FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 32 Wednesday, August 16, 1989 Association Promotes Draft Horses & Mules Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of taking water to my dad in the field and riding one of the mules home at dinner. But by the time I was big enough to plow, | the mules were !gone. I grew up on the tail end of the horse-drawn era of agriculture. By the end of the fifties, the animals that had provided the motive and draft power for Georgia farms had gone quietly to the processing plants by the hundreds of thousands. But that's not the end of the story. The good news is: draft horses and mules are more popular and more numerous today than Our guest columnist this week is Rick Holder, president, Georgia Draft Horse and Mule Association, P.O. Box 804, Monroe, Georgia 30655. they have been in many years, and the future looks bright. The fact that draft horses and mules are adaptable, functional, economical and just plain enjoyable may help explain why more stock is being seen on Georgia farms and roads these days. In fact, the work stock revival is national and international in scope, with recent large exportations of mules (for the Afghan war) and purebred draft animals (for breeding) going to the four corners of the globe. Small farmers everywhere are rediscovering the practicality of a well-broken team for a variety of farm applications. Logging, hauling, cutting and raking hay, planting and cultivating are still cost-effective in many instances with horses and mules. The market for shows, parades, wagon trains and the carriage business in our larger towns is also growing, and Georgia breeders are competing well at the major shows regionally and nationally. This combination of the recreational appeal and general usefulness of draft stock is helping to secure a broader base of support from "old hands" and new enthusiasts alike. The Georgia Draft Horse and Mule Association is a statewide (Continued on page 16) Import Regulations Amended For Out-of-State Cattle Since Georgia's tobacco marketing season opened last month, the demand has been strong for the state's "golden leaf." Here, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin (right) talks with Brooks County tobacco farmer Herbert Price at the Pearce Warehouse located in Valdosta. Effective June 14, 1989, the Georgia Department of Agriculture amended the brucellosis requirements for cattle entering Georgia from Class B Brucellosis States. Brucellosis, a contagious bacterial disease of livestock, primarily affects the reproductive tract and causes great economic loss to cattle and swine producers. This bacteria also can cause undulant fever in humans and therefore is of public health significance. Georgia is classified as a Class A Brucellosis State by the USDA, which requires an accumulated 12month herd infection rate of less than .25%. Tremendous strides are being made to attain a Class Free Status for Georgia in 1991. To help reach this goal, greater restrictions recently have been placed on cattle imported from other states with a higher brucellosis infection rate. These restrictions will decrease the risk of brucellosis-infected cattle being added to Georgia's beef and dairy herds. The Class B states to Welcome Centers Feature Georgia-Grown Commodities Visitors stopping by Georgia's welcome centers this summer have had the opportunity to sample southern hospitality firsthand as part of a special promotional campaign sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture's marketing division. A special day was set aside at Welcome Centers in Valdosta, Kingsland, Sylvania, Savannah, Columbus, Ringgold and Tallapoosa, to display a variety of Georgia products and give tourists the chance to sample fresh Georgia Vidalia onions and peaches along with specialty food items such as mayhaw and peach preserves and Vidalia onion relish. Through special cooperation with the Georgia Watermelon Association, many visitors also Special^Handicraft Edition See Ads Page 12 Agricultural Fair List, Page 14 enjoyed a cold slice of watermelon served by the state's watermelon queen, Tiffany Brannen of Unadilla. I have a new baby and do not want to use pesticides in the house. Can your entomologist recommend any other methods of controlling these pests? A: Scorpions prefer to live outside, usually in wooded areas, but they occasionally will wander into houses and other buildings. If you apply insecticides outside where the scorpions live and breed, they should soon die out. Since these creatures like to hide and breed under piles of lumber and other debris, you should move these objects away from the house. Continued on page 14) which these new regulations apply are Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. The interstate brucellosis requirements of cattle entering Georgia from Class B states are as follows: 1. Cattle may be shipped from certified brucellosis free herds provided the date of the last herd test and the certified herd number is written on the health certificate. 2. Cattle may be shipped from a herd having a complete negative herd test within the last 12 months with the individual cattle having a negative test within 30 days of shipment. Both test dates must be written on the health certificate. 3. Cattle may be shipped after (Continued on page 13) Farm Land Edition Planned In September The next farm land edition of the Market Bulletin will be ' published Sept. 20. All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. Any falsification of coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions. In addition, all horse farmers must have had animals in their possession 60 days or more before offering them for sale through this publication. Wednesday, August 16, 1989 THE MARKET BULLETIN Page 13 Treated Timber Terms Can Be Confusing designed for ground contact use and treated with waterborne preserva- tives. Still confused? Perhaps the chart below will help. The items cover the most common situations for which farmers or homeowners would use treated timber. To use the chart, a builder or homeowner need only identify the general purpose for the particular building project, then look for the corresponding code on lumber at the store. (Continued from page 16) While all materials and methods used in the manufacture of treated wood products are inspected by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, consumers need to follow certain precautions in their use: * Wood treated with pentachlorophenol (penta) should not be used where it will be in frequent or prolonged contact with bare skin (for example, chairs and other outdoor furniture) unless an effective sealer has been applied. Urethane, AWPB Standards for Softwood Lumber, Timber and Plywood Preservative General Purpose Standards Standard for Use Above Ground Ground Contact Waterborne preservatives LP-2 Light hydrocarbon solvent/Penta LP-3 LP-22 LP-33 Special Purpose Waterborne preservatives for use in residential and light commercial foundations FDN FDN All preservatives for use in marine (saltwater) exposure MLP MLP AWPB Standards for Marine Piling and Construction Poles Preservative Standard Designation Marine Piling Waterborne and creosote (dual treatment) Creosote and creosote/coal tar solution Waterborne MP-1 MP-2 MP-4 Construction Poles All preservatives CP latex epoxy enamel and shellac make acceptable sealers. * In addition, wood treated with penta or creosote should not be used inside a residence for any purpose, unless an effective sealer is applied to the wood or all exposed surfaces are covered by sheathing, drywall or paneling. Wood treated with these preservatives may only be used in the interiors of commercial buildings or barns, if the interiors are well ventilated or an effective sealer is used. Only treated wood that is visibly clean and free of surface residue may be used for patios, decks and walkways. * Treated wood should not be used for cutting boards or countertops. * Use only ACC (Acid Copper Chromate) or CZC (Chromated Zinc Chloride) treated wood for construction of beehives or bee platforms. "Pressure treated wood is an excellent construction material for farmers and homeowners as well as contractors for it is versatile, economical and readily available," Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said. "Our Department works hard to ensure the continued high quality of this important building material." Not only have tourists sampled a variety of homegrown products, pamphlets on utilizing various Georgia commodities and information on the location of the department's farmers' markets have also been passed along to them. "Although we have been able to spend only one day at each location, we estimate that an average of 1,000 visitors have passed through the welcome centers on each day of our promotion," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "We feel that such efforts certainly leave a good impression on tourists visiting or passing through our state, and we hope that, as a result, they will take the time to seek out Georgia products in the future." Similar promotions are planned at the welcome centers in Lavonia and West Point. In addition, the department is making plans for promoting Georgia apples, sweet potatoes and other vegetables at welcome centers during the autumn months. Nematodes (Continued from page 16) With many fruits and vegetables available for harvest at pick-your-own operations, or for sale at roadside stands and farmers' markets, now is the perfect time to get a copy of the book, "So Easy to Preserve." Published by the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, this book contains over 275 pages of recipes and step-bystep instructions for food preservation methods such as canning, freezing, drying, and pickling. The publication contains the latest USDA information, some of which is not available anywhere else. The book is available for $10. Wednesday, August 16,1989 THE MARKET BULLETIN When to Harvest Vegetables If they are not harvested at the proper stage of maturity, vegetables may undergo a change in taste, appearance and quality. For instance, texture, fiber and consistency are all affected by maturity, both at harvest and afterwards. Respiration and other life processes continue after harvest. If these processes can be slowed down, the shelf life of vegetables can be increased. One method of accomplishing this is to lower the internal temperature. This is a good reason for harvesting vegetables early in the day before the sun's heat has warmed them. Once harvested, vegetables should be kept cool and out of direct sunlight until they are processed or consumed. The following chart should help you in harvesting vegetables when they are at their peak. If you happen to harvest too early, chances are your plants may experience only a reduction in yield. However, if you harvest too late, vegetable quality may decrease. Poor quality usually is attributable to the development of tough fiber and the conversion of sugars into starches which causes a change in taste. If a change in the date, time, etc., is necessary, we will be happy to include the notice again as a correction. Calendar announcements should be as close to 20 words as possible and include the following information: date, time, name of event, location, and name and phone nunber for further information. When submitting multiple listings, please submit events taking place on different dated on separate sheets of paper. (All sheets may be mailed in the same envelope, however.) Livestock sales and auctions, which occur on a regular basis, should be listed in the Livestock Clip & Save Calendar, published monthly, rather than the weekly calendar of events. A date must be listed on livestock sales and auctions in order for them to be publishd in the weekly Calendar of Events. When submitting a notice requesting handicraft exhibits, etc., please specify when you'd like the request to be published; otherwise, it will be included approximately 1 month before the events takes place. If you have questions regarding the Bulletin's Calendar of Events, call 404-656-3682. Page 16 Grandpa's Garden With the wet summer we've been experiencing, some folks may give up on trying to dry anything. But if you want to try drying flower petals for potpourri, place them on an old window screen until they are crumbly. You can also dry herbs, lemon and orange peel and blackberry leaves to add to your potpourri mixture. Be sure that all materials are completely dry before storing them in tightly sealed jars. Since most flowers do not have a fragrance once they are dry, you may need to add a floral or herbal oil (available at many department and craft stores) to the mixture. If you have included sunflowers in your flower garden, you can easily remove the seeds by rubbing two flower heads together. Or if your harvest is small, you may want to stretch a piece of one-halfinch hardware cloth over a wooden box and gently rub the heads over the screen so that the seeds collect in the container. If the kernels are still damp, be sure to spread them on newspaper until they are thoroughly dry. Unfortunately many "critters" find sweet corn as appealing as the gardener who planted the crop. While a dog provides good defense, fencing is about the only foolproof solution to animal raiders in the garden. Before investing in a fence, you might want to give one of these raccoon and deer-deterring strategies a try: * Plant squash or pumpkin vines around your corn patch or lay wire fencing flat on the ground to discourage deer. * Sprinkle talcum powder on the leaves and stalks to ward off raccoons. * Tie half bars of deodorant soap (some folks insist that only Dial will work) to sticks and place them around the edge of the patch. * Invest in a portable radio and play an all-night station in the corn patch. Agrirama Hosts County Fair The Georgia Agrirama will herald the approach of autumn on Labor Day with its annual County Fair of 1896. The fair will provide a backdrop for exhibits of heritage quilts and antique farm equipment, and will include nineteenth century contests such as hog calling, barrel walking and pie eating. Ribbons will be presented to contest winners. The Georgia Agrirama is located at the Eight Street Exit (20) off Interstate 75 in Tifton. Hours are 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Mon. - Fri. For more information, call 912-3863344, or write P.O. Box Q, Tifton, GA 3179. THE MARKET BULLETIN Treated Timber Standards Enforced By Georgia Department of Agriculture Georgia is one of the leading states in the nation in both the production and consumption of treated wood products. While most people understand the need for preserving wood against insect and disease damage, many are confused by the various terms, standards and applications used. The Georgia Treated Timber Products Act was passed in 1983 with authority for enforcement assigned to the Georgia Department of Agriculture. It was the first such comprehensive act passed by a state legislature. Since then the Department has worked closely with the industry, professional associations and other government agencies to improve product quality and increase consumer knowledge about Program Benefits Urban Gardeners There's nothing like the taste of fresh vegetables from your own garden. Fall is coming soon and now is the time to plan your Fall garden. The Atlanta Urban Gardening Program can help you get started. The Urban Gardening Program is part of the University of Georgia Extension Service with offices in DeKalb and Fulton counties. Its purpose is to teach and train limited income families about foodgrowing and proper nutrition. Gardeners enrolled in the program tend community gardens, children's gardens, backyard lots and even container gardens to conserve space. Demonstration plots, gardening clinics, free literature and monthly newsletters are a few of the resources available to help generate results like lowered food costs, attractive neighborhoods and community pride. If you are interested in getting involved with the Urban Gardening Program as a gardener or volunteer, contact John Arnold at 2417444, or Steve Rogers at 572-3261. treated wood products. All treated lumber, timber or plywood products manufactured or sold in the state must comply with the preservative, penetration and retention standards of the American Wood Preservers Association and the American Wood Preservers Bureau, both independent, nonprofit associations. Penetration refers to how deeply the preservative has gone into the wood. In Southern pines for instance, the penetration of preservatives must be at least 2.5 inches or 85% of sapwood depth. Retention refers to how much preservative remains in the wood to assure a long service life. Retention is measured in pounds per cubic foot; the requirements vary by the kind of preservative used. To again use pressure treated softwood in ground contact as an example, the retention standard would be 0.40 pounds per cubic foot of the preservative Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA). Specific concentrations and types of water-borne preservatives used generally are not listed in detail on each piece of lumber sold. Instead, the type of lumber, the AWPB standard met and other pertinent information is prominently displayed on a quality mark or seal approved by the Commissioner of Agriculture. This identification system is recognized and used throughout the lumber industry. The quality mark is found on each piece of larger dimension lumber and on the outside pieces of small lumber bundles. It is designed to provide the consumer a lot of information in a compact format and to make it easier for architects, construction personnel and inspectors to agree on terms and standards. Each standard covers one product, one preservative and one combination measure of penetration and retention. The term AWPB LP22, for example, refers to lumber (Continued on page 13) Pick-Your-Own Notice Georgia growers who would like to be included in the Market Bulletin's Pick-Your-Own listing, scheduled for publication Sept. 6, should clip this notice, provide all of the information shown below and mail it in before the Aug. 23 deadline. Your Name & Address Farm Location County Crop(s) Approximate Availability Area Code & Phone Number Wednesday, August 16,1989 Nematodes Cause Damage To Many Garden Crops Nematodes are tiny, worm-like organisms which live in the soil and feed on plants. Although they are microscopic in size (1/64 to 1/25 inch long), they can cause significant damage to garden crops. According to the Georgia Extension Service, there are about one hundred different kinds of nematodes that attack plants throughout the state. They spread from one location to another through infected plants and can also travel in the soil on equipment or tools. A large percentage of home gardens in Georgia have root-knot nematodes, according to Extension specialists. Root-knot causes knots or galls on the roots and symptoms which vary from uneven growth to death of the plant. While okra is one of the most susceptible crops, every vegetable is prey to some degree. If you think nematodes are a problem in your garden, contact your county Extension agent for advice on how to take a soil sample to be analyzed by the Extension nematology lab in Athens. An affidavit stating that the handicraft item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale, must be included with the notice. Otherwise, it will not be published. Draft Horses (Continued from page 1) organization dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of draft stock in Georgia. In addition to monthly meetings, demonstrations and educational programs, we sponsor a family field day each spring with a plowing match and barbecue. Crops are planted and tended, and everyone who desires may plow a mule or a horse. Each year in October we sponsor the Georgia Draft Horse Show at the Gwinnett Co. fairgrounds. There you can find some of the finest mules in the South, as well as beautiful representatives from the three major draft breeds the Belgian, Percheron, and Clydesdale. The crowd favorites are always the Hitch classes, ranging from the lovely Ladies Cart event to the grand finale, the Six Horse Hitch competition. You could say we are a new group (since 1982) with old-fashioned ideals and a newfound appreciation for the role work stock has played in our heritage, with a never-ending realization of what these same ideals and this same stock can mean to future generations. Plans call for the association's involvement at the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo in Moultrie in October and the Georgia National Fair at Perry in Feb. 1990. If you are interested in joining our association or would like more information about draft horses and mules in Georgia, please write me or call 404-267-6982.
