FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 75, No. 40 Wednesday, October 12,1988 New Marketing Strategy Helps Promote Soybeans Soybean farmers are getting involved in marketing their crop and it's making a difference. The American Soybean Association's (ASA) new domestic marketing program is a response to the need to develop new markets for our crop here at home. Marketing activities from ASA have focused on three areas: food uses for soybean oil, soybean oil for dust control in grain feeds, and expanding use of soybean oil-based newspaper inks. After the first year of activity, soybean oil use is up 4 percent. The ASA's efforts to promote the use of soybean oil to control grain Our guest columnist this week is James Lee Adams, a Camilla, Ga., farmer who is president of the American Soybean Association, 777 Craig Road, P.O. Box 27300, St. Louis, Mo., 63141-1700, 314-432-1600. dust began with research to prove that addition of about a cup of oil per ton of grain has no negative effects. Now, many elevators are adopting the new technology with a potential market for over 23 million bushels of soybeans. And the market for soybean oil to control feed dust and add energy in hog and poultry rations is even greater. Hog producers using soybean oil report improved performance and health as well as better working conditions for caretakers. Promoting the use of soybean oilbased ink in newspapers has been equally successful. In just over 12 months, the number of newspapers testing or using soybean oil ink went from five to more than 500. Again, much of the success in getting newspapers to adopt the new ink has come as a result of farmer contact with local newspaper publishers. We've had some great success, but there is much to be done. Thousands of grain elevators could be made safer by converting to soybean oil for dust control. And, we've barely scratched the surface in get- (Continued on page 16) Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin surveys the bounty at a Department of Agriculture Farmer's Market. The State Farmers' Markets in Savannah and Cairo are celebrating 35 years of service to Georgians this year. Savannah and Cairo Markets Celebrate 35th Anniversary Autumn Peanut Harvest Looks Good for Georgia If September predictions hold true, the 1988 peanut harvest may yield Georgia's second largest crop in history, according to the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts. As estimated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the September crop indicated that 966,000 tons of peanuts will be harvested in Georgia on 690,000 acres. If that estimate is correct, this will result in a (Continued on page 16) Local and state dignitaries and members of the media will join Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin at a luncheon celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Savannah State Farmers' Market tomorrow in Savannah. The Cairo State Farmers' Market and the Savannah Market, both opened in the spring of 1953. "During the past 35 years, the people of Savannah and Cairo and the surrounding areas, have depended on the Farmers' Market to supply them with, and provide an outlet for, the sale of fresh fruits and vegetables," said Commissioner Irvin. "As Chatham and Grady counties continue to grow, the markets will continue to meet those needs." A wholesale and retail operation, the Savannah Market is the seventh largest in sales in the state. Last year, the Market had sales of $9,152,000 and impacted the local economy by approximately $25 million, according to financial reports furnished by the Department of Agriculture's Marketing division. "For 35 years the Savannah Market has been a strong and vibrant force in the city's economy," said Irvin. "Through the years it has served the people of Chatham County and helped to establish Savannah as a major distribution center for fresh fruits and vegetables." Peas, butterbeans, watermelons and onions are big sellers at the Savannah Market, which holds the distinction of being the last of the State Farmers' Markets to have a barber shop in operation. At one time, it was tradition to have a barber shop at almost all of the State Markets. In contrast to the larger, more urban Savannah Market is the Cairo State Farmers' Market. It boasted $3 million in total sales last year and operates primarily as a packaging and shipping point market. Okra is the biggest seller in Cairo, with local businesses offering a prize to the first farmer to bring in a bushel of okra during the growing season. Tomatoes and bell pepper are big sellers in Cairo as well. Both Savannah and Cairo carry a full line of summer vegetables- "I am proud of both the Cairo and Savannah markets and I believe they stand as a shining example of how state government and private enterprise can work together to benefit farmers and consumers," said Irvin. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted.
