FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin lo\. 76, No. 29 nut wm Agrirama Preserves Georgia's Ag History Georgia's history is a special comnodity. Last year alone, 60,000 jeorgians, Americans from other states and international travelers lad the unique opportunity to expe- rience the state's rich agricultural and rural history firsthand at Georgia Agrirama. Without the museum, they might never have learned those stories about Georgia. Every day those same people and nore partake of the wonders of nodern Georgia: beautiful scenery, lutstanding foods, friendly people Dur guest columnist this week is W. N. The living history museum located in Tifton jives them an additional chance to [md out where Georgia has been. We are committed at Georgia Agrirama to holding onto the treasures which made Georgia strong. We keep more than 10,000 artifacts in a climate-controlled environment to promise our state that these valued items will never be lost because of neglect or indifference, rhey will be safe and protected when others are ready to admire them and learn from them. Virtually every day of the year we throw open the gates to the 95acre site to invite visitors to step into the late 19th century and visit rural Georgia as she was then. They are able to do so in some wonderful ways. The smell of biscuits baking over the open hearth in Georgia Agrirama pioneer farmhouse will always make you hungry for history as well as for lunch! Watching the farmer plow a straight line behind the mule gives every visitor a new appreciation of today's agribusiness leaders and the history on which they draw every day. The committee advises the secretary of agriculture on swine health issues including: assuring coordination of states' swine health protection programs and federal-state cooperative programs; evaluating the adequacy of state laws and regulations that pertain to the treatment of food waste to swine; and ensuring that records are kept and reports submitted demonstrating state compliance with USDA's swine health protection regulations. Soybean Growers Reaffirm Commission Georgia soybean producers have approved the continuation of the Georgia Soybean Commodity Commission for another three years, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said last week. The votes were cast during a 30day referendum which ended at midnight, July 14. State law stipulates that commodity commissions be reaffirmed by producer vote every three years in order to continue their programs of research, education and promotion. Although there was a nice crop of little peaches, they all fell off. I have an apple tree that did the same thing. Can you tell me what is causing this? I live in south central Georgia. A: Our horticulturist believes that last year's drought may have killed many of the trees' roots. A heavy fruit set cannot be supported by damaged roots and this is why they dropped their fruit. He recommends that you thin the fruit of both trees when it is small to one peach or apply every six inches. Just pick the excess fruit off by hand. He also recommends that you fertilize the trees with 5-10-15 fertilizer to improve the fruit hold. (Continued on page 12) Floriculture Industry Continues To Bloom In Georgia Somewhere in Georgia, something is growing at just about any time of year, thanks to the state's varied and temperate climate. By adding a few degrees of warmth with a greenhouse, plants can be grown virtually year-round. Floriculture, the commerical production of bedding plants, flowering pot plants, foliage plants, perennials and cut flowers, is one of the fastest growing segments of Georgia agriculture. Some of the reasons for the popularity of these plants include an increased appreciation for beauty and color in the environment, an increase in the number of planned and landscaped communities and improved varieties of both native and exotic plants. Another reason is that container plants are usually easier to care for and require less inputs, including water, than mass planting. Many annuals also can be selected for specific site, sun and water requirements to cope (Continued on page 12) With each passing year, the popularity of bedding plants and hanging baskets increases at Georgia State Farmers Markets. So, too, does the value of floriculture to Georgia's economy.
