following label directions on the rate and timing of the pesticide. Failure to do so could not only result in high residues which could potentially reduce price and demand for their kets by alleviating any concern over chemical residues." Growers must use other alternatives for controlling suckers which reduce potential residue problems. For example, chemical residues can be avoided by applying MH-30 to the top leaves of the stalk only and by using contact sucker control chemicals. The Georgia Department of Agriculture will continue testing tobacco samples for illegal chemical residues through the growing and marketing season.
