FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Comm/ss/oner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 75, No. 48 Paul WttMeM Foundation Promotes Turfgrass Industry Our organization is pleased to cosponsor the 20th Georgia Turfgrass Conference & Trade Show with the Georgia Golf Course Superintendent's Association and the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service. This event will be held December 11-13, 1989 at the Georgia International Convention & Trade Center and the adjoining Hyatt Airport Hotel. Georgia's turfgrass industry is one of the fastest growing segments of this state's economy. This industry includes not only residential Our guest columnist this week is Paul C. Massey, president, Georgia Turfgrass Foundation, Inc., 4565 S. GTF has funded specific research projects with $6,000 in 1988 and $11,400 in 1989. The Foundation also sponsors publication of the University of Georgia's annual update of the Turfgrass Pest Control Recommendations For Professionals which is distributed to GRF members and the industry's professionals in Georgia. The Georgia Turfgrass Conference & Trade Show has grown tremendously. The first conferences were held at UGA's Continuing Education Center and were called "Short Courses." These courses were jointly sponsored by the Georgia Golf Course Superintendent's Association and The University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service. Individuals who organized the very first meetings included George Kozelnicky, Charlie Underwood and Dr. Frank Pokorny. The meetings served as a means of informing the state's turf professionals that turfgrass re- (Continued on Page 6) Wednesday, Decembers, 1989 Newly-Released Pecan Variety Has Good Shelling Quality The Oconee pecan, a cross-breed of the Schley and Barton varieties, has been released to commercial nurseries by USDA. The new variety is said to have excellent shelling qualities, large nut size and good flavor. The percentage of kernel of the Oconee is 56 percent, according to Ray Worley, horticulturist at the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station. Other pecans widely grown in the Southeast have higher kernel percentage and thinnner shells, which can cause cracking problems. By contrast, when the Oconee is cracked, the shell falls off, leaving more complete halves of pecan meat, Worley said. In ten years of research at the Tifton site, the Oconee has produced up to 123 pounds of pecans per tree, higher than other top-yielding varieties, such as Cheyenne and Desirable. In 1988, Oconee produced 1,424 pounds per acre. Trees for planting currently are available through USDA's Agricultural Research Service branch in College Station, Texas. New Zealand Product Presentation Promotes Southeastern Food Items In an effort to boost southeastern agricultural exports, the Southern United States Trade Association is sponsoring a product presentation to F.W. Woolworth stores in New Zealand, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The Woolworth's stores, which carry a variety of foods, would like to expand their line of American products. Woolworth's currently is one of the leading retail groups in New Zealand. Lanny Williams, director of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's International Trade Division, will make the product presentation, which represents food items from more than 60 firms in the southeastern United States. Executives from Woolworth's will have the opportunity to actually sample from the wide variety of products ranging from fresh nuts to frozen foods. Woolworth's and SUSTA will make the decision on whether or not to organize a U.S. product promotion in the stores based on the success of the presentation. "We often take for granted the diverse food products available to us here in the Southeast," said Irvin. "We want to introduce our quality products to this major New Zealand retail chain and encourage them to buy some of these value-added agricultural commodities." The following six Georgia companies will have their products included in the presentation: Murray Biscuit Co., Augusta; The Mayhaw Tree, Colquitt; Helen's Tropical Exotics, Clarkston; Fine Products and Royal Oak Enterprises, Atlanta; and D.E. Holmes Trading Co. of Garden City. More than 7,500 acres of cabbage are produced in Georgia each year, with much of the acreage concentrated in Colquitt County. This beautiful cabbage crop is being grown by Ray Dean Hart of Colquitt County. Horses, mules, ponies for sate All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. Any falsification of coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions. In addition, all horse farmers must have had animals in their possession 60 days or more before offering them for sale through this publication. 12 yr. Turfgross Industry (Continued from Page 1) search was being conducted at the University of Geor gia. These early courses brought in experts from around the country to talk about new techniques and methods to efficiently grow and maintain turfgrass -- a valuable source of educa tion. Since 1982 the conference has been directed by Dr. Gil Landry, UGA Extension agronomist -- turf special ist, who continues to serve as 1989 conference chair man. In 1984 the trade show was initiated with 25 exhibits. The 1989 trade show has 167 exhibits and will be a focal point of the conference. This year's ex hibits will feature equip ment, accessories and even computer programs for the industry. Concurrent educational workshops were added in 1984 to provide in-depth study of specific topics. Workshops for the 1989 con ference include: Pesticide License Training, Introduc tory Turfgrass Manage ment, Pesticide Manage ment in Compliance with the Law, Turfgrass Irriga tion, and Landscape and the Golf Course. Conference registration opens at 8 a.m., Monday, December 11, at the Geor gia International Conven tion & Trade Center. For further information, call (404) 447-4985.
