FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 34 Wednesday, August 30, 1989 Wildlife Technology Rewarding Career Wildlife Technology is defined as the study, use and development of techniques applicable to modern wildlife conservation/management programs. Abraham Baldwin Agri- cultural College, located in Tifton, Georgia, offers the largest (and best) of six accred?; ited Wildlife Technology programs in the United States. The program prepares graduates for entry into the wildlife profession as wildlide technicians. These individuals perform a variety of tasks, from habitat management to maximize wildlife populations to the collection of research data to better conserve wildlife resources. Our guest columnist this week is Dick Payne, associate professor of Wildlife, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, P.O. Box 8, ABAC Station, Tifton, Georgia 31794-2693. The discipline is a two-year program, involving core-curriculum studies in addition to classes designed to provide the student with hands-on experiences. In the latter regard, students are exposed to an intense field-oriented program during the summer quarter. Activities include instruction during field trips to all of Georgia's physiographic regions, with emphasis on the diversity of habitat types, wildlife species present, and associated management procedures. During these trips, students participate in a variety of wildlife management practices conducted under the supervision of Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Management personnel. The wildlife profession is a highly competitive field, requiring a student's best effort. Although positions are limited, ABAC W7ildlife Technology graduates ultimately are successful in obtaining permanent employment if they possess basic necessary traits/motivation as follows: (1) associate degree in Wildlife Technology; (2) respectable academic record; (3) proper attitude (willingness to give 100 percent); and (4) availability to work temporary wildlife employment to gain valuable experience for 12-24 months after graduation. (Continued on page 5) Producers Named to Fill Vacancies On Egg and Tobacco Commissions .^e* ops Two producers have been appointed by Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission ex-officio members to fill vacancies on the boards of the Georgia Egg and Tobacco Commodity Commissions. Vince Booker of Flowery Branch has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Georgia Egg Commission Board created by the resignation of Emerson Gay. Booker, nominated by the Georgia Egg Association, will serve until his term expires in April 1991. Wayne County farmer Neil Nichols has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Georgia Tobacco Commission Board created by the resignation of Terry Thomas. Nichols was nominated for the position by tobacco producers at a commission nomination meeting held in Blackshear on June 26. His term will expire in March of 1990. Ex-officio members of Georgia's commodity commissions include Tommy Irvin, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture; T.M. "Mort" Written Contracts Recommended When Marketing Vegetable Harvest This time of year, Georgia vegetable farmers are busy gathering their crops of cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and other produce. While our producers may grow a wide variety of high quality vegetables, they must have a market for their crop before they can realize success. For this reason, the Georgia Department of Agriculture provides the services of 6 area marketing coordinators to make individual contact with local producers and advise them on grading, packaging, marketing and promoting their produce. For example, area marketing coordinators can assist growers when making arrangements to sell their vegetables. In times past, producers simply depended on a handshake or verbal agreement. But as the produce business has expanded and evolved into a more complicated industry, farmers are now urged to take the time to prepare written agreements when marketing their crops. A written agreement or contract can eliminate potential disputes and provides clarity as to what both the buyer and seller expect during a business transaction. When selling vegetables, the following components should be included in such an agreement: * Name and address of both the buyer and seller. * Date of the transaction. * Weight and/or number of con- tainers of vegetables. * Grade, size or type of produce. * Price and date of payment; whether vegetables are to be sold free on board (FOB) or on consignment. While a thorough sales agreement may not totally eliminate problems between the buyer and seller, it certainly can help promote understanding and provide the necessary documentation a farmer may need should a problem arise. Georgia law requires that anyone who deals in agricultural commodities must be bonded unless cash is paid at the time of a transaction. For this reason, vegetable farmers should sell only to bonded dealers. To verify if a dealer is bonded or to request the assistance of an area marketing coordinator, farmers can call the market managers at any of the department's 17 farmers' markets or call the department toll free at 1-800-282-5852. Ewing, President of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; Gene Marks, a farmer from Mansfield; and Alien Sherrod, a farmer from Coolidge. These members are charged by Georgia Law to make appointments for the boards of eight of the state's commodity commissions. Field Day Designed To Help Landowners Georgia landowners interested in learning how to increase the value and benefits of farm and forest lands should plan to attend the Land-Use and Forest Management Field Day scheduled September 27 at the Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin. Participants can view exhibits, demonstrations and presentations designed specifically for private landowners, as well as hear researchers, foresters and conservationists discuss such topics as managing wildlife, marketing timber, and managing hardwood and pine forests. Aquaculture specialists from the Cooperative Extension Service will be on hand to discuss renovating ponds and raising farm-fresh fish, and consulting foresters will talk about estate and tax planning. In addition, a landscape architect will demonstrate, ways to develop homesites in wooded areas without destroying natural resources and wildlife habitats. Representatives from several industries will make presentations as well. Registration forms are available at local county Extension offices. For more information, call the Georgia Forestry Commission at 1-800GA-TREES.
