FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/'n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 75, No. 6 Peanut Commission Works for Farmers Georgia's peanut farmers have the opportunity this month to chart " the course of the peanut industry in years to come. A referendum is underway to allow peanut farmers > to decide if they wish to continue the Georgia Peanut Commission. The referendum is mandated under Georgia law for each of the state's ' nine commodity commissions. Our guest columnist this week is Wilbur Gamble, chairman of the Georgia Peanut * Commission, 110 E. Fourth St., Tifton, 31794.__________________ , Why have a Georgia Peanut Commission? In the mid-1950s, Georgia peanut farmers were learning new production practices: new equipment for peanut harvesting was being developed; and peanuts were fast becoming big business for our farmers. A number of farsighted pioneers began working to create an entity which could aid in the promotion of peanuts to consumers, re- search peanut development and coordinate educational efforts to teach students of all ages about peanuts and their nutritional value. The result was the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts. Since 1961, the Com- . mission's efforts have been channeled in many directions to serve the peanut farmers of our state. It has funded research which has helped to dramatically increase production of peanuts over the past 27 years. In 1961, farmers were lauded for producing a ton or more of peanuts. Today, our production averages well over a ton per acre, with top growers producing nearly three tons per acre in 1987. With that increased production, the Commission has worked to increase consumption. An ambitious promotional campaign took the message of peanuts to every man, woman and child in the U.S. on two occasions last year. We are working with restaurants, consumer magazines and television outlets to promote peanuts, peanut butter and products containing peanuts, as healthy, nutritious food items - but our work is not over. Competition from around the world has made it tougher for (Continued on page 16) Wednesday, February 17, 1988 Georgia Seedlings Chosen for Historic Tree Groves From the moss-draped live oaks along the sea coast, bent and twisted by the ocean breezes, to the tall, green pines framing Georgia's Appalachians, this state's terrain -much like its past, present and future -- seems inextricably linked with trees. On Friday, the state will celebrate this bond by observing Arbor Day, recognized each year in Georgia on the third Friday in February. Planting trees on Arbor Day in Georgia is more than just a tradition celebrated once a year. Its a way of life. Georgia's forests ac- count for over 60 percent of its land area and generate over $8 billion a year. But in addition to economic considerations, great value is placed on trees for conservation, historic, aesthetic and environmental reasons as well in Georgia. For these reasons, out of 17 trees selected by the American Forestry Association to provide seedlings for special nationally significant tree groves, four are located in Georgia. These "Famous and Historic Tree groves," commemorating the 200th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, will be planted throughout the U.S. Four of those tree groves will be located in Georgia, at Atlanta, Fort Benning, Jackson and Savannah. State trees chosen to supply seedlings include: "The Tree that Owns Itself." Located in Athens, the original white oak on this property was owned by William H. Jackson. In 1820, via his last will and testa- ment, Jackson left the property around the tree, to the tree itself. He stated, "for and in consideration of, the great love I bear this tree," (I bequeath) entire possession of itself and of all land within eight feet of the tree on all sides. Though the original white oak died in 1942, one of its offspring was planted in the same spot - becoming the only tree known to have inherited the land on which it's forebearer stood. The "Liberty Tree." Located in Milledgeville, this willow tree was planted by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1921, using soil samples from historic places in all 48 mainland states. The soil was collected and placed in the tree well where the willow was planted. The "Hagin-Holland White Oak." Located in Dallas, this famous 150-year-old tree was grown from an acorn planted by Archibald Holland and Elizabeth Hagin in 1836 on their Dallas homesite in Paulding County Georgia. The "American Holly." Located on the grounds of the Laurens County Historical Society and Museum in Dublin, this holly tree was planted by the United Daughters of the Confederacy 60 years ago, to commemorate Georgia soldiers who died in the Civil War. Arbor Day Feb. 19 In addition to the trees that were chosen by the American Forestry Association for this special project, there are many other trees throughout the state with historical significance. Many of these trees are live (Continued on page 16) Commissioner Irvin Wins National Award Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has been selected to receive the National Award for Agricultural Excellence, presented by the National AgriMarketing Association.
