Pork Checkoff Passage Urged by Producers
> The National 100 Percent Legis lative Checkoff, which took effect on Nov. 1, 1986, has challenged all pork producers to make an invest ment in the pork industry.
As producers, we understand in vestments. We make them -- in equipment, feed and animals. We'll all have an opportunity to vote on whether to continue the Checkoff and the romotion programs it funds in the ,00 percent referendum on Sept 7 ind 8. Pork producers control 100 perent of the Checkoff funds, with

lected producers who have come up hrough the ranks making the deciions on spending these funds. Apiroximately 500 producers serve on loards, committees and as delegates hat make these decisions.
The National Pork Board consists if 14 producers and one importer. Joard members are elected by proiucer delegates and appointed by he U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
The pork board distributes funds ind audits expenditures. Seventy lercent of the money pork prolucers invest in the 100 percent heckoff program is used to promote lork.
Glenn Grimes, an agricultural iconomist at the University of Misouri, reports that the 31-cent-perlead investment in the 100 percent heckoff helped return $8 or more n additional profits per hog to iroducers last year.
This occurred due to an increased onsumer demand resulting from he highly successful advertising ampaign, "Pork -- The Other Vhite Meat."
Market research shows that the vhite meat campaign has increased iwareness of the product by 163 >ercent, which has translated into ncreased sales of pork.

Attention Equine Owners
The Market Bulletin has had sev eral queries recently regarding the health requirements for the trans portation of equine.
According to the Georgia Depart ment of Agriculture's equine divi sion, the only requirement for in state travel is a current negative coggins test, valid within the past 12rMnoonstt.hss_lates imcmamg ucoigic./ require a current negative coggins test and a health certificate for equine transported interstate, how ever.
The Georgia Department of Agri culture recommends that all equine owners check with their local veter inarian for the requirements of the state of destination, since some states require a negative coggins test within six months.
Sen. Fowler Joins Irvin On State Agriculture Tour
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was joined by U.S. Senator Wyche Fowler on a tour of agriculture production in South Georgia last week.
The tour began in Douglas, with brief stops in Valdosta and Moultrie, and included visits to the ongo ing tobacco sales in those areas.
"I am delighted that Senator Fowler was able to take time from his hectic schedule to accompany me on this tour," Irvin said. "This gives him a firsthand look at one of the state's major farm production areas and a chance to talk with South Georgia producers about their particular needs and con cerns."
Fowler is a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutri tion and Forestry.
"The Senator played a vital role in drafting the drought bill signed into law by the President," Irvin said. "We are most fortunate to have him serve on the Agriculture Committee to address the specific needs of our farmers."

Food Plans
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Human Nutri tion Information Service cornpures me LU&I ui ruuu t home for four food plans: thrifty; low-cost; moderatecost; and liberal.
The plan consists of foods that provide well-balanced meals and snacks for a week. In computing the costs, the USDA assumed all food is bought at the store and prepared at home.
The costs are guides to spending, though families may spend more or less de pending on such factors as where they buy their food, how carefully they plan and buy and whether some food is produced at home.
Costs do not include alco holic beverages, pet food, soap, cigarettes, paper goods and other nonfood items bought at the store.
Details of the four family food plans are available from: Nutrition Education Division; Human Nutrition Information Service; USDA Federal Building; Hyattsville, Md., 20782.
Hot Soup Tips
Hot soup is a popular ad dition to salad bar, deli or restaurant menus, but is it always kept at a hot, safe temperature?
Most soup kettles are electric, so they will keep the soup at a safe hot tem perature (above 140 degrees F). However, to ensure the soup you buy is safe, follow these tips:
Buy from a reputable place in order to make sure the soup was prepared in a safe, sanitary environment; look for steam when you pour the soup; and take note that the container in which the soup was poured should become hot to your touch.
If you have questions regarding this category, call Kathy Lowdermilk 6519082.

Grandpa's Garden
If you've ever wondered what to do with the remains after cleaning a mess of fish, you can take a lesson from the Indians, who supposedly planted a fat perch in each hill of maize. Bury fish heads and entrails 6-inches or deeper in your garden and pack it down. If you have stubborn, nosy dogs in the area, put a couple of bricks or a concrete block on top of the covered hole. It'll keep them from digging up the fish.
There's still a big problem with deer that come up and gobble peo ple's gardens. Mr. Ross Holloway of Thomson offers this suggestion: Drive stakes into the ground around the perimeter of your gar den and string them with the kind of twine used for trot lines, about 3 feet off the ground. He says the deer will not cross this barrier. (For those of you who don't know what a trot line is, it is a heavy line strung across a river or pond with hooks dangling every few feet into the water. They are baited and catch large fish.)
If you have too many zucchini and have eaten about all the baked, stuffed, fried, sauteed, julienned and raw squash you can stand for one season, use them in your favor ite pickle recipe instead of, and mixed with, c,ucsuamy bietrsm. Takheosse gwoohdo pickles and even better relish.
When planting your fall garden, and you've got your hands full of tools and implements, you can save time and frustration by using your hoe or spading fork handle as a measuring stick. Simply put electri cal tape around the handle every 6inches for a handy guide.

Pork Checkoff
(Continued from page 1)
Council introduced America's Cut this year. In its first year, 100 percent checkoff funding put this exciting cut of pork in more than 25,000 U.S. grocery stores and 3,000 restaurants.
The 100 percent checkoff is work ing for you and me. Please take the time to vote on Sept. 7 or 8. Encour age your family and friends to do the same. Our future depends on passing this referendum. Without the checkoff, we won't have effec tive promotion. Without promotion, we just might not survive.

Q: I would like to substitute honey for sugar in a cake recipe. How much honey should I use for one cup of sugar?
A: When baking cakes, honey can replace up to one-half the sugar without changing the amounts of other ingredients. Remember that some honeys are sweeter than others and some have a stronger flavor. Generally, the lightest colored ones are the mildest. Honey contains more moisture than sugar, so cakes will remain moist when stored. Combine honey with either the shortening or liquids in the recipe and mix all ingredients thoroughly to prevent the top from becoming soggy. If you prefer cooking with honey instead of sugar, it is best to use rec.ines that mil for it Tt mio-ht HP worthwhile to invest in a honey cookbook.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for saving gasoline? I have an older car and want to improve its fuel economy until I can afford to buy a new one.
A: Proper maintenance of your car will help you get the most miles per gallon. Have it tuned up frequently. A change of spark plugs can make a noticeable difference, both in performance and the gas gauge. Keep the car's front end properly aligned, since wheels drag more when out of alignment, increasing fuel usage. Use a premium 10W-40 oil instead of a single-weight oil. Studies have shown that radial tires can improve gas mileage when compared to bias-ply tires. Next, look at your driving habits. Avoid jack-rabbit starts whenever possible and keep your speed as steady as you can over long distance. Maintain a speed of 50 mph on the open road as a fuel conservation measure. Running the air conditioner, especially in stop-and-go traffic, can reduce fuel savings also.

Random Weight Change Allowed on Packages
Makin' Do
Effective Aug. 29, the U.S. De partment of Agriculture will allow the weight of random weight meat and poultry packages, such as chicken parts, ground beef or sliced deli meats, to be stated in three or more decimal places.
Current regulations allow only two decimal places on the weight statement. Thus, packages weigh ing 1.234 pounds, will no longer have to be rounded off to 1.23 pounds.
Uniform-weight packages, such as hot dogs or canned beef stew, are not affected by the rule. The change was requested by the National Con ference on Weights and Measures. For more information, call 202-4479113 or 202-447-4026.

Drought
(Continued from page 1)
--Producers who bought crop in surance can keep their insurance payments and receive disaster pay ments as long as the total does not exceed their usual income from crops.
--The current dairy support price of $10.60 per hundred-weight will be increased 50 cents for three months beginning April of 1989. The anticipated Jan. 1, 1989 price support cut was cancelled.
--Farmers with disaster losses in 1988 will be eligible to apply for FmHA emergency loans even if they had not previously purchased federal crop insurance. FmHA loan guarantees can be extended to help producers who borrowed from the Farm Credit System or other com mercial lenders and cannot repay all or part of their 1988 operating loans, or regularly scheduled 1988 or 1989 installments on other loans, such as those for farm equipment.
--The USDA can provide assist ance, up to $25,000 per person, for losses to tree seedlings that produce an annual crop or are grown for commercial harvest. At its discre tion, USDA will repay 65 percent of the costs of replanting or provide an equivalent amount of seedlings. Benefits are limited to tree farmers and commercial growers owning 1,000 acres or less which were planted within the last two years.
--Farmers who had Conservation Reserve Acreage rental payments withheld because they hayed their CRP land during the drought can get 25 percent of their payments refunded if they share half the cost of implementing conservation and wildlife enhancement practices on the land.
--The Department of the Interior is authorized to sell farmers and other water users available supplies of water to help alleviate drought damage. The department also can provide emergency loans to help pay for water assistance, such as increased pumping costs resulting from drought.
--The USDA will establish a new program to guarantee loans to rural businesses and organizations suffer ing from losses incurred by the drought, with no individual receiv ing more than $500,000.
In 1989, farmers will be allowed to plant soybeans and sunflowers on at least 10 percent, but not more than 25 percent, of their wheat, feed grain, upland cotton or rice pro gram acreage without affecting their bases. Percentages will be determined by USDA.
--The USDA will be permitted to sell Commodity Credit Corporation corn stocks at reduced prices to ethanol producers who utilize no more than 30 million bushels of corn per year. A maximum of 12 million bushels per month will be sold for this purpose.
--Up to $5 million will be used to fund farmworker programs for mi grant and seasonal farmworkers.
Farmers who have questions about the new programs, should contact their local Agricultural Sta bilization Conservation Service or FmHA office, whichever is applica ble, in approximately four weeks.
