FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 74, No. 46 Farm and City Work Together Georgia currently is experiencing a high rate of growth along with a depressed agricultural economy. Anticipated growth will place a strain on rural/urban relationships. Already there is a widening social and psychological distance separating farms and cities. However, this trend does not have to continue. Farm-City Week involves a series of events aimed at bringing about a better understanding between rural and urban people and to increase the knowledge and appreciation of each for the American way of life. This year, Farm-City Week is observed November 20-26. Each year, the celebration ends on Thanksgiving, a truly appropriate time to join together and close the gap between the rural and urban segments of the population. ag consumer line... My red tips and roses suffered from leaf spots last summer. Is there anything I can do now to prevent this from happening next year? Fall is a good time of year to tidy up your garden and help reduce the incidence of disease on your ornamentals next year. Many diseases overwinter on decaying plant debris. In the spring when temperatures rise and there is adequate moisture, the tiny seed-like spores of fungi germinate and are )lown or splashed on plants to renfect them. To prevent your plants from be:oming re-infected, remove leaf ind stem litter from under your ed tip photinias, roses and any )ther perennial plants that sufered from leaf spots or other diseases last summer. Dispose of this lebris in your garbage and replace he leaf litter with a clean mulch if pine straw, wood chips or corntost. Never put diseased plants or my parts of them in the compost die. Since pecans should be planted while they are dormant, homeowners can soon begin establishing trees in their yards. While there are many pecan varieties, only a few are recommended for "backyard" production. Because most homeowners cannot spray trees to control destructive diseases, resistant varieties should be selected. The following are recommended for Georgia: Stuart, Elliott, Parley and Curtis. At least two varieties should be planted to assure good pollination. This is particularly important in areas where few pecan trees are located. While most of Georgia offers an ideal climate for growing pecans, the trees do best in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont areas of the state. The popular nuts are not recommended for the North Georgia mountain region. Pecan trees should be established during the dormant period in December or January. When selecting a planting site, keep in mind that big trees from little seedlings grow. Special Handicrafts Edition (SecPages 14-15) T*T7! ? % 7T T*T >T% >T% >T*T T*% 17*% >7*T >??%?! Plant well away from buildings and power lines and space trees at least 60 feet apart so they will not be crowded when they reach maturity. Drying out before planting and failure to supply adequate moisture for the first two years are the major causes for the early death and slow growth of pecans, according to Extension specialists. For this reason, trees should be planted the day they are received from the nursery. If the trees are dried out soak them in water for several hours to freshen. Because of the long taproots, a deep planting hole is required. Dig a hole deep enough to plant the tree the same depth as it grew in the nursery. It is not uncommon for the planting hole to be at least three feet deep and from 12 to 24 inches wide. Incorporate peat or well-rotted compost with soil before refilling the hole. Prevent settling by firming down soil layers as you fill the hole to the surface. Do not place fertilizer in the planting hole. One-half of the top of new trees should be removed to balance the top with the root system. This is essential for good survival. Apply a six inch layer of mulch (straw, leaves, old sawdust, etc.) to help conserve moisture and hold down weeds. Providing adequate moisture during the first one to two years is critical for proper growth and survival. When rainfall (Continued on page 16) Ga. Counties Qualify For Feed Assistance Eighteen additional Georgia counties have qualified for federal help under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Emergency Feed Assistance Program. The approved counties are Bleckley, Cherokee, Clayton, Crawford, Dickens, Dooly, Early, Elbert. Fayette, Floyd, Hart, Franklin, Lamar, McDuffie, Peach, Pike, Stephens and Spalding. Requests for additional counties have also been submitted for approval. A total of 17 counties were approved by the USDA last week. In order to qualify, a county must have at least a 40 percent loss of livestock feed crops, including pasture. Once a county has been designated, farmers who believe they have lost 40 percent or more of their annual feed production may apply immediately to the county Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) for compensation for purchases of livestock feed. If approved, assistance is retroactive from the time of application. Deadline for applications is December 31,1987. .. : with- j^rm&niici;*vegetative;' ; :S:; 't^rJfif '"fo3;': .IjSttk ""figures,'. inued on pa;gWl6;Mw. : Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, November 18,1987 If you have questions regarding this category, call Kathy Lowdermilk 6563727. ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions. In addition, all horse farmers must have had animals in their possession 60 days or more before offering them for sale through this publication. Special thanks to Ken Bailey and the folks at the Georgia Forestry Commission for preparing the annual Cut Your Own Christmas Tree List for the Market Bulletin. t(Christmas Trees for Sale I remember well that day five years ago when you first brought hundreds of them from town. Sometimes I would watch when you didn't know as tenderly you pushed and poked the dirt around tiny, baby seedlings in the nicest, neatest rows You didn't get a wink's good sleep 'til they were in the ground For five years you've dibbled, pruned and plowed, coming in with callouses that even kisses couldn't heal You've worked longer than the Lord or I should have allowed, your back aching more than your words revealed Silently you've sat at supper, but always with a smile somehow. I've watched the tired overtake you and seen you sleep so still. Honey, I know you thought your work was through, But once I clear the table, there's one more thing we need to do. Here, now you hold the sign I made for you, and I'll hit the nail It's sure been a long, good time coming, "Christmas Trees for Sale." I hope your readers can help me find information that will lead me to the original owner of a "Friendship Quilt," I bought several years ago. The quilt which is in good condition, originally had 20 squares, but has been cut back to 16. The names of families or church groups are hand embroidered on each square and it is dated 1940. I think the quilt was done by a church group at the Riverside Baptist Church whose pastor was S.R. Helton. I have had no luck with the Baptist church associations or other means in locating this church or pastor. If any of your readers have information which might help, please contact me.
