I am thinking about carrying gasoline in the trunk of my car because I ran out of gas a few days ago and had to walk a couple of miles to the nearest station. The gas will be kept in an approved container. Is this safe? No, it is not. Carrying gasoline in the trunk of the car is danger- ous, whether it is in an approved or unapproved container. If you are hit from the rear, the fuel may explode. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commis- sion (C.P.S.C.), many times when this happens, the results are fatal. For those who survive, the recov- ery from severe burns is long and painful and the scars are perma- nent. C.P.S.C. also reports that gasoline is the most commonly used and misused flammable liq- uid. It is involved in more than two-thirds of all flammable liquid accidents. ***** For answers to questions or solutions to problems concerning products and services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 227, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334, or call tollfree 1-800-282-5852, or 656-3645 in metro Atlanta. Wednesday, January 6, 1988 Poultry industry representatives, farmers and visitors enjoy the 1987 International Poultry Trade Show. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the show, which is sponsored by the Southeastern Poultry & Egg Association. Six Georgians have served as president of the Association in its 40-year history. The Association has members from several states, and makes its headquarters in Decatur. International Poultry Gathering Highlights Industry Advancements Georgia will host the "world's largest poultry event," the 40th International Poultry Trade Show and Southeastern Poultry & Egg Association gathering, Jan. 20-22 at the World Congress Center in Atlanta. A variety of poultry industry organizations participate in the international event, which features many exhibits, educational activities and special speakers. The show's theme this year is "Accelerating the Positive Image." Organizers are estimating the "largest crowd of poultry people ever to attend a poultry event in the United States, if not the world." Last year's gathering drew almost 20,000 people from the U.S. and abroad, with 1988 attendance expected to increase. More than 750 exhibitors will be on hand to display the latest in technology and equipment associated with the poultry industry. In addition, an impressive roster of speakers is scheduled including: Georgia Secretary of State, Max Cleland; Ted Turner, president of Turner Enterprises; Arkansas (U.S.) Senator David Pryor; humorist and motivational speaker, Jeanne Robertson; and keynote speaker, political columnist and commentator, James J. Kilpatrick. Exhibits will be open 9 a.m. 5 p.m. during the three-day engagement, except on Friday, when they close at 4 p.m. Educational programs for all segments of the industry will be held Thursday and Friday, concurrent with exhibit showings. "There are many reasons why all segments of the poultry industry place special emphasis on the event," said Robert Comerford, president of the Southeastern Poultry & Egg Association. "Not only is the industry expanding in most countries of the world, there are dynamic changes taking place in growing, processing, and marketing that make it imperative to attend just to keep up." Comerford added, "By attending the show, poultry people will get a better feel for the direction the industry is going in areas of further processing, packaging and added values. The industry today is seeing more new developments than have occurred in the last half century." The College Youth Program will celebrate its 20th anniversary during the poultry event. Seniors and graduate students majoring in poultry, animal science, avian medicine, (Continued on page 8) Peanut Producers Vote On Commission Members The 30-day referendum period to fill two seats on the board of directors of the Georgia Peanut Commission officially began Dec. 30. Nomination meetings were held in midDecember to fill the expiring terms of W.R. Hatcher (District 1) and James M. Blitch (District 3). District 1 nominees are Hamill McNair and Hatcher, who was renominated. Nominees for District 3 are J.C. Wilkes and Blitch, who was also re-nominated. The Georgia Agricultural Commodities Promotion Act states that at least two nominations must be made for each seat on the Commission. Ballots have been mailed to producers in both districts. Ballots must be marked and returned by midnight, Jan. 28. Any producers in Districts 1 and 3 who did not receive a ballot, may get one by writing: Georgia Department of Agriculture, Commodities Promotion, 326 Agriculture Building, Atlanta, 30334, or by calling 404-656-3678. Following the referendum, appointments for the three-year terms will be made by ex-officio members of the Commission. Ex-officio members are: Tommy Irvin, Commissioner of Agriculture; Robert Nash, President of the Georgia Farm Bureau; Marvin Dunson, a farmer from Toccoa; and Terry Gerrald, a farmer from of Statesboro. Farm Front Peanut Poundage Quota The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the national poundage for the 1988 crop of peanuts is 1,402,200 short-tons. This quota is 46,700 tons above the quota that was established for the 1987 crop. As required by law, the national poundage quota for the 1988 crop of peanuts has been established at a level that is equal to the estimated quantity of peanuts that will be devoted to domestic edible seed and related uses in the 1988 marketing year, which begins Aug. 1.
