FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvm, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin *Jo\. 76, No. 35 Wednesday, Septembers, 1989 Vidalia Onions Growers Reminded To Vote in Referendum Nurserymen Urged to Check Benlate For Possible Herbicide Contamination Georgia Vidalia onion producers vill vote in a referendum, Septem>er 13-15, to decide whether to :ontinue the interim marketing xrder they approved last March. Balloting will be held at the roombs County Courthouse from 9 i.m. to 5 p.m. on each of the three lays. In order to vote in the referendum, growers must have produced Vidalia onions between July 31, 1988, and August 17, 1989, in the designated 19-county growing area. If a majority of Vidalia onion producers approve the referendum, funds collected through grower assessments can continue to be used to conduct research and promotion for the crop. "I support the continuation of the marketing order and urge all Vidalia onion growers to cast their vote," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "I think our Vidalia onion farmers are headed in the right direction in making the commitment to further protect and promote one of Georgia's most unique commodities." Fall is in the air and that means it's apple-picking time in Georgia. According to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service, harvest was about 30 percent complete by the end of August with the crop rated fair to good at that time. Consumers who would like to pick their own apples can do so at one of several orchards throughout the state. For a list of these and other pick-your-own operations, see page 6. Georgia nurserymen are advised to check their supplies of the fungicide Benlate 50-DF for specific lot numbers which might indicate that the product is contaminated with a herbicide, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. E.I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company, manufacturer of Benlate, has reported that a small portion of their 1989 Benlate DF production contains a low level of the herbicide atrazine. The herbicide, while present in extremely low levels, can potentially damage sensitive ornamental crops. According to Du Pont, the contaminated product was distributed only in two-pound packages. "With the production of fall bedding plants underway, our primary concern is that Georgia nurserymen, in an effort to protect their nursery crops from fungal diseases, might use some of this contaminated product and damage or destroy them," said Irvin. "I understand that the Benlate DF in question has caused damage when young seedlings with tender root systems have been drenched with the product." Benlate is used on a wide variety of ornamental and food crops. Consumers are warned to check their stocks of Benlate-DF in two pound packages for the following lot numbers which can be found on a white sticker on the bottom of each box: 1206880-091 1206880-092 1206880-093 1206880-094 1207880-095 1207880-096 1207880-097 1207880-098 1208880-099 1208880-100 1208880-101 1208880-102 1208880-103 1208880-104 1209880-105 1209880-106 1209880-107 1209880-108 1209880-109 1210880-110 1210880-111 1210880-112 1210880-113 1210880-114 1212880-115 1212880-120 0119890-275 Packages identified with any of these lot numbers should not be used and should be returned to the supplier. Georgia Specialty Firms Profit From Participation in Food Show Fourteen Georgia specialty food firms will realize an additional $524,385 in product sales as a result of participating in the 35th International Fancy Food and Confection Show, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The Department recruited the 14 Georgia specialty food firms and assisted them in preparing for the annual food show, one of the largest in the world. The event took place at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, June 25-28, 1989. In return, the companies agreed to provide the department with confidential information on their sales from the show and their anticipated sales for the next six months as a result of the show. Although individual company's sales figures were not released, one first-time participant reported signing a $250,000 contract during the show. This is the largest order ever reported by a Georgia specialty food firm at the annual event. The Seckinger-Lee Company, an Atlanta-based specialty food firm, won two awards for its gourmet food products at the show. The company's cheese biscuits received recognition in the hors d'oeuvres or snack food category, and its pecan biscuits won in the outstanding dessert category. The Georgia firm was the only company among the 820 exhibitors to have winning entries in two categories. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said, "Georgia's specialty food industry is showing dynamic growth from year to year. Sales reports like these confirm the excellent reputation our gourmet and specialty food products have earned for quality, taste and attractive representation." More information about the state's specialty food industry may be obtained by writing the Georgia Specialty Food and wine Association, Post Office Box 38196, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. ag consumer line... Q: I have a jade plant that is about a year old and a friend told me that it will bloom when it gets older. Is he right about this? A: Jade plants will bloom when they are mature usually about ten years old. They must have naturally decreasing amounts of daylight, which occurs in the fall and early winter months, and they should be kept in a room where artificial lights are not used at night. The plant will bloom in late fall or early winter if the above conditions are met and it was cared for properly. The succulent shrub will become covered with clusters of small, star-shaped, pinkish-white flowers that are unscented. The flowering period lasts about 3-4 weeks. Editor's Note: Due to tremendous growth in North Georgia, there is a shortage of available telephone num- bers in the 404 area code. Southern Bell is making some changes in the way you dial long-distance calls within that area to meet the growing demand for new numbers. Beginning October 1, 1989, it will be necessary to include the area code on every long-distance call you dial. Currently, a long-distance call within the 404 area can be made by dialing "0" or "1" plus the telephone number. When the dialing change becomes effective, you will have to dial "0" or "1" plus the 10- digit telephone number to complete all long-distance calls. For example, a caller in Metro Atlanta will no longer dial Rome, Georgia with a "0" or "1" plus 123 + 1234. The cus- tomer will have to dial "0" or "1" plus 404 + 123 + 1234. Customers in the 912 area code are encouraged to use the "0" or "1" plus 10-digit dialing plan also, but the present dialing plan will continue to be allowed there. Ten-digit dialing may become mandatory at a later date in the 912 area. Please keep these changes in mind when responding to ads in the Market Bulletin. 2 horse wagon, seat, extra wide bodies, wide wheels, exc. shape, ready to use.
