FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 75, No. 34 foftet State Lawyers' Group Form to Help Farmers More and more often, Georgia farmers and agribusinesses have come to rely on attorneys for advice. Over the past few years, the State Bar of Georgia has been working through the Farmers Assistance Committee to help Georgia farmers and agribusinesses, and their attorneys. One of the committee's objectives is to help those farmers so unfortunate as to be unable to afford legal advice. Thus, we are in the process of creating the Georgia Volunteer Lawyers for Farmers program. Our guest columnist this week is Daniel M. Roper, chairman of the State Bar Farmers Assistance Committee, PO Box 29, Rome, 30163-3701. ____________ Under this pro bono program, a needy farmer will be referred to an attorney whose fee will be reduced, deferred or collected on an installment basis. It is hoped that the program will be operational by October. Although the practice of agricultural law is rewarding, it is also unusually difficult. Farm clients need advice on everything from bankruptcy and federal farm programs to estate planning, taxation and water rights. It is a challenge to farm attorneys to keep up with the changes in these many different areas of the law. To help them do so, the committee is planning an Agricultural Law Handbook and plans to sponsor an annual Farm Law Continuing Education seminar. In May, the first seminar was held in Macon and was attended by 48 attorneys. These projects should help attorneys better represent their farm and agribusiness clients. Because of the recent troubles in the farm economy, the Volunteer Lawyers for Farmers program is especially timely. However, the committee hopes to become a pe'rmanent section of the State Bar and to continue to serve Georgia farmers, agribusiness and their attor- (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, August 31, 1988 Caution Advised for Nitrate Buildup State farmers and ranchers may want to consider having samples of crops grown for animal feed tested for nitrate levels before assuming that the crops are safe from nitrate buildup. "Because of the drought conditions, nitrate levels in plants may be high enough to cause problems in livestock," according to Dr. James Quigley with the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Animal Health division. Sorghum, mil- let, corn, oats, sudangrass, alfalfa, wheat, barley and rye are all susceptible. Without the proper amount of moisture, nitrogen fertilizer com- monly applied to the crops just sits in the soil. When rain does come, the nitrogen is carried into the plants. And, if harvest occurs around that time, the danger of nitrate poison is greater. Although "cattle are highly susceptible to nitrate poisoning," Dr. Quigley added. "High nitrate levels can cause problems in other animals as well." High nitrate levels can lower milk production and cause reproduction and other health problems. According to Dr. Quigley, in some cases the poisoning can result in (Continued on page 12) Egg Commission Announces Recipe Contest Deadline Aspiring chefs and old hands in the kitchen are all eligible to compete for prize money in the Georgia Egg Commission's annual Egg Recipe Contest. To be entered, recipes must be of a main dish that serves from four to eight people, and must contain at least one egg per serving. There are two categories for entry: juniors, who must be enrolled as a student in grades 7-12; and adults. All entrants must be Georgia residents and have the entry postmarked no later than Sept. 15. First prize in both divisions is $500 $200 for second place and $100 for third prize. Winning recipes in each category will then become Georgia's entries in the national contest, for which the first place prize in each category is $4,000. All entries will be pre-judged. The top five in each division will be kitchen-tested by food professionals and judged equally on nutritional quality, ease of preparation, taste, appearance and creativity. To enter, send the recipe with (Continued on page 12) An entomologist by degree, Dr. J. Wendell Snow finds the diversity of research at the Bryon station he directs to be quite challenging. Byron Fruit and Nut Lab Successful Research Center A common complaint against research is that it lacks tangible, immediate results and benefits. One need look no further than the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fruit and Tree Nut Research Laboratory near Byron, then on to the throngs of nearby peach packing sheds to put aside that notion. "Forty percent of the commercial peach varieties in the Southeast were developed at this station," said Dr. J. Wendell Snow, the affable research scientist who serves as the lab's director. "And what is probably the single most important peach variety in the world came from here, the Springcrest." Spread over more than 1,100 ver- dant acres of rich coastal plain soil in the heart of Georgia's peach belt, the 30-year-old experiment station is dedicated to the improvement of existing varieties of fruit and nuts, and to the development of new varieties. It was in nearby Marshallville where the peach industry began with the advent of the Elberta variety in the last century. And although Georgia has fallen to third in the country in peach production, half the nation's pecans come from (Continued on page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, August 31, 1988 Farm employment Will catch, pen & haul cattle, have horses, dogs, pens and tranq. gun, statewide. A Fishy Tale Fishing is the top sport in Georgia and brings the state approximately $400 million annually, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources 1987 Annual Report. The Fisheries division of DNR manages Georgia fish populations in more than 4,000 miles of trout streams, 12,000 miles of warmwater streams and one-half million acres of impoundments. Approximately 1.5 million people participate in fresh-water sportfishing yearly in Georgia, making it the most popular wildlife recreational activity in the state. Freshwater fisheries are managed and protected by DNR through private and public waters management; public fishing areas; trout production and stocking; warm-water hatchery production; research and surveys; and boat ramp construction and maintenance.
