FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 21 Wednesday, May 24,1989 Turfgrass Careers Hook Up With Golf As professionals in higher education, we review available and potential career markets to better advise our students the leaders and managers of tomorrow. The careers which are most rapidly growing are in the areas of ornamental horticulture and turfgrass management. These two areas of employment are directly proportional to growth and development in industry. Employees in real estate development golf courses are in demand by industry and consumers alike because of the variety of environments available. Lush landscapes Our guest columnist this week is E. Dean Seagle, assistant professor and coordinator of Ornamental Horticulture Technology at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and director of the Georgia Turfgrass Foundation Inc., PO Box 30, ABAC Station, Tifton, 31794-2693, 912-386-3264.______ and beautiful golf holes developed in the privacy of our expansive lands offer personal gratification. As the use of the turfgrasses increases, so does the demand for extensive landscaping projects. Our challenge has been identified. During "Golf Summit '88," which was held last November in Ponte Vedra, Fla., the National Golf Foundation (NGF) provided a summary of its long-range strategic planning program for fulfilling the nation's need for 4,000-5,000 new golf courses by the year 2000. That rate of demand and development requires approximately 1.01-1.26 new golf courses per day until the year 2000. If this demand continues, available jobs for horticultural graduates should remain plentiful. A significant number of new facilities will be needed to accommodate increased demand from an aging population of golfers, who play more frequently, coupled with modest (2 percent) growth in the number of golfers, according to NGF. Under this 2 percent growth scenario, the number of golfers will (Continued on page 16) Peanut Consumption Increases A dramatic increase in the consumption of peanuts - 11.3 percent compared to the same period last year - has left growers "optimistic," according to the Georgia Peanut Commission. National peanut consumption reached a record high 11.4 pounds per capita last year. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Peanut Stocks and Processing Report for the first seven months of this marketing year (compared to the same period last year) consumption of all types of shelled peanuts consumed in primary products are up 11.3 percent. Total peanut butter is up 19.2 percent, salted peanuts up 6.9 percent and peanut candy up 1.9 percent. During the same period, Runner type peanut consumption continued to increase - rising 15.8 percent, with a 17.9 percent increase in peanut butter consumption, a 24.5 percent increase in salted peanuts and a 6 percent increase in peanut candy. The USDA Peanut Stocks and Processing Report states that Runners account for 78.9 percent of all total edible peanut consumption. The Runner type variety of peanut prevails as Georgia's predominate type of peanut grown (accounting for about 95 percent of the acreage.) In 1988, Georgia Peanut growers planted approximately 688,- 000 acres of peanuts. Georgia grows about 45 percent of the nation's total peanut production. For more information, call 912-386-3470. Irvin Issues Crisis Exemption In War On Southern Pea Pest Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has issued a crisis exemption for use of the insecticide permethrin to control cowpea curculio in southern peas. Cowpea curculio is the single most destructive pest of southern peas, one of Georgia's major vegetable crops. On May 4, Irvin requested a specific exemption from the Environmental Protection Agency to allow use of the pesticide. "Although I expect a favorable response from EPA in the coming weeks, the crisis exemption was needed to protect early southern peas being grown for fresh markets and for canning and freezing purposes," Irvin said. The Commissioner said he is hopeful that EPA will grant full registration for this use prior to the 1990 growing season. Currently, there are no effective alternative pesticides to control cowpea curculio. Without the use of (Continued on page 16) Spring Months Busy Time For Control of Fire Ants A relatively mild winter may mean an active spring in Georgia for troublesome fire ants. "Based on our observations, there was essentially no winter kill or mortality in our fire ant population," explained Dr. Don Canerday, chairman of the division of entomology at the University of Georgia. "Most of the (fire ant) colonies we went into the winter with, survived. There is tremendous potential out there for some meaningful spread." Stan Diffie, a research technician at the UGA Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, agreed with Dr. Canerday. "Because we didn't get any extended cold it looks like it's going to be a pretty good year for all insects," said Diffie. Diffie, under the supervision of entomologist Craig Sheppard, is studying the use of chemicals and natural enemies to control fire ants. Research projects are under way in 23 counties. (Continued on page 15) The first peaches of the season were packed and shipped May 10. Garden Valley and J. & W. Orchards in Reynolds, and J.T. MeKenzie in Montezuma, were up and running on this first day of the 1989 peach season. Georgia growers are expected to produce approximately 130 million pounds of peaches this season, about the same as last year's crop. This young lady seemed to be enjoying her first day back on the packing line at Garden Valley.
