FARMERS & CONSUMERS Pommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin 01.76, No. 9 Wednesday, March 1, 1989 1989 Georgia Horse Census Underway Throughout State The equine industry continues to je one of the fastest growing segments of Georgia agriculture. For ;his reason, a census is underway to identify the number and types of lorses, ponies, donkeys and mules in the state. [1989 Georgia EQUINE CENSUS Census results will be used by local county extension offices to develop future mailing lists for educational information on equine related programs and publications and to build a mailing list for future surveys. All census responses will remain absolutely confidential. Only totals derived from the census results will be released and no information will go to any local or federal tax agency. Census forms have been distributed primarily through local extension offices. Whether you own just one pony in the backyard, or an entire breeding herd, please complete the survey and mail it to your local county extension office by the April 1 deadline. If you have not received a 1989 Equine Census, a copy is featured on page 12 of this week's Market Bulletin. These forms should be clipped out and returned to your lv>cal county extension office by April 1. Call the toll free "Ag Consumer Line" number at 1-800282-5852, if you are not sure of your county agent's address. The Georgia Equine Census is sponsored by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation and the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. For your Georgia Horse Census form, see page 12. Federal Crop Insurance Hearing Scheduled March 1 at Tifton RDC A national hearing is scheduled at the Rural Development Center auditorium in Tifton, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 7, to allow interested parties to comment on possible changes in the Federal Crop Insurance Program. "This meeting will allow farmers to have a voice in making sure that crop insurance provides the coverage they need to adequately protect them from crop disasters," said Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The hearing is one of several to be conducted by the National Commission for the Improvement of the Federal Crop Insurance during March and April. A number of informal fact-finding meetings will also be held at locations throughout the nation. Persons having questions con- cerning any phase of the commission's work should contact Kellye Eversole, executive director of the Commission for the Improvement of the Federal Crop Insurance Program, 1255 23rd St., N.W., Suite 880, Washington, D.C., 20037, 202887-6700 or telefax 202-887-0149. Farmers are reminded that March 31 is the deadline to sign up for Federal Crop Insurance for the 1989 crop year. Any farmers wishing to cancel existing policies must also meet this deadline. Grandpa's Garden Bulbs that come up early in the spring are usually hardy enough to withstand most of Old Man Winter's cold slings and icy arrows. The foliage is hardier than the flowers, however. Still, flowering bulbs have natural defense mechanisms that take care of them and can pretty much take whatever is dished at them as far as weather goes. Onion Marketing Order Approved A one-year interim federal marketing order for Vidalia onions has been approved by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter. Georgia's onion growers will have the opportunity to vote on the order in a referendum scheduled March 1-3, at the Toombs County Courthouse in Lyons. Producers can cast their ballots from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 12, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 3. If the order is approved by. a majority of growers, it could permit growers to finance promotion and research programs for their product, and would prohibit the sale of onions labeled "Vidalia" unless they are grown in the designated Vidalia onion region. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin urges all Vidalia onion growers to cast their ballots for the marketing order if they are interested in protecting the Vidalia name and enhancing the marketability of their product. ag consumer line... Q: I opened some canned mackerel the other day and it contained some foreign material. I saved the portion with the foreign material and threw the rest away. I also discarded the can, but saved the label. Enclosed is some of the fish and the foreign material. Can you tell me what it is? A: Unfortunately, your sample was too decomposed for testing. It is not a good idea to send something perishable, like mackerel, in the mail, because it will probably spoil and cannot be tested in the food lab. Also, we need to know where and when you bought this product and we need the code number, which is usually on the top or the bottom of the can and not on the label. Next time something like this happens, put perishable items in the refrigerator and call our toll-free number, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to report the problem to someone in our Consumer Protection office. For answers to problems, or ques tions, concerning products or serv ices regulated by the Georgia De partment of Agriculture, write Con sumer Services, Room 300 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334; or call tollfree, 1-800-282-5852, or 656-3645 in metro-Atlanta.
