FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 75, No. 7 TtUt CfllCHUUC FFA Celebrates New Spirit in Ag National Future Farmers of America Week will be observed Feb. 20-27, with club members in chapters across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, organ- izing events and activities to create awareness of, and support for, high school agriculture and the FFA. A national or|?^i -t* ganization of 416,000 students in 8,000 local chapters, FFA helps thousands of young people prepare for careers in agriculture. Activities and award programs compliment instruction in Our guest columnist this week is Tim Coleman, president of the Georgia Association, Future Farmers of America. Coleman attends high school at Emanuel County Institute, Twin City._____________ high school agriculture courses by giving students practical experience in the application of agricultural skills and knowledge. Developing agricultural leadership, citizenship and cooperation are among the FFA's major objectives. I am proud to serve as president of our state association. The FFA is the oldest and largest vocational youth organization in Georgia. Many former club members hold prominent positions in our state, an indication that the skills developed by participation in FFA activities can play a major role in future success. During the past year, Georgia FFA members have been recognized for excellence on several occasions. The forestry team from our state won the national competition for the second year in a row. During the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo., 23 Georgia FFA members were awarded the American Farmer Degree. This is the highest degree of active membership in the organization. Six adults from Georgia were awarded the Honorary American Farmer Degree. The theme for 1988 FFA Week observance is: FFA - Agriculture's New Spirit. This spirit is evident (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, February 24, 1988 Farm Financial Survey Underway An important survey on farm financial conditions began in Georgia last week. The Farm Costs and Returns Survey started Feb. 20 and will continue through March 24. This major nationwide survey on the costs of production and financial conditions throughout the farm sector is conducted by the state offices of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Approximately 600 Georgia farms will be visited by interviewers working for the survey. The National Agricultural Statistics Service is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Representatives from the Statistics Service will be knocking on the doors of not only Georgia farmers, but about 24,000 farmers and ranchers across the U.S. Most of the Georgia farmers selected for the interview process have already been notified by mail. Boll Weevil Eradication Interviewers will be collecting data on farm expenses, finances, capital purchases and costs of production for 1987. The information will be used to determine farm production costs, measure farm income and assess farm sector debts, assets and cash flow ~ key indicators of the economic well-being of farmers. Survey findings will also be used to estimate costs and returns for producing individual com- modities. The USDA will publish the re- sults of the survey in various reports scheduled for release beginning this summer. Those chosen to participate in the survey will help provide important information to farm policy makers, university and extension personnel and even to other farmers. The responses to the survey ques- tions will be kept confidential. In fact, after summary information is entered, the original questionnaires will be destroyed so that no one can trace responses back to any individual farmers or farm operations. When results are compiled and analyzed, the survey findings will be reported to the public as well as to lawmakers and agricultural experts. Those who participate in the survey will automatically receive a summary of the results at the state, regional and national level. Handicraft Notice Page 12 Begins Second Year Push During March, cotton farmers throughout Georgia's Eradication Zone will be signing up intended acreage at local Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service offices. The first installment of this year's assessment is $10 per acre. Because program activities will begin in April, with trapping of last year's cotton, funding must come early this year. In order to reduce last fall's assessment, from the proposed $35 per acre to the actual $10 per acre, the U.S. Department of Agriculture had to put their entire program share up front last fall. This left virtually no money for the spring 1988 program, so growers must contribute part of their share early. The remainder of the assessment, $25 per acre, is due June 30. With the early trapping of last year's cotton fields, the program will eliminate most weevils that survived the fall diapause spray. It is critical to remove these weevils from cotton area before cotton (Continued on page 12) Agribusiness Council Completes Focus Study The Georgia Agribusiness Council has recently completed an indepth study of its missions, goals and objectives. Highlights of the study include plans to focus more on agribusiness development and leadership, and to implement those plans in the following areas: development; legislation; a new agribusiness magazine; membership development and services; agribusiness financing; and agribusiness research and marketing. The Council, at its January board meeting, approved the study and will begin implementation immediately. The Council is also in the process of finding a new executive director. A statewide, non-profit membership organization, the Georgia Agribusiness Council strives to effectively promote and represent the agribusiness sector of agriculture. It works closely with all agriculture business leaders and organizations to advance one of Georgia's basic industries agribusiness. Horses, mules, ponies for sale // you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Kathy Lowdermilk 651-9082. All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions.
