FARMERS & CONSUMERS , Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 74, No. 50 Botanical Garden Showcases Plants The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, a part of the University of Georgia in Athens, is many diferent things to each of its over 100,000 annual visitors. To many people the 16 year old garden is a delightful guided tour through the tropical plants of the Conservatory or a stroll through the Dunson Native Flora Garden and the Turner Rose Garden. It might also be a fall afternoon walk on one of the more than five miles of trails along the Oconee River and through 293 acres of undisturbed native Georgia Piedmont woods. To many it is a place for programs on vegetable gardening, home landscaping, rose gardening, or class field trip for University of Georgia students preparing for careers in landscape architecture, forestry, botany, or horticulture. Our guest columnist this week is Roy A. Mecklenburg, Director of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, 2450 South Milledge Avenue, Athens 30605. The Botanical Garden is obviously a place to enjoy the beauty of Georgia native plants and gardens, as well as to learn and better understand their culture and significance. Less obvious, but absolutely essential to the operation of the Garden, is the development of plant collections and the study of plants. Botanical gardens have been, and continue to be, leaders in the field of plant collection and the evaluation of plants from all over the world. The nursery industry, one of Georgia's fastest growing agricultural segments, directly benefits from the plant collections and evaluation programs at the garden. The development of new landscape plants from both native Georgia plants and plants from other countries, provides the state's nurseries with new agricultural crops. Over 80 percent of the landscape plant varieties listed in two of Georgia's largest production nurseries are native in China, Japan, and Korea. Many of the most dependable plants in our home landscapes are from Southeast Asia. Our home landscapes, as well as most of our agricultural crops, are truly international in character and origin. New trees, shrubs, evergreens, (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, December 16, 1987 Poinsettia grower William Morrison shows off several of his favorite D-14 Glory poinsettias in his greenhouse. Growing Popular Christmas Plant Challenges Poinsettia Producer Looking over a greenhouse full of lush, beautiful poinsettias, grower William Morrison still isn't satisfied. He believes he could have had a better crop if the heat and sun had been less severe earlier this year. "Poinsettias are probably the most difficult greenhouse crop to grow...they're very sensitive," Morrison said. "I just love the poinsettia, it's symmetry and color...it's a cantankerous crop, but a good crop." Morrison, who has grown poinsettias for 17 years, knows what it takes to produce an attractive, high quality poinsettia that will last throughout the Christmas holidays and well into the new year. Morrison grows the D-14 Glory poinsettia at his plant farm right outside of Atlanta. His greenhouses produce an average of 2,000-5,000 poinsettias for the holidays, but Morrison has grown as many as 17,000 in years past. A Mississippi native, Morrison said he "backed into" plant farming upon his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 25 years. Having grown up on a farm, Morrison said he felt the need to return to the land after his retirement. He purchased a plant farm in 1969 and began growing poinsettias in 1970 after a friend complained that she could not find a suitable one to purchase. Considered a long term crop, poinsettias are difficult to grow correctly and require a good bit of attention and care, according to Morrison. The preparation for this Christmas flower begins in the summer. "We usually take our first cuttings the first of August, so it ends up being about a five month crop. The plant sets its buds in late September, early October," Morrison explained. "We get our stock plants in May. Compared to other plants the poinsettia takes a while to grow...three to six months." According to Morrison, the basic difference in growing a strong, healthy poinsettia and a mediocre plant means taking into consideration the amount of heat the plant is provided. Aside from outdoor crops in some of the warmer climates of Texas, Florida and California, poinsettias must be grown in greenhouses. "You can't grow a good plant without keeping your temperature in the high 60s during October, November and into December," Morrison said. "It can't develop into a decent plant if it's too cold. Counties Qualify For Feed Assistance Eight additional Georgia counties have qualified for federal aid under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Emergency Feed Assistance Program. The approved counties are: Carroll, Catoosa, Coweta, Dade, Jasper, Macon, Morgan and Wheeler. A total of 62 counties were approved for the program earlier this fall. The federal program helps subsidize feed costs for farmers who have lost 40 percent or more of their annual feed production due to severe weather. Farmers in approved counties who believe they may qualify for the program must apply at their county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office by December 31, 1987. ag consumer line... For the past few years, I have worked with a civic organization that collects toys for underprivileged children at Christmastime. While the toys don't have to be new, they do have to be in good condition. We recently received a toy that I remember being involved in a product recall several months ago. However, I don't remember whom to contact for information about it. Can you tell me who to call? If you want to inquire about the safety of a toy (or other product), you may call the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (C.P.S.C) toll-free at 1-800-638CPSC. You may call the Atlanta office at 347-2231 or write to 730 Peachtree Street, NE, Suite 871, Atlanta, Georgia 30365. We are glad to hear that you are concerned enough about safety to check out this product. The person who donated the toy was probably unaware of the recall and, many times, those persons who assist in collecting and restoring toys for these drives are unaware of them, too. -For answers to questions or solutions to problems concerning products and services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 227, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334, or call tollfree 1-800-282-5852, or 656-3645 in metro Atlanta, Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, December 16,1987 Farm employment If you have questions regarding this category, call Kathy Lowdermilk 6563727. Cool and slice very thin for serving. Georgia Peanut Commission Roasted, toasted, baked or boiled, nuts can be a nutritious addition to a variety of dishes. Georgians are fortunate to have two of the most popular recipe additions pecans and peanuts readily available throughout the year at most grocery stores and food markets. In addition to adding just the right texture and flavor to a recipe, nuts provide nutrition as well. Nuts are high in protein and contain B vitamins, riboflavin, niacin and (in smaller amounts) calcium, phosphorous, iron and potassium. They are also a good source of fiber. Pecans and peanuts are available shelled or unshelled, which adds to their diversity in storage and cooking. Unshelled nuts are usually less expensive than shelled nuts. When selecting in-shell nuts, choose those that are clean and free from cracks, stains, molds and holes. Shelled nutmeats should be plump and uniform in size and color. Avoid those which are limp, rubbery, dark or shri- veled. Nuts are perishable because they have a high unsaturated fat content which can become rancid. To delay this, they should be protected from air, moisture and high temperatures. Unshelled nuts keep well for a short period of time at room temperature, or up to six months if stored in a cool, dry place. Frozen nuts with or without the shell will keep for up to two years in airtight containers. When purchasing them to store, be aware that nuts in the shell resist insects, molds and rancidity much longer than shelled nuts. However, shelling before storage reduces the weight of nuts and the space they occupy. Shelled nuts can be more convenient for lastminute holiday cooking as well. When purchasing shelled nuts, remember that whole nuts keep longer than chopped or ground. For a nutty holiday twist, try these recipes featuring Georgia peanuts and pecans. If this is to happen, it is essential that the State Botanical Garden of Georgia continues to actively collect native plants from Georgia, the Southeastern United States, as well as those areas of the world with climates similar to Georgia. These plant collections will become a rich research base for a variety of research projects at The University of Georgia. Attention Advertisers While Wednesday noon is the deadline for notices to appear in the coming week's Market Bulletin, during the holiday season we often must observe earlier press deadlines. Keep this in mind and mail your ads in early so they will appear in the issue you desire. Growing Popular Christmas Plant (Continued from page 1) The poinsettia market is "huge" according to Morrison, but quantity should not be confused with quality. Because there is such a wide range in the quality of the plant, it is difficult to estimate an average price. Most poinsettias cost anywhere from $2 to $15. "There are quality poinsettias around, but you have got to look to find them," Morrison advised. "Once you have your plant though, the most important thing to remember is don't over-wet it. It must have moisture, but not too much." Fernbank Features Narcissus Plants The DeKalb County School System's Fernbank Science Center greenhouse will feature the paperwhite narcissus on December 20. There is no admission fee and a horticulturist is available to answer questions on indoor and outdoor gardening. For more information call 378-4311. Poinsettia Care and Selection Place your plant in an area with sufficient light, but without direct sunlight. Poinsettias need at least six hours of indirect sunlight daily to thrive. Avoid drafts or excess heat. Keep plant moist at all times, but no "soggy feet." Drain off excess water and never allow poinsettias to set in water. To prolong the poinsettia's bright colors, keep temperatures at approximately 72 degrees by day and 65 degrees by night. When selecting a plant, choose one with green foliage all the way down to the soil line. (This is a good indication that the plants have active, healthy roots.) Look for plants that have small green buttons (cyathia) in the center of the colored bracts. These buttons will eventually develop into little yellow flowers. Horticulture Class Begins Next Month The Cobb County Extension Service will sponsor an in-depth horticulture training program during January and February at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, 1345 Piedmont Road N.E. The Commercial Horticulture Institute will offer both advanced and basic training sessions. The first four sessions will be in-depth horticulture training, while the last two sessions will be of interest to retail and ground maintenance operations. The sessions will be conducted 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27, and Feb. 3 and 10. The deadline to register for the program, which is geared to full-time horticulture employees, is Dec. 31. There is a $75 registration fee. For more information, contact Extension horticulture agent Bill Durden at the Cobb County Extension office, 10 East Park Square, Suite 330, Marietta 30060 or call (404) 429-3343.
