FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 22 Wednesday, May 31, 1989 Theme Promotes Georgia's Good Taste Farm Front 5-Year Downturn Ends for Exports In a continuing effort to introduce consumers to the quality of Georgia agricultural products, the Georgia Department of Agriculture is launching a new promotional campaign using "Georgia Always in Good Taste" as the theme. "We believe that Georgia products are superior in quality and flavor," said Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "So it was only natural to select a theme which emphasized the excellent taste of our products." Department promotions will focus on the theme and producers are encouraged to use the logo on packaging and advertising mate- Apiculture Course Planned June 10 The annual beekeepers short course for beginners and experienced beekeepers will be held June 10 at the University of Georgia in Athens. The meeting, which is sponsored by the UGA Department of Entomology and the Georgia Beekeepers Association, will start with registration at 7:30 a.m. in the Biological Sciences Building (auditorium 404-E.) The course will last 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Demonstrations of practical beekeeping will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the UGA Apiary on the Horticulture Farm, Hog Mountain Road, six miles south of Athens. Topics and demonstrations will include honey bee biology and behavior, colony examination and colony division, management for honey production, honey house operations, recognition, prevention and control of bee diseases and honey bee swarms. The potential impact of Africanized honey bees and parasitic Asiatic mites on beekeeping in the U.S. will be highlighted. Honey bee specialists, commercial honey and queen and package bee producers will teach the course. Cost is $25 for the program. Advance registration must be made by June 8. For more information, contact Dr. Alfred Dietz, Department of Entomology, University of Georgia, Athens, 30602, 404-542-2816. GEORGIA AIWVS IN GOOD TASTE rial. While the "Good Taste" seal will help consumers readily identify products or information about Georgia commodities, the logo should not be mistaken as a mark of certification from the department. "We have always taken an active role in promoting commodities produced in our state and this theme brings a new focus to the department's promotional efforts," said Irvin. "Georgia is blessed with the resources to produce a wide variety of quality products and we need to let consumers know about the many fresh commodities and specialty food products we have available." Georgia's agricultural exports were valued at $417.3 million in 1988, according to recent figures released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This indicates a reversal of a five-year decline in the value of the state's exports. Tobacco was the top export commodity with a value of $92.4 million, followed by poultry and poultry products worth $77.4 million. Soybeans, cotton, wheat, live animals and meat were among the other major products exported. Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said that the state's reputation for quality farm and ranch products, along with decreased value of the dollar, helped boost the export figure. "Farm commodity prices are higher than a year ago, and there's strong demand for our agriculture products," Irvin said. "I'm optimistic that our export sales will continue to improve over the months ahead." ag consumer line... Q: How do I propagate new azaleas from the ones I have in my yard? A: The easiest way to propagate azaleas is by layering. Simply bend a lower branch to the ground, weight it down with a rock or similar object, and cover the stem (not the leaves) with dirt. In about 6 months, the branch will have rooted and may be separated from the mother plant. (Spring is the best time of year to do this.) It is also possible to do root cuttings. Take cuttings from healthy wood that is part of the current season's growth, 4-5 inches long. Make a smooth, slanted cut with a sharp knife, dust the ends with rooting powder, then stick about 2 inches of the stems in a medium that is free of insects and disease, such as vermiculite, potting soil or a mixture of half coarsegrain sand and half peat moss. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet, and away from direct sunlight. You may have to remove one or two leaves from the bottom, but leave the rest on to manufacture food for the plant. When the root system is about 1 inch long, the cuttings may be transplanted into a soil mixture. Rooting should take 8-12 weeks. Other shrubs may also be rooted from cuttings, such as boxwoods, camellias, hydrangeas and roses. **** For answers to problems, or questions, concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write Consumer Services, Room 300 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334; or call tollfree, 1-800-282-5852, or 656-3645 in metro-Atlanta. Ohio Man Fined For Bogus Onions Produce distributor Mike Zurowski of Cleveland, Ohio, has been fined $3,000 by Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The fine was issued after Zurowski admitted to packing, distributing and selling onions labeled as "Sunsweet Vidalia Onions, Grown and Packed for Continental Farms, P.O. Box 960303, Riverdale, Georgia 30274." Three truckloads of the illegally labeled onions were marketed in Ohio through Freshline, Zurowski's produce firm. Zurowski agreed to destroy remaining boxes bearing the false labeling. The label violation was brought to the attention of the Georgia Department of Agriculture by the newly-formed Vidalia Onion Federal Marketing Order Committee after distribution had taken place. The $3,000 fine paid by Zurowski was collected in accordance with the Vidalia Onion Law of 1986. Zurowski was in direct violation of the law by marketing onions as Vidalias without being registered as a grower or packer in Georgia and failing to meet labeling requirements. In addition, Zurowski was guilty of selling onions labeled "Vidalias" which were not produced in the production area defined by law, and for claiming that Continental Farms was operating in Georgia. "We've seen very few violations of this type since the Vidalia Onion legislation was passed in Georgia three years ago," said Irvin. "This situation reinforces the importance of the law to protect our Vidalia onion growers and our consumers from fraudulent labeling practices and to provide a viable market for this premium Georgia product." Permethrin Exempt For Pea Pest Fight The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin's request for specific exemption for emergency use of the insecticide permethrin to control cowpea curculio in southern peas. LasJ week, Irvin issued a crisis exemption to allow farmers to begin using the pesticide while the specific exemption request was pending. MARKET BULLETIN Georgia Department of Agriculture Capitol Square Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Please include the area codes with phone numbers when advertising. Bulletin Calendar Guidelines To submit a notice for inclusion in the Market Bulletin's Calendar of Events, follow these guide lines: Please mail notices at least 3 weeks prior to the date of the event. Items will be published 2 weeks prior to their occurance in the calendar. Livestock sales and auc tions may be included in the calendar twice: other events, such as seminars, meetings, shows, craft fairs, etc., are listed only once. Equine events should be included in the quarterly horse edition and should not be re-submitted for publica tion again in the calendar. If a change in the date, time, etc., is necessary, we will be happy to include the notice again as a correction. Calendar announce ments should be as close to 20 words as possible and include the following infor mation: date, time, name of the event, location, and name and phone number for further information. When submitting multi ple listings, please submit events taking place on dif ferent dates on separate sheets of paper. (All sheets may be mailed in the same envelope, however.) Livestock sales and auc tions, which occur on a reg ular basis, should be listed in the Livestock Clip & Save Calendar, published monthly rather than the weekly Calendar of Events. When submitting a no tice requesting handicraft exhibits, etc., please specify when you'd like the request to be published; otherwise, it will be included approxi mately 1 month before the event takes place. If you have questions regarding the Bulletin's Calendar of Events, call 404-656-3695. Did You Know? There is a toll free number you can call for livestock prices.
