FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol.75, No. 6 FHA Focuses On Leadership Future Homemakers of America (FHA) is a youth organization that is an outgrowth of vocational economics classes. Our 1987/88 State theme is, "FHA/HERO -- Leaders ! on the Move." We [ feel our theme allows members to pit discover the best in themselves, 3! and in turn, expeltSE"-':':''li,. '' :'~ :- rience all the new K "" H opportunities "' : waiting for them. By being "Leaders on the Move," FHA can not only help make the world around us a better place to live, but focus on, and help with, concerns facing our peers today. Our guest columnist this week is Kelly Sanford, state president for Future Homemakers of America. She is a junior at Central High School, 113 Central Road, Carrollton, 30117._______________ The FHA takes pride in being the only vocational youth organization to have the family as it's central focus. We are very proud of our organization and all of the learning experiences we have to offer each member. FHA offers a wide variety of activities in which our members grow and learn about themselves and others. With all of the problems teens and their families are facing today, that's important. Feb. 7-13, is National Vocational Education Week, and FHA takes part in the observance by focusing on projects for the school, home, community and family. This week is a very exciting, fun and busy time for FHA chapters throughout the state and nation. Future Homemakers are encouraged to participate in projects designed to enrich the lives of individuals, as well as members of the family, school and community. This year, the officers, selected seven projects for chapters to dig deeply into - then identify and work with the concerns and issues involved. Among the projects chapters are working on this year are, family ties, student body, careers in home (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, February 10, 1988 Rare Viral Disease Diagnosed In Newton County Sheep Flock A Newton County flock of sheep was temporarily placed under quarantine by the Georgia Department of Agriculture last week, following identification of a rarely seen viral disease. The disease, scrapie, has not been diagnosed in Georgia since 1955, due in large part to the state's small sheep population. In recent years, sheep flocks have increased with most animals being imported from other parts of the U.S. The Newton County flock had approximately 200 animals, 130 of which were imported from Iowa, 40 from Illinois and the remaining 30 from another western state. Scrapie predominately infects Suffolk sheep, with 90 percent of reported cases from that breed. Other animals can be infected, although it is not common. Symptoms of the disease include loss of hair, trembling, staggering and possibly death. Three Suffolk sheep - sisters in the same genetic line - died in the Newton County flock. The remaining flock will be placed under surveillance for the next 42 months. The Georgia Department of Agriculture will maintain surveillance. Sheep related through the same genetic line and suffering from scrapie are usually euthanized to stop the disease spread. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will indemnify the farmer for destruction of those animals most susceptible to the disease at two-thirds the appraised value up to $300. "We were fortunate to be notified of the suspicion of the disease," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "With Georgia's growing sheep population, we need to make certain we stop any disease introductions before they have a chance to sperad throughout the state." Tobacco Organization Meets Feb. 16 State Organic Growers Set Feb. 20 Conference The Georgia Organic Growers Association (GOGA), in cooperation with the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service, will host the Conference for Alternative Agriculture, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 20, at Macon Junior College in Macon. Local and national experts will give informative talks on a variety of topics of interest to large and small-scale growers, as well as conservationists and ecologists. Bob Miller, chairman of the Department of Soil Science at the University of North Carolina, and committee chairman for Alternative Agriculture, National Academy of Science, is the keynote speaker. For more information, write: GOGA, P.O. Box 15324, Atlanta, 30333; or call, Gae Broadwater 912386-3416, Deborah Pelham 404-4760473 or Diana Jerkins 404-3737843. The Flue-Cured Cooperative Stabilization Corporation will hold its district meeting for Georgia growers, beginning at 2 p.m., Feb. 16, in Laird Auditorium, South Georgia College, Douglas. This is the 30th annual district meeting for this grower organization, which administers the price support program for flue-cured tobacco. According to B. Frank Strickland of Lakeland, vice president and director from Georgia for the organization, and Fred G. Bond, chief executive officer, topics scheduled to be discussed include: a detailed report on Stabilization's operations; status of the current tobacco pro- gram; and issues pertaining to taxation. In addition to Stabilization's reports, representatives of Tobacco Associated Inc., Tobacco Growers' Information Committee, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Tobacco Division Agricultural Marketing Service, will be among the many allied organizations and agencies present. A brief business session will be held immediately following the meeting to select Stabilization Ad\ -jory Committee members from each of the fluecured tobacco producing counties in Georgia. The 1987 flue-cured tobacco season was very successful, according to Strickland. Receipts by the cooperative amounted to 24.8 million pounds, or 3.24 percent of gross sales. Both the poundage and the percentage of tobacco received under loan in 1987 were the lowest since 1974. Sales from total loan inventory for 1987 amounted to 156.4 million pounds. Thus, Stabilization concluded 1987 with an inventory of 397.3 million pounds, of which 240 million pounds is committed for purchase under the buyout contracts, leaving 158 million pounds available for purchase by the trade, the lowest level since 1974. \__X Top Egg Producer Georgia is one of the nation's leading egg states ranking third in the value of eggs produced, behind California and Indiana. Jackson County is the largest egg producing county in the state. Only one ad per category per household is permitted in the BULLETIN. Page 6 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, February 10, 1988 ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions. In addition, all horse farmers must have had animals in their possession 60 days or more before offering them for sale through this publication. For sale or lease- 2 exc. Attention Equine Advertisers In Georgia, the primary breeding season for horses runs from January through April. In order to better serve the equine industry, on a trial basis the MARKET BULLETIN will begin publishing "at stud" notices each month during the breeding season, rather than limiting this ad category to the special horse edition. Keep in mind that "at stud" notices should be accompanied by a copy of a valid, negative coggins test (made within past 12 months). In addition, the Georgia Animal Protection Act requires that breeding facilities be licensed. Your license number must be submitted with your notice. For licensing information, call 656-3725. Dates and deadlines for "at stud" listings are as follows: March 9 (deadline Feb. 24) April 6 (deadline March 23) Windinger-ASB, outstanding son of World Grand Champ, wing Commander, produces foals w/outstanding natural ability, conf ./attitudes.
