FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 73, No. 5 Consumers Value Nutritious Eggs As one of the state's approximately 300 egg producers, I am very pleased that Governor Joe Frank Harris has honored our industry by proclaiming February as |Egg Month in I Georgia. Our industry jprides itself in I delivering to conIsumers a product ithat is of the I highest quality. I When a carton of j eggs is purchased, four industry is actually judged three times: once when the carton is opened and the egg's exterior shell is first visible; again when the egg is cracked open for use; and the third time when the egg is eaten. Our guest columnist this week is Bill Adams, president, Georgia Egg Association, 6 Forest Drive, Statesboro 30458. In order for our eggs to pass all three of these tests, the hens producing those eggs must be monitored at all times. Environmentally controlled houses and the latest vaccines assure her comfort and health. Specially formulated feed and ample water will enable her to lay about 251 eggs per year. Both the exterior quality of the shell and the interior quality of the egg can be affected without this special attention. Freshness is of utmost concern. Once an egg is gathered from the nest, freshness is maintained with constant refrigeration until it arrives at the plant for processing. This includes washing, candling (inspecting each individual egg as it passes over a bright light), grading, weighing and packaging. The completed carton is then returned to refrigeration where it is kept until time for delivery in a refrigerated truck to your local grocery store. With this care, you can be assured that the eggs you buy from the refrigerated dairy case will still be fresh and of the highest quality. You can prolong this freshness by storing your eggs in the refrigerator. They will maintain their nutritional value for four or five weeks when properly stored. (Continued on Page 12) Wednesday, February 4,1987 Tobacco Growers Urged To Attend Annual Meeting The Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation, the grower-owned cooperative which administers the price support program for flue-cured tobacco, has scheduled its 29th annual district meeting for Georgia growers Feb. 9. According to Georgia Director B. Frank Strickland and General Manager Fred G. Bond, the meeting will be held at the Rural Development Center in Tifton beginning at 2 p.m. Major topics to be presented include a complete and detailed report on the cooperative's operations; review of the new tobacco legislation; and methods of marketing fluecured tobacco in other areas of the world. Growers also will have the opportunity to ask questions about the corporation's operations as well as the changes in the overall tobacco program. In addition, reports will be presented by allied organizations and agencies with time provided for discussion. Following the program there will be a brief business meeting to select Advisory Committee members from each of the flue-cured tobacco producing counties in the district. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin urged flue- February has been proclaimed "Egg Month in Georgia" to salute the state's egg producers and to recognize the egg industry's importance to Georgia's economy. Commercial layers, like those pictured above, each produce an average of 251 eggs per year. The state produces more than three billion table eggs annually, valued at almost $123 million. cured tobacco growers to attend the meeting in order to get a better understanding of the cooperative's operations and the future outlook of the tobacco program. Ga.'s Mineral Industry Remains Valuable Natural Treasure Although agriculture is considered Georgia's largest industry, the mining business contributes significantly to the state's economy. In fact, Georgia ranks seventh nationally in non-fuel mineral production with a value of $969 million in 1985. Two-thirds of this production was attributed to clays, primarily kaolin. This mineral was first mined in colonial times and shipped to England for use in fine china and pottery. Today kaolin is used in a number of industrial products, such as paints, rubber and plastics. But its' primary use is in papermaking, another important industry in Georgia. The mineral is utilized as a filler in paper to improve printing quality. Georgia currently is number one in the world in the production of kaolin and contributes more than 80 percent of the country's output. The state also supplies 90 percent of the nation's kaolin exports. The fall line, between Macon and Augusta, contains the largest known reserves of high-grade kaolin in the world. Stone production also contributes significantly to Georgia's mineral industry, providing a value of nearly $248 million in 1985. According to Eddie Williams, geologist with the Department of Natural Resources Geologic Survey Branch, stone is classified two ways, as dimension stone and as crushed stone. "The quality of the stone and method of mining determines its use," noted Williams. The geologist explained that dimension stone is cut from exposed rock formations in large blocks, each weighing several tons. When surface stone is not suitable for cutting or is located underground, it is mined as crushed stone. This substance is produced by first blasting the stone and then hauling it to a large crusher. (Continued on Page 12) Sign-up Date Scheduled For Conservation Program The first 1987 Conservation Reserve sign-up period will begin February 9 and extend three weeks, the Georgia Forestry Commission announced recently. The federally-funded program was inaugurated last year to encourage landowners to plant trees or grasses on highly erodible and gulley-damaged croplands. Plantings are established on a 50 percent cost-share basis with the government paying the landowner annual rent on the land for ten years. The rent payment is based on an amount submitted by the landowner and accepted by the government. In the initial three sign-ups, approximately 150,000 acres in Georgia were approved for the program. Georgia led the nation in the number of acres committed to the tree planting phase of the program. According to Forestry Commission Director John Mixon, the government accepted bids up to $45 per acre in annual rent during the last sign-up period. He also pointed out that at the end of the ten-year cycle, the landowner retains a rapidly growing forest which will produce products valuable to both landowner and the state's economy. Adams Route S, Box 181 Vidalia, Georgia 30474 Dear Editor: "Friends of the Park" is an organization of volun- teers who, through an agreement with the City of Atlanta, replant and restore the city's parks. Last year's drought was hard on the Old Constitution Spring area of Grant Park, so we are inviting all interested gardeners to join us at noon, Feb. 21, to replant this area.
