FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 75, No. 20 Teach' of a Crop For State Growers Georgia peach growers are expecting nearly a full crop this summer in spite of some weather damage to the crop in the past few weeks, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "At this point, 92 percent of the crop is rated good," Irvin noted. "Because of the large fruit set this year, our peaches were able to withstand below-freezing temperatures and hail earlier this spring without significant losses to the crop," said Irvin. During March, the cold weather caused some bloom loss on early variety trees, and a few growers also reported isolated instances of hail in April and early May. "I think some reports of the damage have been overstated," Commissioner Irvin noted. "Overall, our crop looks good and there are still plenty of quality peaches left to be harvested." Production estimates for this year's crop are around 120 million pounds. Last year, Georgia's peach crop was worth $17.8 million based on a utilized harvest of 98 million pounds. Wednesday, May 25,1988 ag consumer line... Q: I have had trouble finding the type of fertilizer you recommended recently for roses (12-4-8 or 16-4-8). Is there another kind I can buy without having that formula specially mixed. A: This mixture is available in some areas as a lawn fertilizer. But, if you cannot find it, our horticulturist stated that you can use 10-10-10 or can buy a type especially made for roses. Q: I have seen large bees flying around my house. I didn't think much about them, but my neighbor says they are carpenter bees, which can damage the wood if I don't get rid of them. How can I control these pests? A: It is true that carpenter bees can cause damage to wood. They bore tunnels that can be more than 12 inches long and several bees may bore into the same piece of wood. To control these pests, insert 5 percent Sevin dust directly into the holes. Allow the bees to pass through them, so they can come in contact with the dust. In the fall, the holes can be plugged and painted or varnished. ***** Q: Will a hen lay eggs if a rooster is not present? A: Yes, because a hen does not need a rooster in order to lay eggs. A rooster is necessary however, for the hen to lay fertile eggs that will hatch into baby chicks. ***** Q: I would like to complain about a recent rate increase on my group insurance. What office should I contact to file such a complaint? A: You may write: Office of Commissioner of Insurance; 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; West Tower, Suite 704; Atlanta, 30334. Or call toll-free, 1800-282-5808; metro Atlanta call 656-2070. (Continued on page 16) Irvin Voices Support For Boll Weevil Program Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin assured Georgia cotton growers that the program implemented last year to control the boll weevil in Georgia will continue through this season. Trapping, surveying and pesticide applications will continue under the coordinated efforts of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation and the State Department of Agriculture, to suppress any weevil populations which escaped diapause treatments in 1987. Malathion will be the pesticide of choice for the program, with aerial applications made at the height of 5 feet above cotton plants. The chemical will be applied only to that acreage where trapping indicates weevil populations are significant enough to demand treatment. "Our Department will make any necessary changes to ensure the program is carried out this year," Irvin said. "We are committed to seeing that it continues to meet the needs of our cotton farmers. In addition, the program will provide a boost to our state's economy and enhance the quality of our environment." Blueberry Short Course Kicks Off Good Harvest A day-long short course on blueberries will be offered at the Rural Development Center in Tifton, 8:30 a.m. 4 p.m., June 14. The short course is sponsored by Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service and Coastal Plain Experiment Station. Topics scheduled for discussion include: fruit set problems; establishing plantings; control of botrytis; cooling and handling; computer systems for growing blueberries; establishing roadside markets; insect and weed control; and pruning and hedging. A field trip to a nearby blueberry research farm is also planned. Special speakers and blueberry experts will be featured during course activities. The fee for the course is $4. ABAC students may participate free of charge, but are required to register. To register for the blueberry short course, or to receive more information, contact: Continuing Education; ABAC Station, Box 12; Tifton, 31793; ph. 912-386-3267. To register in person, go to room 108 of the Rural Development Center in Tifton. According to Dr. Max Austin, horticulturist with the Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton, and a noted blueberry expert, this year's blueberry harvest should be a good one. "It is looking very good this year. There was some reduction due to a light freeze...but we are estimating around 4 million pounds (of blueberries) marketed in Georgia this year," he noted. Austin said the yield expectations on 1988's blueberry crop is "higher than last year...with everything on-season." On-season means that the bulk of the blueberry crop in south Georgia will be harvested on time, during the second week in June. Depending on what part of (Continued on page 14) Over three million pounds of blueberries were produced in Georgia in 1987 making the state the fifth largest producer in the United States. This pea looked like the traditional blackeyed variety, except the "eyes" were yellow. Major Blueberry Producing Counties APPUNG. WAYNE BACON PIERCE CLINCH. Vlj/VJ Georgia is the nation's fifth larg est blueberry producing state, with more than 3 million pounds of the fruit harvested in 1987. Major blueberry producing counties in Geor gia include Effingham, Appling, Wayne, Bacon, Pierce, Clinch and Lowndes. About 90 percent of the state's blueberry crop is grown in these southeastern counties. Varie ties of the fruit grown in-state range from the ever popular Tifblue, to Climax and Brightwell blueberries. Native to this part of the country, the Rabbiteye blueberries once grew in the wild near large streams and rivers. Now, growing the fruit USDA Proposes Changes In Forest Service Appeal The U.S. Department of Agricul ture has proposed changes in the appeals process of the National For est Service. Changes were proposed after the Forest Service reviewed the current regulation and deter mined it needed to streamline and simplify the rules to eliminate con fusion and expedite the appeals process. The proposal separates appeals concerning use of occupation of the National Forest System lands from appeals involving objections to land and resource management planning and project implementation deci sions. Currently, the same process, which allows a review of a forest officer's decision at two higher lev els of authority, is used for both types of appeals. Under the proposal, both types would be given a streamlined, onelevel review at the next administra tive level, with discretions for fur ther review at one more level. Ap peals involving special use permits would retain more features of the current rule, but contractual dis putes would not be subject to either rule. The proposal was published in the May 16 Federal Register. Com ments on the proposal should be sent to: F. Dale Robertson, Chief (1570); Forest Service; USDA; P.O. Box 96090; Washington, D.C., 20090-6090. (Continued from page 1) commercially is big business. In 1970, there were approximately 68,000 commercial blueberry bushes growing in Georgia. By 1987, the state had over 2 million bushes in commercial orchards. Only Maine, Michigan, New Jersey and North Carolina grow more blueberries. Creating a blueberry breeding program is a time-consuming and painstaking process. According to Austin, developing new varieties from pollination to cultivar release requires a total of about 20 years. Experimentation over the years at the Coastal Plains Experiment Sta tion has led to plants from Georgia nurseries being grown in Japan, South Africa, France, Spain and other countries around the world. Austin explained that blueberry varieties developed here generally have a wider adaptability, both in the Southeast and internationally, than other varieties developed else where. When developing new blueberry varieties, productivity, insect resistance, ability to survive with out irrigation, chilling require ments and berries that won't split open easily in the rain are the most desirable. Buds which are slow to open in the spring and ripen early are desirable also. Growing blueberries commer cially can be just as time-consuming and expensive as creating new vari eties and breeding programs, ac cording to Austin. Several varieties must be chosen and planted to gether so that cross-pollination and maximum fruit set may occur. Also, the grower should take into consid eration the type of operation he or she might want to undertake -- ranging from pick-your-own, to com mercial picking and packaging of the fruit. Young blueberry plants usually are set 6 feet apart in rows 12 feet apart, or about 600 plants per acre. The plants require three to four years to produce a marketable crop, but may produce 15-35 pounds of berries each season once estab lished. According to Austin, wellmanaged orchards may yield up to 12,000 pounds per acre. The actual life expectancy of a commercial blueberry bush is not yet known, but it appears the plants will last at least 30 years and maybe 50-60 years, with correct orchard operation. Experts warn those considering starting a blueberry orchard, that even though blueberries have great potential for both small landowners and large farm operations, marketing the crop and getting the blueberries sold on time at the peak of flavor is crucial for success and can be a complex and expensive problem. Small Business Marketing Series The DeKalb Extension Service and the Small Business Administra tion are offering a workshop series called "Small Business Marketing: On Your Own," 7-9:30 p.m., June 6, 13 and 20, at the Tucker Recreation Center. Registration is $10. The series will help small busi ness owners direct products and services to the right market. Topics will include: target marketing; focus groups; market surveys; inex pensive promotional ideas; direct mailing; franchising and independ ent business operations; and much more. For more information, or to register, contact: DeKalb Extension Service; 101 Court Square; Decatur, 30030; 404-371-2821. If your children decide to practice their artistic skills on your walls or woodwork with crayons, remove markings with prewash laundry stain remover. Tack a piece of sewing elastic across the inside of your desk or dresser drawer to keep small bottles of ink and nail polish upright. For easy-to-make soapballs, try this recipe, submitted by Jeannie Massey of Hoschton. Simply mix two cups of Ivory soap flakes with 1/4-cup of water. If food coloring or perfume is desired, mix in with a wooden spoon. If the mixture is sticky, add more soap flakes. Form balls, let dry, and store in an airtight container. Ms. Massey noted that the soap balls will float. Before browning meat, sprinkle salt in the pan to keep meat from sticking and to help make clean-up easier. Remove stains from china and glassware by soaking in a vinegar and eggshell solution. When your oven is too hot or full to heat dinner rolls, wrap them in foil and heat on a low setting in your crock pot. Cream whipped ahead of time will not separate if you add a touch of dissolved unflavored gelatin (1/4 teaspoon per cup of cream.) To keep pie-crust from becoming soggy, before filling the shell, prebake at 425 degrees for 5 minutes; or brush with beaten egg white before baking. When a recipe calls for honey, molasses or other gooey ingredients, measure cooking oil in the cup first, then measure the sticky ingredients. If supermarket pricing ink stains your countertops, try removing it with hairspray. Use vinegar to clean brick tiling around the fireplace. Dip a vegetable brush in white vinegar, scrub and immediately sponge to absorb moisture. Clean wooden cabinets or paneling with a solution of one cup of any type of time-saving floorwax mixed with one gallon of water. Wash with a soft cloth. This solution also helps protect wood against fingerprints. These stocks are equivalent to 18 percent of the 1987 hay production. In 1986, stocks represented 15 percent of the previous crop. Handicraft Edition The next handicraft edi tion of the Market Bulletin will be published June 22. Deadline for notices is June 8. An affidavit stating that the handicraft item was made by the individual ad vertiser and not purchased for resale, must be included with the notice. Otherwise, it will not be published. Page 16 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 25,1988 Grandpa's Garden If you are one of those folks who gets around to doing certain things, "once in a blue moon," it is about time to get busy. On May 31, the first blue moon visible in the U.S. since July of 1985, will occur. While the term "blue moon" has been used since the 1500s, do not expect to see a moon of a different color on May 31. "Blue moon" is simply used to describe the second full moon, which occurs during the same calendar month. According to Fernback Science Center, the next time this phenomenon is scheduled to occur is December of 1990. Ex perts there also noted that they are not sure of the origin of the term "blue moon," although it has been used for centuries. If you know about the origin of "blue moon," please share it with the Market Bulletin. To keep deer from invading your garden, try placing trellis fencing, or mesh with large openings, be tween rows and around the perime ter of your crops. Set the fencing on 3-inch high strips of wood so that is is raised off the ground. Deer will be hesitant to step on it for fear of getting their hooves caught. If birds or other critters are at tacking your vegetable and fruit crops, tie a helium-filled, foil bal loon to a pole in the garden. As the balloon blows in the breeze, its bright reflection will scare away many animal and bird pests. You can begin planting caladiums this month. Place tubers 1-2 inches deep and space about 1-inch apart in well-drained soil. Unlike many bulbs, caladiums are not cold tolerant. To be enjoyed the follow ing summer, you must dig them up in the fall and store during winter months. The beautiful flowering clematis is a plant that prefers its head in the sun and feet in the shade. Plant these vines in a sunny location and mulch soil at bases to keep roots cool. Fort Valley Extension 'Made-at-Home' Show The Fort Valley State College Cooperative Extension program will hold its annual "Made-at-Home" Show, 8:30 a.m. -- 2 p.m., June 1, at the FVSC campus. Events sched uled during the show include: mak ing "cents" at home; cake decorat ing; arranging silk and dry flowers; and landscaping with nature plants. Other workshops will include herb gardening, cooking with Geor gia products, refinishing furniture, finishing touches with accessories, pine cone decor and upholstery. Spe cial speakers will be featured. For more information about the show, contact your local Cooperative Ex tension office, or call the FVSC Cooperative Extension program at 912-825-6298. Highlighting this year's short course are talks by Dr. Roy Larson, professor of horticulture at North Carolina State University and pres ident of the American Society of Horticultural Science. Other noted speakers include Dave Hartley, director of research at Paul Ecke Poinsettias, Encinitas, Calif., and Alan Michael, corporate production manager, Olgevee Asso ciates, Connellsville, Penn. Farmers throughout Georgia and the U.S. will be contacted during late May and early June for infor mation on their crop and livestock operations. That information will become the basis for developing state and national estimates of the 1988 crop acreages and mid-year livestock number, acceding to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Individual reports are kept strictly confidential and used only in formulating statewide and na tionwide estimates. Representatives from GASS will interview cross sec tions of farmers, by mail, phone and in-person, to collect the needed in formation. National and state crop estimates will be published by the U.S. De partment of Agricultural Statistics Board on July 12, and re-issued in the "Georgia Farm Report." Esti mates of hog inventories will be released on June 30. Larry Snipes, GASS state statis tician, noted that economic condi tions on farms across the U.S. are weighing heavily on farmers' plans this year. Current uncertainties un derscore the need for reliable acreage and livestock information on which to base future decisions. Farmers' cooperation on the survey is the key to developing accurate estimates. ag consumer line... (Continued from page 1) Q: I plan to purchase a side of beef from a meat company and store it in my freezer. Is it safe to have the meat cut into several large sections, or should I have it cut into steaks, roasts, ground beef, etc. before freezing? A: Large sections of beef can be frozen successfully at home, but precautions should be observed so that the meat is frozen quickly and completely to preserve quality and prevent bacterial growth. If you buy a whole carcass, or have it cut into a few large sections, it should be quickfrozen by a commercial facility before placing it in your freezer. A home freezer cannot freeze a large piece of meat fast enough to prevent bacterial growth. Do not age beef as long if you plan to freeze it because aging continues at a slow rate even after the meat is frozen. Chill individual cuts thoroughly for 24 hours at 33-36 degrees-F. before freezing. Place packages in contact with refrigerated surfaces so they will freeze faster and leave a little space between them so air can circulate freely. After they are frozen, they can be placed close together and more meat can be added from the refrigerator. Keep a freezer thermometer inside the freezer and check it frequently. Wrap meat in moisture/vaporproof wrap before freezing. Ground beef and stew meat will keep approxi mately three to four months. Steaks and roasts will keep approximately six to nine months. ***** For answers to problems, or questions, concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services; Room 227, Agriculture Building; Capitol Square; Atlanta, Georgia, 30334; or call toll-free, 1-800-282-5852; or 656-3645 in metro-Atlanta. Wtolw Although jicama has been grown in South America and Mexico for centuries, Americans have become familiar with this root crop only in recent years. Also known as yam bean and Mexican water chestnut, jicama was initially introduced to the Philippines in the 17th century by the Spaniards, who named it jicama, the Spanish words for "edible storage root." From a distance, the jicama plant resembles the pesty poison ivy plant with trailing vines and clusters of three leaves. While it produces prolific greenery, the underground tuber is the only edible portion of the plant. Like many other vegetables, the roots, leaves and flowers are poisonous. Jicama tubers resemble turnip roots, which have been slightly flattened from end to end. The root's dusty brown skin is tougher than a potato's but still easy to peel. The root crop can be started by seed sown directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Prepare the soil just as you would for carrots or other root crops. Work in compost or well-aged manure, along with potash, to help root development. Since jicama is a climbing plant, the seed should be planted near a fence or other means of support. Space plants at least 6-8 inches apart and keep vines pinched back to the height of the support provided. You can start harvesting your jicama crop as soon as the tubers reach edible size. Harvest as needed and complete digging before the first frost, since the vines die back as the weather cools. Jicama is said to taste like a cross between apples and water chestnuts. Considered a salad vegetable, it is best enjoyed raw, but is excellent in stir fry dishes, since it remains crunchy after cooking. Unlike similar vegetables, the jicama's whitish inner meat does not discolor when exposed to air. See pages 13 & 15 for Handicrafts Ads
