FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 38 Wotfkau Wiuie Westville Provides Journey to the Past You may not know that there is a genuine, honest-to-goodness time machine right here in Georgia. If not, then you'll be particularly surprised to find out that this machine has been making trips almost everyday for the last twenty years, back in time to the year 1850 A.D. About three quarters of a million people from around the world have been able to "glimpse the forgotten dreams" of rural antebellum Georgia. What I'm referring to, of course, is Westville Village near Lumpkin. Our guest columnist this week is Matthew M. Moye, executive director, Westviile Village, P.O. Box 1850, Lumpkin, GA 31815.____________________ Westville is a 67-acre, researchbased, educational museum. When a time voyager steps through Westville's "gates to the past," he enters a typical 1850 West Georgia village, complete with homes, gardens, dirt roads, churches, fields, a courthouse, a cotton gin, and citizens. As the voyager walks about the community, he may feel a little uneasy at first, since all the conveniences of the last 140 years are noticeably absent. After a while, though, the voyager begins to forget himself as he talks with the friendly citizens of this bygone culture. These are a people whose lives have been only barely affected by the Industrial Revolution and who know nothing of the Age of Information or the Nuclear Age. A potter molds clay into a pot on a treadle wheel leg power. A quilter puts in eight stitches to the inch finger power. A blacksmith pumps a large, overhead bellows to fire up his forge arm and coal power. A cook rakes glowing embers under her dutch oven wood power. A farmer plows mule power. These and other citizens employ daily the handskills that we of the late twentieth century have largely forgotten. The voyager begins both to appreciate and question progress. The voyager also discovers -how much the seasons affect the Westvillians' lives. For example, time voyagers between October 25 and (continued on page 12) Wednesday, September 27,1989 Farm Front Florida Ag Department Quarantines Dogwoods Because of concern over the newly reported dogwood tree disease, anthracnose (Discula), the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services recently enacted a quarantine against dogwood trees from Georgia and 15 other states. The quarantine, which became effective September 18, 1989, was enacted due to fears that the disease might be carried into Florida on dogwoods from states which may harbor the disease. Nurserymen wanting to ship dogwoods to markets in Florida must now enter a compliance agreement with the Georgia Department of Agriculture to ensure that (Continued on page 12) Senate Ag Committee Approves Bill To Establish Pecan Checkoff Program The Senate Agriculture Committee has approved legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Wyche Fowler, Jr., establishing a national program of promotion and research for the pecan industry. The legislation is designed to strengthen the position of the pecan industry in the marketplace and to maintain and strengthen foreign and domestic markets. It also provides research to develop and promote additional uses for pecan products. In order to get the bill passed in time for the next growing season, it has been attached to the Committee on Agriculture's Budget Package. The package also includes an amendment to the Vidalia Onion Marketing Order which stipulates that only onions grown in a specified 19-county area may be called Vidalia onions. The full Senate is expected to vote on the package before the end of September. The House of Representatives has already approved an Agriculture Budget Package. Cotton Farmers Encouraged To Destroy Stalks Early Proper and timely destruction of cotton stalks is essential to the success of the current Boll Weevil Eradication Program in Georgia. To encourage early stalk destruction and thus prevent over-wintering of weevils in the state's cotton fields, the Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation has authorized credits for early destruction of cotton stalks in the Eradication Zone for Fall 1989. Farmers may apply the credits to their 1990 assessments for the Boll Weevil Program. Credits and deadlines for stalk destruction are listed as follows: Destruction ag consumer line... Deadline Credits Sept. 30 Oct. 16 Nov. 6 $7/acre $5/acre $3/acre (Continued on page 12) Q: I raise yellow crookneck squash to sell and for the past two years, they have been turning a greenish color or getting stripes on them. Someone told me that this condition is caused by a plant virus that is spread by aphids. Is this true? If so, what can be done about it? A: According to plant pathologists with the Georgia Extension Service, about 98% of all mosaic found in squash grown in Georgia is caused by the watermelon mosaic virus. This disease is introduced into the plant by aphids. There is a true squash mosaic virus, which is usually present in the seeds, but it is rarely found in Georgia. It is recommended that you plant squash away from watermelons, gourds or pumpkins and keep weeds and insects under control. It is also helpful to plant early, because there are less insects present early in the season. You can use Malathion to control the aphids. Be sure to read and follow all label directions carefully. Q: When my local grocery store has ground beef on sale for 99 cents a pound, there is always a sticker on the label that says "70/30." What does this mean? A: It means that the product contains 70 percent beef and 30 percent fat. Symposium Highlights Japan Trade Possibilities Concerns, and issues related to Japanese agricultural trade will be the focus of a symposium planned for Oct. 30 - Nov. 1 at the Rural Development Center in Tifton. The symposium, titled "Southeastern Agricultural Marketing in Japan: Current and Future Opportunities," is being coordinated by Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) and the Japan-America Society of Georgia. Designed for those who have current or potential trade opportunities with the Japanese, the symposium will feature sessions on Japanese business practices, agricultural trends, trade opportunities, and overall agribusiness forecasting. A highlight of the conference will be concurrent workshops on how commodities produced in the southeastern U.S. can be marketed more effectively in Japan.
