FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol.77, No. 10 Department Coordinates Georgia Cattle Shipment For Puerto Rican Buyers As a result of a joint effort between the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Puerto Rican Department of Agriculture, over $50,000 worth of high quality, purebred cattle will be shipped to Puerto Rico in late March. For the third year in a row, Puerto Rican livestock producers have had the opportunity to improve their herds by purchasing superior Georgia cattle which has resulted in over $150,000 total additional sales for Georgia producers. In 1990, there were six first-time sellers and three repeat sellers, with three of the six breeds purchased for the first time. "This is an excellent opportunity for everyone involved in this transaction," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Not only does this give our producers access to new markets for their (Continued on page 16) Georgia Cattle Val ue average value of cattle in Georgia reached a record high in 1 989, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. The increase represents the greatest value per head for cattle since the Agricultural Statistics Service began keeping records in 1956. But in recent years, they have been barraged with alarming reports, ranging from Alar in apples to sulphamethazine in milk, which have eroded the public's confidence in food safety. This is the third in a series of articles addressing the safety of food supplies and how the Georgia Department of Agriculture is working daily to protect our consumers. TRUE PEANUT BUTTER LOVER: Gov. Joe Frank Harris holds up the "I'm a Peanut Butter Lover" T-shirt that was presented to him by the Georgia Peanut Commission during a ceremony at the State Capitol, commemorating peanut butter's 100th birthday and Baskin Robbing' 45th birthday. Pesticides have become a vital part of the production of food and fiber. Yet because of all the recent media attention on how they pose risks to our otherwise safe food supplies, pesticides have taken on a negative, rather than positive connotation. Consumers often have responded to these reports emotionally rather than rationally. Not only should consumers take the time to put these issues in ag consumer line... Q: I know that pistachio nuts are grown in the western United States and I would like to know if they can be grown successfully in the Southeast. If so, I would like some information on planting some trees in Georgia. A: Pistachia vera is the variety of pistachio plant from which edible nuts are harvested. It is often grated onto the Pistachia chinensis, or Chinese Pistache, which is grown in Florida as a shade tree, but not for the production of nuts. The Pistachia vera is grown in California, but not on the east coast, because it needs a warm, frost-free climate with low humidity. Our horticulturist does not believe the tree would do very well in Georgia. Georgia. **#* Q: I forced some hyacinth, daffodil and tulip bulbs to bloom earlier than usual by keeping them in a pot in the refrigerator for twelve weeks. Now I would like to plant them in the yard. When is the best time to do this? A: Spring-flowering bulbs such as these usually are planted in most parts of Georgia from October through late December. It is not recommended that you plant forced bulbs m your yard, since they usually do not grow and flower have PU r ^St reSUltS ' yU Shuld throw them out when they blooming and buy new ones for the yard. #### Q: Can you tell me how to remove smoke stains and the burnt smell from my stone fireplace? I have tried several cleaning products and nothing seems to work very well. A: Experts with the Georgia Extension Service recommend using one-fourth cup trisodium phosphate in one gallon of warm water or one cup dishwasher detergent in a gallon of very hot water to clean smoke stains from an indoor stone or brick fireplace. These surfaces may be cleaned with a large sponge or a stiff brush and should be rinsed thoroughly. The area surrounding the fireplace should be covered to prevent damage to the floor or carpet. Smoke stains may be removed from exterior brick, stone or concrete by scrubbing with a solution of one-half Ibs. trisodium phosphate in a gallon of water. Trisodium phosphate may be purchased at a hardware store. The Georgia Department of Agriculture was monitoring pesticide residues in food many years before pesticides and food safety became topics of concern to the public. "What consumers need to realize, is that although we cannot feasibly test every morsel of food they consume," noted Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, "we analyze samples representative of the many food products they eat." The department obtains fruit and (Continued on page 16) Georgians Prepare For Purple Martins Each Spring, many folks anxiously await the arrival of purple martins. Since one of these purpleblack birds can consume hundreds of insects a day, people are more than happy to have martins visit their property each year. The tradition of attracting purple martins dates back to the American Indians who discovered that the birds would readily accept gourds hung in their camps. Martins formerly nested in tree cavities; however, since much of their natural habitat has been destroyed, they have become dependent upon man to provide them with a nesting place. In the eastern United States, purple martins now breed almost exclusively in man-made housing. These birds spend the winter months in South America and arrive in southern Georgia in early February and reach northern Georgia by mid-March and April. In the early fall they begin their migration south. Martins tend to return to the same area to nest each year, while young birds or those who have lost their homes search for new quarters. This means that once a house or gourd is used, it will continue to be used, and new houses eventually will be occupied as first-year martins look for places to nest. Several types of shelters can be used to attract purple martins. Natural gourds, plastic jugs, and houses constructed of wood or aluminum are popular choices. When using natural gourds, make certain they are dried and (Continued on page 13) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, March 7,1990 Farm Services II | If you have questions regarding ads in I this category, call Michelle Coleman at j 656-3722. j The Market Bulletin publishes | advertisements for Farm Services | in the first issue of each month. Wednesday, March 7,1990 THE MARKET BULLETIN PageS we Editor's Note The Market Bulletin office received a number of letters expressing appreciation for the many cards and letters received by elderly and shut-in readers as a result of the December "Special People List." Although the Bulletin has been unable to publish all of these thank-you letters, the following one is a good example of the thoughtfulness of Market Bulletin readers long after the Christmas season. Dear Editor: I have been intending to write to you and tell you how much I appreciated all the cards my mother received because her name and address were listed in the "Special People" list. Mother died on January 5. Thank you for making her last month on this earth one of the happiest she and I ever experienced. She knew that many people loved her and for that I am truly appreciative. I realized that I should write to you when some school children sent her Valentine cards. Mother's name was Beatrice Lathem. She lived on Hopewell Road in Alpharetta.
