FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 28 'David Kiwd Agronomy Programs Benefit Ga. Farmers The mission of the University of Georgia Agronomy Division is to develop new knowledge about crop production and our soil's resource base through its research programs, [to impart this aci cumulated knowl| edge to new gen|erations through j its teaching projgram, and to provide practical applications to farmers through the Extension service. In the past, Agronomy programs of research, teaching, and Extension have been successful in increasing yields of our agronomic crops and making their production more efficient. Plant breeding and Our guest columnist this week is Dr. David R. Kissel, professor and head of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Agronomy Department, Room 3111, Miller Plant Sciences Building, UGA, Athens, 30602, 404-542-2461. genetics research have created new high-yielding crop varieties. Soil testing programs have determined the correct rates of fertilizers and other soil amendments needed for each crop. Pests have been controlled with crop rotations, use of resistant crop varieties, and pesticides. In the area of pest control and in other areas, agronomists have worked closely with weed scientists, entomologists, plant pathologists, agricultural engineers, horticulturists and animal scientists. Today, one farmer feeds 93 people, whereas in 1920, one farmer fed 8 people. Such improvement in agricultural output per family not only makes food less expensive for the consumer, but, with fewer people needed to provide our nation's food, also allows a much larger non-farm population to be engaged in other pursuits, such as manufacturing activities, commerce, and social services. Such high output per farmer has therefore been a great factor in the development of our nation as a world power in business and commerce, and in the maintenance of our high standard of living. Needless to say, a well developed agricultural industry has been an essential partner in making our agriculture so efficient. Private (Continued on page 14) Wednesday, July 19, 1989 Watermelon harvest is underway in Georgia and wagonloads of this popular fruit waiting to be loaded onto trucks are a common sight in the southern part of the state. For more information on the state's watermelon crop, turn to page 16. USDA Approves Aerial Label For Herbicide The U.S. Environmental Protec- tion Agency has granted approval of an aerial label for the herbicide, CLASSIC for use on peanuts, after Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin requested an expedited review of the pesticide last week. CLASSIC, a new herbicide for controlling Florida beggarweed in peanuts, was approved earlier this year by EPA for ground applica- tions only. (Continued on page 14) ag consumer line... Q: Do you have any information about the effectiveness of the deer warning devices I see for sale in various sports shops? They are whistle-like devices for placement on the bumper or hood of a car or truck to scare away deer and other animals. They are supposed to make a sound so high-pitched that it is inaudible to the human ear, but irritating to the animals. How do we know if these gadgets really work if we can't hear them? A: According to wildlife experts with the Department of Natural Resources, tests performed on these devices found them to be ineffective. Once the deer become familiar with the sound, they ignore it. Also, the devices do not control the direction in which the deer will run once they hear the sound. Other tests have also been performed that confirmed these findings. *** For answers to problems, or questions, concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write Consumer Services, Room 300 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334; or call toll-free, 1-800-282-5852, or 6563645 in metro-Atlanta. Inside Georgia Cooking ...........page 5 Helping Each Other.....page 11 Livestock Quotations.....page 7 Tobacco Market Schedule .............. .......pagelS Summer Milk Supplies Adequate To Meet Needs of Consumers Although Georgia traditionally experiences a reduction in milk supplies during the summer months, the state is in good shape this year, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Milk production often tapers off June through August due to the impact of hot weather on dairy cows. In addition, many dairymen choose to breed their cows this time of year so that the animals can come back into full production by September, when the demand for milk increases with the beginning of school. "While our production is currently down, as we would expect this time of year," said Irvin, "we are producing six million pounds of milk a month more than we were this time last year and one million pounds a month more than we were in 1985, during the early stages of the dairy termination program. "Georgia's dairy producers have experienced good weather conditions this year which has resulted in less stress on the cows and good supplies of hay. "We need to keep in mind that overall, Georgia is a milk deficit state. But while the number of tankers bringing in milk is on an upward trend for the summer, we're not importing any more milk than we have been in previous years," said Irvin. "Of course, Georgia dairy processors must pay a higher price for milk imported from other states, but only time will tell whether or not this will impact prices at the retail level." Georgia currently has some 633 dairy farms which produced 1.230 billion pounds of milk in 1988 or an average of 102.5 million pounds of milk per month. 111^ Illll^^ ;||ll||||||i|||li||||ilp Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July 19,1989 If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Mia Haney 651-9082.
