FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 33 PpuqBocktel New Guide Provides Useful County Data Do you know how many people live in Georgia? What percent of the state's population is age 65 and over, and which county has the highest percentage of people in this age group? How many miles of unpaved road are there in Georgia? How much income does the average Georgian report to the Internal Revenue Service? What is the average per capita water use? How many marriages and divorces occur in the state?* Answers to these and hundreds of other questions for all 159 counties can be obtained in the latest edition of the Georgia County Guide. The Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Douglas C. Bachtel, rural sociologist, University of Georgia, Cooperative Extension Service, Hoke Smith Annex, Athens, 30602._____________________ Guide is a statistical fact book which has been published annually by the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service since 1981. The information in the Guide is obtained from the most recently released annual reports of various federal and state agencies, but the data is not just boring statistics. The information is presented in a readable and useful format. For example, the book not only presents the most current data available, but shows historical information as well. You can find the population for every county and 512 municipalities back to the 1930s. We list the number of physicians who practiced in every county in the 1950s, income from the 1960s, and unemployment from 1980, as well as the latest information available. We also list the dates of county creation. In addition to trend data, we have calculated percent changes and try to show percentages whenever possible. Finally, we also present county rankings so the reader can tell how a particular county ranks with respect to all the other counties. We do this so that the average person can use the material easily. Who needs this information? For starters, the business community does. Realtors, developers, medical establishments and engineering (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, August 23, 1989 Corn Harvest Underway Department Bans Poultry From Two Missouri Hatcheries Georgia's corn harvest got underway this month with the crop rated mostly good to excellent thus far. According to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service, corn yields are expected to average 100 bushels per acre, which is 15 bushels per acre above the previous record high set in 1982. If the forecast proves true, the state's corn production may reach 55 million bushels, based on 550,000 acres harvested. All shipments of newly hatched chicks from the Clinton Hatchery in Clinton, Missouri, and the Grainbelt Hatchery in Windsor, Missouri, have been banned by Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The ban was imposed after the Georgia Poultry Diagnostic Laboratory found several shipments from these hatcheries to be infected with pullorum disease. The hatcheries will not be allowed to transport any poultry into Georgia until the infection has been satisfactorily cleared and they regain an NPIP Pullorum Free status. Anyone who has received shipments from these two hatcheries after January 1, 1988, or observed clinical signs in their flock, is advised to contact the Animal Health Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture at 404-656-3667 or the Georgia Poultry Diagnostic Laboratory at 404-535-5996. Pullorum, a highly infectious disease caused by the bacteria Salmonella pullorum, can induce clinical illness in all species of poultry (chickens, turkeys, pheasants, geese, quail, etc.). The bacteria usually is spread by egg transmission due to infected hens. Exposure Farm Land Edition Planned In September The next farm land edition of the Market Bulletin will be published Sept. 20. Deadline for this issue is Sept. 6. Please follow these guidelines when submitting an ad for publication in the farm land edition: also can occur through contaminated feed and objects, infected droppings, cannibalism, and egg eating. Occasional infections in humans have been produced by massive exposure following ingestion of contaminated foods and are characterized by the rapid onset of severe gastrointestinal signs. Infected birds do not exhibit specific clinical signs; rather, symptoms vary depending on the age of the birds, the current medication being administered and the degree of pullorum exposure. The peak death rate occurs during the second and third week of life with rapid decline thereafter. Illness often is more common than death, resulting in adults that are infective carriers. Affected chicks may appear very sick and depressed, have reduced appetites, show whitish diarrhea, and huddle away from the rest of the flock. Labored breathing and blister-like lesions on the joints of the feet also may be observed. Survivors may appear retarded in growth, underdeveloped, and poorly feathered. The bacteria frequently localizes in the ovaries of hens resulting in low egg production and hatchability. Pullorum disease may be diagnosed by a combination of blood tests, autopsy findings, and tissue cultures. In a control program, positive blood findings are of major (Continued on page 12) Only farm land may be advertised. Land tracts must be at least five acres in size and located in Georgia. In April, 1989, the Mar ket Bulletin ceased publishing the Farm Services ad category because of problems arising from commercial entities advertising their services in this publication. Since that time the Bul letin office has received a number of requests to continue this category for the benefit of those agricultural producers and Georgia consumers who truly need these advertisements in the Bulletin. Therefore, the Farm Services category will be reinstated in the Market Bulletin as of September 6, 1989, with the following guidelines applying to all advertisers: Listings will be published in the Bulletin in the first issue of each month only. Ads must be submitted each month by the specified deadline, which is the 15th of each month preceding the month in which the ad is to be published. Advertisers must submit a signed notarized statement indicating that they are performing the service offered themselves and that they are not part of a commercial operation. This statement will only need to be submitted once and will be kept on file in the Bulletin office. If the advertiser later wishes to list another type service, a signed notarized statement must be sent in for that service and any other subsequent services offered. Advertisers may have only one listing in the Farm Services category, and the ad must not exceed 30 words. All farm services must be performed on the farm of the individual desiring the service. Page 12 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, August 23, 1985 Grandpa's Garden Luffa gourds (sometimes known as dishrag gourds) are processed a little differently than their ornamental counterparts. Harvest the gourds when they are mature and simply peel the skin away to expose the fibrous inner layer. Place this portion of the gourd in a sunny location for a week. When the pulp has dried, shake out the seeds. You can bleach your coarse "sponge" in the sun or in a mild solution of peroxide and water. Certain herbs, such as mint, tarragon and wild majoram, spread so fast outdoors that they will overtake your garden unless you control them. You can restrict these perennials by confining their roots with a large section of stovepipe or a large coffee can with both ends removed. If you have included peanuts in your garden, inspect plants every couple of days as harvest time approaches. Prior to maturity, peanut plants will begin to lose their green color and the leaves will turn yellow. Check plants in different parts of your rows to determine if pods directly under the main part of the plant are ready to harvest. The veins inside the mature pods should be a dark color and the peanut skins will be papery thin and light pink. When the majority of your plants are mature, you can start digging. Keep in mind that when harvesting "ground peas," the soil should not be too wet or too dry or you might lose some nuts in the retrieval process. Harvest your Jerusalem artichoke crop when the flowering tops begin to die. Because this plant is so prolific, be sure to gather all of your crop. Any tubers left in the ground will likely grow as volunteers next spring and if left unchecked could develop into a bothersome weed. Handicraft Edition The next handicraft edition of the Market Bulletin will be published Sept. 13. Deadline for notices is Aug. 30. An affidavit stating that the handicraft item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale, must be included with the notice. Otherwise, it will not be published. Poultry (Continued from page 1) value in detecting infection and are commonly used to screen interstate shipments and flocks on the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP). Several antibiotics have been found to be effective in decreasing the death loss but no drug is capable of eliminating the infection. In most instances, it is advisable to destroy survivors, clean and disinfect quarters, and replace with Pullorum-free stock. Bananas Provide Exotic Alternative For Backyard Gardeners If you are tired of growing marigolds, impatiens, and other "tradi- tional" plants, and you yearn for something a little different, considering growing bananas. Of all the interesting plants which can be grown in Georgia, none seem to draw more attention than the banana tree. Plant enthusiasts who grow bananas find the exotic plant becomes a conversation piece for the whole neighborhood, especially when it flowers and produces "hands" of bananas. Since the plant also grows well in containers, it has become popular with gardeners having limited space, such as those living in apartments. The banana plant is unusual in that it is monocarpic, that is, the plant dies after blooming and producing fruit. But the banana pre- pares for its reproduction prior to its death by producing an abundance of "pups" at the base of the plant. These pups can be detached shortly after bloom, and will grow into new banana trees. If the mother plant is especially vigorous, pups can be removed even before they make their appearance above ground. The average banana will produce about five pups before the mother dies. In the tropics it takes a banana about 18 months to go from pup to fruiting, but in Georgia, two grow- ing seasons usually are necessary for fruit production. Plants grown in containers must be brought indoors during winter to protect them from frost. However, plants grown in the ground must be dug up by the roots and the stalk stored in a dark location between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit in order to produce fruit the following year. If fruit production is not desired, the roots can be left in the ground south of the fall line. But if plants are left in the ground in northern Georgia during winter, they may not survive. A heavy mulch may improve the chances of survival, but it is not guaranteed, particularly if the winter is severe. Bananas are heavy users of potassium, and brown, dry leaf edges usually indicate a deficiency of this nutrient. Nitrogen deficiency also is common in warm weather with yellowing of the lower leaves as evidence of the problem. To ensure an adequate supply of these nutrients, a 5-10-15 fertilizer should be applied several times during the season. Alternately, a solution of 1/2 teaspoon of water soluble 20-20-20 per gallon should be applied on at least a weekly basis. Judy and Fred Alexander of Georgetown, Georgia, certainly have a knack for growing bananas. The Alexanders have produced more than 23 bananas on their tree. Shown above is one of the bananas in its early growth stage. Since they are mostly water, bananas should never suffer for lack of water. If perfect foilage is desired, avoid planting on windy sites because rough winds will tear the leaves. Also, the plants will develop more broad foliage if located in partial shade. For container planting, use a five to ten gallon container filled with half peat moss and half pine bark. This combination will produce a good banana. There are about 40 varieties of bananas available in the United ag consumer line... Q: I am having trouble with rabbits eating the vegetables in my garden. Do you have any suggestions for keeping them away before they destroy the whole garden? A: A secure fence around the garden will not only keep out rabbits, but other "varmints," such as raccoons, skunks, dogs and cats. It is best, though, to put it up before your vegetables start coming up and the animals get that first taste of them. A three-foot-high fence made with chicken wire with a one-inch by one-inch mesh and a strand of electric wire across the top will keep out most of these pests. Make sure the fence is buried a foot deep, or the smaller critters will tunnel under it. You will need a taller fence to keep out deer, since they can jump over most fences. Some experts recommend that a regular, non-electric fence should be at least eight feet tall to keep them away. This is an expensive, but permanent, solution to the problem and can be used year after year. You might also try trapping the rabbits and releasing them at another location. Protective cages or covers may prove practical for the most susceptible crops. Some gardeners have reported success using such natural repellents as blood meal, tobacco dust, ground hot peppers, chili powder and garlic powder. A dog or cat may help to scare away rabbits and other animal pests, provided the pets are not prone to damage your garden. For answers to problems, or questions, concerningproducts or services regulated by the Georgia Deprtment ofAgriculture, write: Consumer Services; Room 227, AgricultureBuilding; Capitol Square; Atlanta, Georgia, 30334; or calltoll-free, 1-800-282-5852 States. The easiest to handle is the Dwarf Cavendish since it rarely grows more than six feet tall and fruits easily. This variety sometimes will fruit indoors during the winter. Dwarf Jamaica Red bananas are stocky with a beautiful red stem. The Gros Michel and the Ice Cream varieties are the bananas of commerce and grow twelve to eighteen feet tall. The Raja Puri from India is intermediate in size and reportedly has the best tasting fruit, but it can be slow growing. The Zebrina has beautiful maroonstriped slender leaves, but the least bit of wind can snap the leafstalks. For gardeners who want to grow something a little different, bananas are a good choice. Unless they grow their own, the taste of a banana fresh off the tree is a treat few folks have the opportunity to enjoy. County Guide (Continued from page 1) firms.
