FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/'n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 4 . Eugene Agribusiness Council Strong in Georgia Agribusiness is a term hard to define and it is often misunder stood, even by those of us in agribu siness. Yet as confusing as we often make it, it describes the biggest business in Geor gia. Most people think of agricul ture as only that function that hap pens on the farm or behind the farm gate. How ever, agriculture in its broadest sense is far more than just what happens on the farm. It includes all components of our food and fiber system from the seed being planted in the soil to the consumer in the supermarket. Sure, that encompas ses all that happens behind the farm gate. That is the fundamental Our guest columnist this week is J. Eugene Sutherland, president of the Geor gia Agribusiness Council, Room 340, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, At lanta, 30334, 404-656-3698. part of our food and fiber system. But, it also includes all those func tions dealing with food and fiber after the products leave the farm. These functions have become known by the word agribusiness. The Georgia Agribusiness Coun cil was founded for promoting the importance of Georgia's agricultur ally related business community. It has become one of the state's most active agricultural organizations in volved in virtually every dimension of Georgia's comprehensive and im portant agribusiness activity. Ap proximately half of these are in volved in the supply side of agribu siness, including firms that provide products and services that farmers must obtain. Such firms include dealers and distributors of plant foods, pesticides, seed, farm equip ment, and other materials and equipment used in the production of food and fiber. Also included in this supply side membership are finan cial institutions, farm consultants, insurance firms and utilities. The other half of the Georgia Agribusiness Council membership is composed of firms involved in the (Continued on page 15) Wednesday, January 25, 1989 Winterville Carriage Shop Offers Rides With History es: =?!*: s - - -'-'- - -'- ---- --- " -- ::: **'' '-] K I \.': tfVV-Xttf.-ff&r - - W.-:-f.-:-:* i*:*: Bob Welliver looks over part of an Irish "governess cart" he is restoring in one of his workshops. The wicker cart was usually used by a female in the household, like a governess, and was built so that the high wicker "basket" of the cart would help groceries or small children keep their balance. It's not like Bob Welliver to eavesdrop while driving someone in one of his vintage carriages or wag ons. But he couldn't resist repeating a line he once overheard from an old timer who had taken a ride. "He said it (the carriage ride) was 'better'n a dose of medicine,' " said Welliver smiling. "And I agree. Society is missing something. Ev eryone needs to slow down to car riage pace." Despite leading a busy life, Wel liver takes his own advice as often as possible. He and his wife Brenda own and operate Welliver's Car riage Shop, located in Winterville, near Athens. They also operate a 50,000-broiler operation for GoldKist, and Welliver works as an administrator in the marine science department at the University of Georgia. Welliver has been in the carriage shop business for about five years, but his fascination with horsedrawn conveyances dates back to his childhood. "I was raised with them (wag ons)," said Welliver, who grew up in Pennsylvania near the Amish com munity. The Amish do not use mod ern-day conveniences like the auto mobile and tractor, for the most part, using instead real horse power with carriages and wagons. "I had that influence in my life all along," added Welliver. Despite his lifelong love for car riages and wagons, Welliver said he never even owned a horse until seven years ago, when he purchased a mare and cart for his kids. "And boy, it went from there," he chuc kled. Welliver's carriage shop restores antique conveyances, and builds them from scratch. His workshop has lodged quite an assortment over the years, including goat carts, dog carts, horse carts, sleighs, coaches, carriages, buggies and wagons. In addition, the shop furnishes drivers, teams and conveyances for almost any occasion -- from wed dings to hayrides -- and offers driv ing instructions. Welliver's Car riage , Shop is a member of the Carriage Association of America, and Welliver teaches driving at UGA's Center for Continuing Edu cation. He also finds time to enter regional, national and international (Continued on page 16) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, January 25, 1989 If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Mia Haney 651-9082. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. Any falsification of coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also ap plies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions. Test Age Changes For Some Cattle Cattle under 18 months of age are no longer re quired to be tested at Geor gia livestock markets. Pre viously, only cattle less than 12 months were ex empted from testing. The only exceptions to the new rule are steers or under-age vaccinated heif ers: beef (less than 24 months); and dairy (less than 20 months). The 18 month testing age of cattle will be determined by the animal's loss of its first pair of temporary inci sor teeth. The change in testing age was necessary due to a large cutback in the federal monies desig nated for the first point of concentration testing. :::;::::; .:;>;-:- :-;-.:X-:::: :>** *: : W i': :*.::: ":-:>.;. :.::-: iflllil If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Ella Beach 651-9084.
