FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvm, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 75, No. 21 Southeast Salutes June Dairy Month "Milk - A Gold Medal Winner" has been selected as the theme for the 1988 celebration of June Dairy Month in Georgia and throughout the Southeast. During this If,:: Olympic year, our |j; thoughts turn to ill the athletes who I dedicate the betfter part of their | young lives train- ing for the mot ment they can s represent Amer- ica in the quest for a gold medal. We marvel at ,their dedication, their quest for perfection,^ and their Our guest columnist this week is Harry Stanley, state manager of the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association; 1777 Phoenix Pkwy., #101; Atlanta, 30349; 404-996-6085. desire to be the best. During June Dairy Month, we should also salute another group of champions possessing these same qualities. Each day, hundreds of dairy farmers in Georgia rise to the challenge of providing us with fresh milk and milk products. For most of them, it is a lifelong calling taking up the torch where their parents left off. There are no crowds to cheer them on as they go about their task. No television reporters will ask how it feels to be a winner. Yet, they continue to perform. Not for the glory, but because it continues to be a rewarding way of life. It is because of their dedication and quest for perfection, that they can provide consumers with nature's most perfect food - milk. The dairy industry has a proud tradition of quality. During an era when shoppers are more educated and concerned about the products they buy for their families, consumers know they can always turn to milk for the vitamins and minerals they need. Because the dairy farm families of our state and country have this commitment to quality, consumers know the milk in their store is the freshest and most nutritious available. During this Olympic year, we (Continued on page 16) Wednesday, June 1,1988 :^^ tM^^Wi^^fe^Mi^li^^; &:&:;i^ Inspect Pines Closely To Protect Tree Health Georgia pine growers, and homeowners with pines on their property, should take care not to confuse two relatively mild diseases in pines - needle cast and fusiform rust - with a fatal Southern pine beetle attack. According to Paige Roberts and Larry Morris of the Georgia Forestry Commission, during spring and summer tree owners should inspect their trees closely, since a Southern pine beetle attack means certain death for an infested pine, yet has characteristics similar to the less serious needle cast and fusiform rust. By distinguishing the diseases from the insect, pine growers can quickly identify a pine beetle attack and save the remaining pines in that area. A close and careful inspection may be necessary however, because the visroie oig^o of tKOCo three pine afflictions are so much alike. The deadly beetle is reddish- brown to black, and is smaller than a grain of rice. It attacks in large numbers by boring through the bark and consuming the inner layer of the tree. When inspecting pines for the Southern pine beetle, look for small, popcorn-shaped resin deposits called pitch tubes scattered around the tree trunk and branches. These resin globules are either pinkish-white or creamy yellow. Another identifying characteristic, is the pin-sized hole which reveals the beetle's path into the tree. Also, a quick and complete change in needle color may signal an attack by the beetle. All of the tree's needles will change from dark green to pale yellow-green in a 1014 day period. After the tree is dead, the needles will again change to a dark reddish-brown. At this time, the beetles vacate the tree and move on to another pine victim. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent a Southern pine beetle attack, or to stop one in progress, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission. The only way to com- bafc tkjo jnpfilifi/. r>Q 0 f io +/-. Tvt-QTrpyif the spreading of the beetle, by immediately removing any infested trees. However, it is important to real- ize that all changes in needle color, and all resin deposits, do not indicate a pine beetle attack. The Forestry Commission recommends looking closely at pines for signs of needle cast or fusiform rust before reporting a Southern pine beetle (Continued on page 16) June Garden Chores Water houseplants more often during summer months. Fertilize strawberries after they finish bearing with an application of 510-10 (1/2 cup per square yard of bed.) Check garden crops daily for disease and insect problems. Cuttings of broadleaf evergreens and deciduous shrubs may be rooted in late June. Divide crowded Boston ferns now, so they will have time to fill out by summer's end.
