FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 76, No. 2 Pi Gewut W. Blueberry Industry Strong in Georgia Of all the crops grown commercially in Georgia, few have a more interesting history and greater future than the blueberry. Several different species of blueberries are grown commercially in the U.S. In the northeast, the low-bush blueberry grows wild, but is fertilized and managed to improve yields. In Michigan, New Jersey and North Carolina, the northern highbush is grown. Because of the high number of chill hours (hours below 45 degrees F. in the winter) required; normal growth in the spring and lack of heat tolerance, the northern highbush is adapted only to upper North Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Gerard W. Krewer, Extension horticulturist for fruit crops, Tifton Rural Development Center, PO Box 1209, Tifton, 31793.______ Georgia. Here in Georgia, rabbiteye blueberry is king. With about 3,000 acres under cultivation, we have the largest rabbiteye blueberry industry in the world. How did this come to pass? The answer can be partly attributed to fishermen. The rabbiteye blueberry is native to many river basins in South Georgia. Around the turn of the century, two fishermen, J.T. Bush and W.M. Walker, collected superior wild plants and planted them in their yards. In 1926 and 1937, these selections were planted at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton. In 1940, a cooperative research effort on the Darrow blueberry was begun at Tifton by researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Beltsville, Md.) and a North Carolina Experiment Station. This breeding and research program was expanded in 1944, when Dr. Tom Brightwell arrived in Tifton to begin work as a small fruit breeder. Brightwell worked diligently through the years, along with Dr. Arlen Draper, to cross and re-cross the wild plants collected by the (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, January 11, 1989 Farm Front Conservation Notice The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service reminds farmers with highly erodible farmland, that they must have a conservation plan approved for the acreage in order to remain eligible for farm program benefits. Most of those farmers who have not yet submitted a plan will receive notice from the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) within the next few weeks. Under provisions of the Food Security Act of 1985, anyone who farms highly erodible land must develop a conservation plan for the acreage and have it approved by their local soil conservation district by Dec. 31, Without a conservation plan, they will lose their eligibility for price and income supports, Farmers Home Administration loans, Commodity Credit Corporation storage payments, Conservation Reserve Program payments and other programs under which USDA makes commodity-related payments. Loss of eligibility applies to all of the land a person farms, not just highly erodible acreage. About 65 percent of the nation's farmers participating in USDA crop programs already have obtained approval for their conservation plans. Milk Support Price Remains Unchanged The national support price for milk will remain at $10.60 per hundredweight until March 31, according to a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture announcement. The support price is unchanged under provisions of the Agricultural Act of 1949, as amended by the Food Security Act of 1985 and the Disaster Assistance Act of 1988. These provisions require the Secretary of Agriculture to increase the support price on Jan. 1, if the purchases by the Commodity Credit Corporation under dairy price support program in that calendar year are estimated to be less than 2.5 billion pounds, milk equivalent. Georgia Peanut Commission Announces 30-day Referendum The 30-day referendum for positions on the Georgia Peanut Commission's Board of Directors began Jan. 2, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Peanut growers in Districts 2, 4 and 5 will be asked to indicate their preference from growers nominated at public meetings in early December. Currently, the District 2 seat is held by Gordon Sumner of Sylvester, the District 4 seat by W.C. "Billy" Griggs of Unadilla, and the District 5 seat by Wilbur Gamble of Dawson. The three-year terms of these producer/members will expire in May. Nominated for the District 2 seat were Armond C. Morris of Ocilla and Carter Choate of Tifton. The incumbent, Gordon Sumner, is not seeking another term. District 4 nominees are incumbent Griggs, and Unadilla grower Wendell Dunaway. District 5 nominees are incumbent Gamble, who also serves as chairman of the commission, and Melvin Isler of Bluffton. USDA Announces 1989 Peanut Poundage Quota The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced a national poundage quota of 1,440,000 short tons (2,880 million pounds) for the 1989 peanut marketing year. This quota is 37,800 short tons above the quota that was established for the 1988 crop. As required by the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938, as amended, the national poundage quota for the 1989 crop of peanuts has been set at a level that is equal to the estimated quantity of peanuts that will be devoted to domestic edible seed and related use in the 1989 marketing year, which begins Aug. 1. The crop national poundage quota is allocated to each state based on the state's share of the 1988 crop national poundage quota. Increases in the state's poundage quota will be allocated among qualifying farms in accordance with prescribed procedures. In a January 1986 referendum, peanut growers approved poundage quotas for the 1986-1990 crops. For more information, call 202-447-6789. The Georgia Agricultural Commodities Act states that at least two nominations must be made for each seat on the commission. Voting in the nomination referendum will be by secret ballot. District 2 counties include Turner, Ben Hill, Irwin, Coffee, Worth, Tift, Berrien, Atkinson, Colquitt, Cook, Lanier, Echols, Lowndes, Brooks and Thomas. District 4 counties include Wilkinson, Twiggs, Laurens, Bleckley, Houston, Dooly, Pulaski, Dodge, Wheeler, Telfair, Wilcox and Crisp. District 5 counties are Talbot, Taylor, Macon, Schley, Marion, Chattahoochee, Stewart, Webster, Sumter, Lee, Terrell, Randolph, Quitman and Clay. Any peanut producer residing in one of these counties who does not receive a ballot may write Georgia Department of Agriculture, 328 Agriculture Building, Atlanta, 30334, or call 404-656-3678, to request a ballot. Producers must return their ballots no later than midnight, Jan. 31. Following the referendum, appointments for the three-year terms will be made by the ex officio members of the commission: Commissioner Irvin; T.M. "Mort" Ewing, President of the Georgia Farm Bureau; Marvin Dunson, a farmer from Toccoa; and Terry Gerrald, a farmer from Statesboro.
