FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 7 Wednesday, February 15, 1989 National FFA Week Designated Feb. 18-25 As most of you know, the FFA is the national organization for the students in agricultural education. The primary aim of the national FFA organization is the develop ment of agricultural leadership, cooperation and citizenship. The FFA pro vides today's young people with skills, val ues and opportun ities needed to face tomorrow's challenges. Today's FFA member has a host of career opportunities waiting for him or her. There are farmers, teachers, businessmen and Our guest columnist this week is Ray Mancil, president of the Georgia Association of the Future Farmers of America, 1766 Twin Towers East, Atlanta, 30334, 404656-4077. scientists who work in the agriculture industry. The FFA plays a major role in training young people to fill these positions. Basic skills used in farming and agribusiness are taught in high school agriculture classes. The student is then able to supplement what he has learned in the class by participating in FFA contests and by starting a Supervised Agricultural Experience program (SAE). The student's SAE program is a hands-on agricultural project. The contests and the projects provide needed experience. They also make agriculture fun. The FFA teaches values that our country has believed in for generations. A student in agricultural education is no stranger to hard work and its rewards. Through a special FFA program called Building Our American Communities (BOAC), a member learns to appreciate his local community and to take an active role in improving things. Our organization also believes in patriotism among our young people. Before we close any meeting we recite the Pledge of Allegiance and at the top of our emblem is the bald eagle. Young people who take part in FFA activities have a wide range of opportunities awaiting them. Irvin was commended for the hard work and dedication he has given to agriculture and to the poultry industry. Georgia Peach and ^gg Commissions Reaffirmation Referendums Planned Georgia egg and peach producers soon will be receiving ballots to vote on continuation of the Georgia Egg Commission and the Georgia Peach Commission for another three years. The 30-day balloting period begins today and continues through midnight, March 16. The 1969 Georgia Agricultural Promotion Act stipulates that Georgia's commodity commissions be reaffirmed by producer vote every three years. A favorable vote of 66&2/S percent from the producers voting must be received in order to continue the commissions and their programs of research, education and promotion. Ballots will be counted by the Georgia Department of Agri- culture and results released in late March. ' Referendum ballots were mailed last week. Any eligible egg or peach producer who did not receive a ballot may contact the Georgia De- partment of Agriculture, 328 Agri- culture Building, Atlanta, 30334, or call 404-656-3678. Georgia's Arbor Day To Be Celebrated Feb. 17 Six Georgia towns and cities have been given the Tree City USA certification by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Hinesville, Metter, Thomaston, Albany, Clarkesville and Duluth join 11 other municipalities in receiving the certification. The certifications are in conjunction with Georgia's observance of Arbor Day. Each year, Georgia observes the third Friday of February as its official day to plant trees. This year, Arbor Day is Feb. 17. To become tree cities, communities must meet four standards: organize a legally constituted tree board or department; pass a community tree ordinance; implement a comprehensive forestry program; and, have a public tree-planting (Continued on page 16) !^ ^^^Kl^^l^3^*8 *"^^'* 1 ^' Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, February 15,1989 Farm employment // you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Mia Haney 651-9082. PINEAPPLE BAVARIAN 1 envelope plain gelatin 1/2 cup sugar, divided 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 eggs, separated g 1 & 1/4 cups 2 percent lowfat milk g 1 teaspoon orange extract one 20-ounce can crushed pineapple, well drained 1/2 pint whipping cream, whipped g In 1 & 1/2-quart bowl, combine gelatin and 1/4 cup sugar and salt. In 2-cup measure, beat together egg yolks and milk until well blended. Stir into dry ingredients, thoroughly blend. Cook on 50 percent (medium) power in microwave oven, 6 minutes, stirring twice. Remove from oven and stir in orange extract. Chill in refrigerator until consistency of raw egg white, about 30-40 minutes. Meanwhile, in large mixer bowl, beat egg whites (at room temperature) until foamy. Gradually add remaining 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff peaks form. When custard has reached proper consistency, stir well-drained pineapple into custard. Fold custard into egg whites. Fold whipped cream into mixture. Spoon into individual parfait or custard cups. Cover, chill until set. Garnish with pineapple wedges before serving. Yield: 12 half-cup servings.
